Gracie Gold first made her mark on the senior skating scene in 2013 when she made her senior debut at the U.S. Championships, where she triumphed from a ninth-place finish in the short program to win the silver medal. This victory earned her a coveted spot on the 2013 World Team and solidified her position as one of the top U.S. contenders for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games. Gracie's exceptional skills led her to win gold at the 2014 U.S. Championships in Boston, setting three personal-best scores along the way. Her outstanding performance secured her place on the 2014 Olympic Team, where she and her fellow Team USA members secured the Olympic Bronze medal in the first-ever Team event. In the individual ladies competition, Gracie placed fourth.
In her powerful memoir, "Outofshapeworthlessloser," Gracie Gold fearlessly opens up about her struggle with mental illness, eating disorders, and the voice of self-destruction that haunted her. Behind the cameras, she faced a personal battle that the public was unaware of. In 2017, she sought treatment for an eating disorder and anxiety, which concealed her battle with suicidal ideation. While the world saw Gracie's rise to stardom, her private life was crumbling, with cracks widening within her family, her bulimia worsening, and her becoming a survivor of sexual assault. Through this book, Gracie shares the exclusive and harrowing story of her struggles within the high-pressure world of elite figure skating, including conflicts with her family, coaches, and the authorities within her federation. Her deteriorating mental health took its toll after years of training with demanding coaches and growing up in a household that demanded nothing less than gold.
This event is recommended for ages 16 and up, and free parking is available in the Main Library's attached garage. This event is held in partnership with the Greater Columbus Sports Commission. Don't miss this opportunity to gain insight into the remarkable journey of Gracie Gold.
