Avalanche Level 1: for Skiers and Split-boarders 3/1 -3/3 is a highly recommended 3-day class that serves as the bedrock standard for safe backcountry travel. Following the American Avalanche Association Guidelines (A3), this program is offered by Avalanche Savvy in Steamboat Springs, a beautiful location in Northwest Colorado. The class will utilize multiple spots in the vicinity of Steamboat Springs, Hayden, Clark, and Craig. Participants will have the option to attend the first day's classroom sessions via ZOOM on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.
Avalanche Level 1 is a comprehensive training course designed to equip individuals with the essential knowledge and skills needed to make informed decisions in avalanche-prone environments. The curriculum covers crucial topics, including avalanche types, snowpack analysis, terrain assessment, route finding, and rescue techniques. By gaining a deep understanding of the factors contributing to avalanches, participants become adept at assessing avalanche risk and making educated choices to minimize exposure.
The Level 1 course offers a balanced learning experience, combining classroom instruction with practical field exercises. In the classroom, participants explore avalanche theory, weather patterns, and decision-making cycles, while also learning to use essential tools such as transceivers, probes, and shovels for effective companion rescue. Field sessions provide opportunities to apply knowledge in real-world scenarios, refining skills like snowpack stability assessments and safe travel techniques.
Upon completion of Avalanche Level 1, participants receive a class completion certificate, a complimentary membership to Friends of CAIC for the rest of the season, and a Friends of CIAC membership card. Additionally, all students will receive a free trial pro-account for Caltopo and an OnX trial included with the class.
