My wife and I traveled all the way from the UK to Sandakan for a family visit at Taman Sentosa during the CNY 2026 festive period. Sabah Hotel proved to be the perfect base for our stay; its location made it very convenient to visit relatives while still providing a relaxing, quiet retreat at the end of the day. The hotel’s colonial charm and lush, green surroundings are beautiful. We were particularly impressed by the excellent facilities, especially the large swimming pool and the variety offered at the breakfast buffet. Despite the busy holiday season, the service was top-notch and the staff were incredibly welcoming, which made our festive stay even more special. Our room was clean and comfortable, offering the perfect place to rest after busy days of celebrations. We would highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Sandakan, especially for those coming from abroad to visit family nearby!

Overall, I had a pleasant stay at Livinston Hotel. Pros: The shower water temperature was very stable, which was a big plus. Unlike some hotels where the water suddenly becomes too hot or too cold, the temperature here remained consistent throughout the shower. The room air-conditioning worked very well and was cold enough to keep the room comfortable, even during warmer periods. Cons: The sink tap showed some signs of rust and could use better maintenance. The sink drainage was quite slow, causing water to take longer to drain away. The room lighting was rather dim, making the room feel a bit dark, especially at night.

stayed here for two nights. get seperate bookings. cleanliness is on top. location, i would say easy access to highway. that means its easier to get to newrby attractions like crocodile farm and whatnots. got restaurant just in front of the hotel. 99 mart nearby and so many other shops. the first room doesn’t include hairdryer so its a bit of a hassle. other than that, everything js on top. philips iron steam that works really well, well-stocked stash. my booking came with breakfast. each day, different menu. for me, it is an all-rounder as they serve well-accepted dish. as the space to eat is limited (ground floor space & extended to the first floor but need to climb up stairs), i just found out on my last day that we can actually bring up the food to our room. all in all, mantul 🥰

This hotel is truly unique. The owner probably loves movies, as the lobby is decorated like a cinema, and movie posters adorn the rooms and hallways. The sea view room genuinely offers a sea view. There are various dining options nearby, including Chinese, Western, and Malay food, catering to different budgets. The staff are polite and always smiling. As for visiting Sepilok, it's about a 40-minute taxi ride, costing around 30-something Malaysian Ringgit, so there's no need to spend extra money staying there. Of course, there are downsides; while the rooms are clean, the facilities feel a bit old, especially the bathroom, which really needs a renovation.

Looking from the outside, it's not impressive. That is because the town Sandakan is not particularly a clean looking tidy town. However once inside the hostel, everything is well organized. There are regulations for the guests to follow, doing so keeps the place tidy, clean and comfortable for all staying there. For example, taking iff shoes at demarcation points, yes! If everyone does this, the parts without shoes remains clean from the street dirt. The bed is comfortable, but i found the pillow very hard and a bit high to sleep on. The bathrooms are well supplied and clean with hot water. The air conditioning works well in the bedroom. Inclusive is breakfast, with eggs and toast . The staff are super nice, answering all questions about sights to see, and even helping me set up an APP for taxi rides. One thing I found confusing is the many staircases to different parts if the hostel, but I got familiar with these after a while.

The deco is absolutely stunning. Pretty, can't deny this. Kids were happy to see the hello kitty theme, small size couch for the kids to sit. Downside is the amenities for this accommodation is poorly maintained. Front door can't close, owner ask us to just lock gate don't close front door or door will not able to be open from inside (?!), balcony look dangerous for children, so many sure not to let any kids go there. Lucky just book the place for a night, else will be worry for safely. Pic included where door required to stay open whole day/night to avoid locked in. Lol.

What I liked a lot: Well situated to visit main attractions in Sepilok: Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre/Sunbear centre/Rainforest Discovery Centre (RDC), free shuttle bus to the main attractions (09h-14h-16) which was really great. Also offer tours at reasonable prices e.g. Mangroves & Firefly Cruise (recommended). Free water dispenser. To note: rooms are very basic (there is airco), we had some ants in the room, bathroom is outside. Breakfast was limited and minimal. When we were there internet was not functional, luckily we had taken local simcard before with unlimited data so for us, this was not a big issue. Before coming to the hotel, I had sent a mail to have info about tours they offered, but never received a reply therefore I had booked tours with an agency which in the end was more expensive then when I would have it booked with Paganakan Dii Tropical Retreat. Possible to book tours on the spot (no need to reserve before coming) but I did not know this in advance.

A jewel-like tiny island in the Sulu Sea, a 1.5 hour boat rides north of Sandakan; Lankayan has been declared part of an immense Marine Protected Area to adopt the eco-tourism concept. Unpopulated and covered by thick tropical island vegetation on its topside, this peaceful, untouched little bit of paradise is ringed by an endless pure white sandy beach, offering simply elegant and exquisite accommodation in all 23 wooden, roomy and perfectly appointed seafront chalets. While the ideal destination for those who search for tranquility and relaxation in a virgin natural setting and for families with children, Lankayan Island is also becoming one of the hottest diving destinations on the map today: its dive sites – all just a few minutes away – boasting unbelievably colorful macro, fauna, fascinating wrecks and in season from March to May, regular sightings of gigantic and harmless whale sharks, the “dream date ” of every diver in the world. Situated within the Sea Turtle Corridor, Lankayan Island is also a nesting place and foraging ground for sea turtles; most commonly Green and Hawksbill Turtle. Therefore, guests will have a chance to see turtles nesting as well as new hatchlings of baby turtles released to the sea especially in season from June to September.

