Join the Introduction to Pixel Shaders workshop in Hamburg at Qualm (Sternschanze) on February 24th and 25th. This beginner-friendly session will provide a comprehensive overview of computational thinking and creative coding using pixel shaders in GLSL. The workshop aims to demystify shaders and help participants overcome any apprehensions they may have about exploring this complex computer program.
Over the course of two half-days, attendees will learn the fundamentals of pixel shaders in GLSL and how they function. They will also be introduced to two different environments for creating shader motion sketches, whether for web-based usage or live coding with audio reactivity. The workshop is designed to incorporate computational mindsets and tools into the artistic practice of creative practitioners, offering a gateway into the world of creative coding.
Participants will explore the RGB color model and gradients, create artwork inspired by abstract and geometric art through code and mathematics, and gain a visual understanding of how trigonometry equations and other mathematical functions contribute to drawing and adding motion to sketches. They will also have the opportunity to experiment with shaders in web-based tools and discover the variations in GLSL syntax depending on the environment used. Additionally, the workshop will explore how music or sound can be used to add audio reactivity to visual art.
No prior knowledge of coding principles or mathematics is required to attend the workshop, making it accessible to beginners. Participants should bring their own Windows, Mac, or Linux machine with an updated version of the Chrome browser. Doors will open at 10:30 AM on both days, with sessions starting at 11:00 AM and ending at approximately 4:00 PM.
The workshop will be led by ilithya, a multidisciplinary artist with a background in creative development and design. Based in Hamburg, Germany, she creates artworks with code and algorithms, often using shaders in OpenGL Shading Language as her preferred medium. Her work has been featured and exhibited internationally.
