Allington once described sculpture as 'looking at real things by making real things. It is making poetry with solid objects'. Fascinated by the survival of classical forms in modern life – replicated across media from tea towels to plastic snowglobes – Allington combined humour with deep cultural reflection. Though celebrated as a sculptor, drawing was at the heart of his practice. Working on old ledger paper, he was interested in the contrast provided by these delicate records of daily life, overwritten by the stark volumes of his enigmatic sculptural forms.