My stay at The Garden Boutique Hotel in Sandakan was surprisingly practical and delightful. Although the hotel isn't in the traditional city center and lacks a special view from the window, precisely because it avoids the hustle and bustle, the room rates are quite affordable, yet the room quality was unexpectedly high. Below are the key points of my stay, for travelers planning their Sandakan itinerary: 📍 Location and Transportation While the hotel isn't in a prime downtown location, transportation is actually very convenient. By car, it's within 20 minutes to Sandakan Airport, local famous temples, or other main tourist attractions. For travelers accustomed to ride-hailing apps or driving, this won't affect itinerary flexibility at all. 🛒 Excellent Surrounding Amenities The daily shopping and dining options in this area are surprisingly comprehensive! • There's a local market near the hotel with eateries open from early morning until late at night, making it easy to grab breakfast for an early start or a late-night snack upon return. • The vicinity also has supermarkets, convenience stores, pharmacies, and bakeries, which is very convenient for long stays or for travelers needing temporary supplies. 🛏️ Well-Equipped Rooms, Perfect Details The rooms are the biggest highlight of this hotel! Despite the affordable price, it comes with high-standard hardware: • Ample power outlets, allowing multiple electronic devices to charge simultaneously without issues. • The room includes a wardrobe with hangers, a safe, a mini-fridge, and an iron, catering to both business and long-stay needs. • The TV offers Chinese channels, which is great for entertainment or catching up on shows during downtime. • The bathroom features a wet-dry separation design with a glass partition in the shower area, effectively keeping the space dry and clean, offering a very good user experience. 🧳 More Secure Luggage Storage Service The hotel's luggage storage method left a deep impression. Unlike many hotels that casually place luggage in a lobby corner, here, luggage is securely locked in a dedicated room, and guests are given a claim voucher to retrieve it. This significantly enhances the security of belongings, providing greater peace of mind when out exploring. 💡 Summary and Stay Recommendation ✅ Highly recommended for: travelers who prioritize room quality and complete facilities, are on a budget but seek high value for money, and whose itinerary mainly involves daytime outdoor exploration.

For a small town this consider one of the okay hotel. If you don't need anything fancy and just for sleep, this hotel is sufficient. One complaint though, the fridge have stain cause it keep on and off I guess based on occupancy availability. Afraid of mold and hotel need to be little bit more care to cleanliness. Location wise it is at the main shop areas where you can find lots of food choices as well other grocery pharmacy within walking distances.

This hotel is suitable for an overnight stay if you're catching an early flight after a Kinabatangan River cruise. The room was a bit dark, but everything else was fine. It has a cabin-style vibe with a small garden and a tiny pool. As for breakfast, it's just like a standard budget hotel breakfast, so don't expect too much. The staff were very enthusiastic. The nearby Rainforest Discovery Centre (RDC) is very close and worth a visit, and you can also book a night tour there. As for the Sun Bear Conservation Centre and the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, honestly, only go if you're really bored and have money to spare! Xiaohongshu (a Chinese social media platform) really misleads people; anyone who goes will regret it. Once you've been, you'll truly understand the quality of the zoos back home. The Sun Bear Centre just cages a few bears. The orangutan centre is no different: everyone sits in a glass enclosure watching a group of monkeys (not orangutans!) eat bananas and vegetables on an outdoor platform – basically watching them ”mukbang.” Then you watch a few orangutans ”mukbang” on another open-air platform. We couldn't bear to watch it. After seeing how wild animals live on the Kinabatangan River, these scenes were just unbearable.

When traveling with kids, having a reliable TV is definitely a big plus! 😅 Overall, we had a pleasant stay and would consider returning.

We booked a dorm room with 2 beds and they said that I only booked 1 room, when the booking said 2 adults and I had paid for 2 people so that didn’t get off to the best start. Laundry is absolutely extortionate, charging per item , one of the local home stays did our washing for 5th of the price. Staff said they would have to charge he to use the Phin to call a hospital. Food portions are small and dorms aren’t the cleanest, didn’t have our dorm cleaned or bin emptied once throughout our 3 night stay. Only 1 fan for a room for 6 people so it’s absolutely boiling at night. Pool could do with being cleaned a bit with loads of floating bugs. Setting is nice to be in the jungle but could do with some improvements, maybe starting off with welcoming customer service.

Appreciate if an extra side table or chair can be provided on bed side to place bottle drink, hand phone & spectacle. Extra charge for additional pillow is not welcomed at all. No shampoo or washing liquid (only bath foam provided)! Overall, can not say stay experience is pleasant & enjoyable; only good point is availability of various eateries around.
