Drawing the Mountains with Jack Spowart | The North Face Car Park

Feb 17, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Fort William
Arts
Join Scottish Highlands based mountain artist Jack Spowart on a morning hike to learn the fundamentals of landscape drawing. During the workshop, Jack will share his approach to creating artwork, the tools he uses, and how to identify a strong composition. He will also explain how he turned his passion for drawing into a successful career as a freelance illustrator and artist. Once we reach the drawing location, you will learn how to select compelling compositions in the environment and quickly create thumbnail sketches. Jack will guide you in building detail using pencil and confidently transitioning to fine-line pen work. You will explore various mark-making techniques, including stippling, bordering, cross-hatching, and line work, to add depth, detail, and interest to your drawings. Although we won't be able to complete a full drawing due to the winter temperatures, Jack will hold a competition after the workshop. Participants will have the opportunity to win a signed and framed print from Jack's collection. All you have to do is finish your drawing using the knowledge gained during the workshop and submit it to him. Jack will showcase your drawings on his social media platforms, and the winner will be determined by his audience. All necessary materials will be provided, but please dress warmly and wear appropriate footwear for the day's conditions. The workshop will go ahead regardless of the weather, and if necessary, we may spend some time indoors. You will be contacted with further details if this is the case. We will also provide a recommended personal kit list and joining instructions closer to the event date. This Creatives workshop is hosted by the Scottish Mountaineering Press in collaboration with Wild Roots Guiding as part of the Fort William Mountain Festival. Spaces for this workshop are limited to 12 participants. About Jack Spowart: Jack Spowart is an artist and illustrator based in the Scottish Highlands. He left his career as an art teacher to pursue his dream of building a creative business. Adventure, sustainability, and happiness are at the core of his work as he navigates the complexities of the art world. Jack's current artwork is characterized by attention to detail and precision. He seeks out intriguing compositions in nature, aiming for balance and intrigue. Drawing inspiration from his own photographs of various locations, he captures the character of each place through a process that starts with a rough pencil sketch. If the composition comes together, he adds more details in pencil before moving on to inking. His methodical approach involves building depth, shadow, and atmosphere with lines and dots.
