About the Book
Much has been written to try to understand the ideological characteristics of the current Russian government, as well as what is happening inside the mind of Vladimir Putin. Refusing pundits' clichés that depict the Russian regime as either a cynical kleptocracy or the product of Putin's grand Machiavellian designs, 
Ideology and Meaning-Making under the Putin Regime
 offers a critical genealogy of ideology in Russia today. Marlene Laruelle provides an innovative, multi-method analysis of the Russian regime's ideological production process and the ways it is operationalized in both domestic and foreign policies. 
Ideology and Meaning-Making under the Putin Regime
 reclaims the study of ideology as an unavoidable component of the tools we use to render the world intelligible and represents a significant contribution to the scholarly debate on the interaction between ideas and policy decisions. By placing the current Russian regime into a broader context of different strains of strategic culture, ideological interest groups, and intellectual history, this book gives readers key insights into how the Russo-Ukrainian War became possible and the role ideology played in enabling it.
About the Speakers
Marlene Laruelle
 is Research Professor of International Affairs and Political Science and Director of the Illiberalism Studies Program at the George Washington University's Elliott School of International Affairs. Laruelle works on the rise of populist and illiberal movements in post-Soviet Eurasia, Europe and the US. She is the former Director of the Institute for European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies (IERES) and of the Central Asia Program (CAP).
Maria Snegovaya
 is a Senior Fellow for Russia and Eurasia with the Europe, Russia, and Eurasia Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) and an Adjunct Professor  in Georgetown University's Walsh School of Foreign Service. She studies Russia’s domestic and foreign policy, as well as democratic backsliding in post-communist Europe and the tactics used by Russian actors and proxies who exploit these dynamics in the region. Her analysis has been published in multiple policy and peer-reviewed journals. Her research and commentary have appeared in a number of publications such as the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, The Economist, and Foreign Policy. Throughout her career she has collaborated with multiple U.S. research centers and think tanks such as Center for a New American Security and Center for European Policy Analysis. Snegovaya holds a PhD in political science from Columbia University.

is a Research Analyst in the Russia Studies Program at the Center for Naval Analyses (CNA Corporation) and a Professorial Lecturer in Political Science at George Washington University. His research focuses on the politics of authoritarian rule, elite strategic decision-making, civil-military relations, political-military affairs, and ideological illiberalism in post-Soviet Eurasia, Europe, and elsewhere. His academic research has been published widely, including in Communist and Post-Communist Studies, the Journal of Advanced Military Studies, Political Studies Review, and Problems of Post-Communism, and he has written for policy-oriented publications including as Foreign Affairs, War on the Rocks, the National Interest, and American Affairs. He holds a Ph.D in Political Science from George Washington University (2022).

The Capitol building needs to make an appointment to buy tickets in advance to visit. Arrive on time according to the requirements. There are many people. Be sure to have an advance amount to not affect the itinerary. You can make an appointment for a Chinese tour in advance. Although it is a Chinese tour, it is also a foreigner tour guide who speaks English and uses a translator to translate it into Chinese to play it for us. It is very interesting. The interior of the Capitol is also very good from the perspective of the building itself. You must explain it when you go in and visit.

I heard that the White House has not been open to the public since 9/11. When we went there, we could only watch it from a distance outside the fence, so the White House became a boring landmark. We took a tourist check-in photo to end our visit.

There is a big pine tree on the south side of the White House. I didn&rsquo;t expect it to be a &quot;landmark&quot; as well, the &quot;National Christmas Tree&quot;... Well, it seems that we should choose to visit during Christmas.

The Washington Monument Under the Night Sky

As night falls, the Washington Monument, like a silver sword, pierces the Washington, D.C. night sky. Shedding the daytime hustle and bustle, this pure white obelisk loses some of its solemnity and gains a more tranquil and profound air.

Warm yellow lights slowly spread upwards from the base of the monument, clearly and softly outlining the texture of the granite, gazing at the stars in the clear night sky. The monument stands upright, its solitary height accentuated by the surrounding lawn, like a silent guardian of history.

A gentle evening breeze stirs the shadows of the trees on the lawn, and the light and shadow flow across the monument, adding a touch of dynamism. In the distance, the dome of the Capitol Building and the outline of the Jefferson Memorial are faintly visible, together with the monument, outlining the city&#39;s unique skyline in the night.

Without the throngs of tourists during the day, the monument at this moment is more conducive to quiet contemplation. It has witnessed more than two hundred years of changes in the United States, standing quietly under the night sky, perfectly blending the weight of history with the gentleness of the night, silently telling the story of the long years.

The National Air and Space Museum is located in the District of Columbia. It has two floors above ground and one floor underground. It uses pictures, real objects, and simulators to open to visitors. They are all classic historical relics.

National Mall

The National Mall is a must-check-in place for Washington tourism. One is the Lincoln Memorial and the other is the Washington Monument. There is a pool of water between them and green spaces on both sides. There are monuments such as the Victory Memorial of World War II, the Vietnam War and other monuments, and the Jefferson Memorial. The beautiful cherry blossoms of the annual Washington Cherry Blossom Festival are also in full bloom around this area. We arrived in Washington at the end of April. It is a pity that the cherry blossoms have been lost and have not left a trace. I can only imagine that the scene of blooming must be beautiful.
