Hotel Restaurant Charbonnel

We had the most amazing experience here. We had Christmas lunch overlooking the bridge and river. The food was amazing, delicious local wine to accompany it and fabulous service. The restaurant was full so book early if you want to spend Christmas day there.

Staff delivered in every area, sort plug charges also offered to take us to train station when no taxi was forthcoming, what a brilliant service, can’t recommend this hotel and it’s attentive staff highly enough

My husband, neighbour and I booked dinner for 3 on the balcony on September 1st. My husband and I have dined here at least 5 times before over the past 10-15 years. So when we decided to take our helpful neighbour out to dinner to thank him, we immediately booked Le Carbonnel. We understood there is a new chef with a Michelin star and of course, a new menu. We looked forward to returning here. But what happened at the restaurant was a great embarrassment and disappointment to us. My husband rang ahead asking if the chef could make him a special vegetarian main course and found out we could order two courses each so a dinner would cost about €45 before wine, aperitifs or coffee. When we arrived, the waiter attempted to serve all three of us my husband’s vegetarian choice as a starter. My husband got that mix-up sorted out and then the waiter took all our silverware away leaving only a fork each and two sharp knives for my neighbour and me. We didn’t know why he did that but after waiting about 15 minutes, I called the waiter over to ask why he hadn’t yet taken our order. He said my husband had ordered breast of duck over the phone. But he never did that. We didn’t really want that but we were told we had to have it and that this choice was a ‘surprise’ choice. We then ate it- it was tasty but undercooked but had just some beetroot coulis and a few pieces of the vegetable. So we waited in anticipation to order a lovely dessert. But again, the waiter said we had to have the surprise! It was fairly tasty but not what any of us really wanted. This whole fiasco costs €165. We were all still hungry and upset over this huge change to this wonderful former restaurant. Needless to say, we will not be returning nor recommending it to anyone.

The hotel is beautiful and in an ideal spot in Brantome . We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, everyone is so friendly and always eager to help or assist whenever you need anything. The rooms are very comfortable with lovely French decor and the breakfast was delicious.

My wife and I had a superb stay and meal. The whole 7 course meal was one of the best culinary experiences we have ever had. Stunning food, great drinks and cocktails, amazing location facing the river and a fantastic friendly service. Thank you to all your hard working staff for giving us such a fantastic time. If we could give you more than 5 stars, we would.

The hotel is beautiful and in an ideal spot in beautiful Brantome . We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, the staff is so friendly and always eager to help or assist whenever you need anything 🤗 I do feel that if they had aircon in the rooms it would make the place perfect 😍

The hotel is lovely- excellent position overlooking the river in the centre of town. Our room in the main hotel was charming if slightly old fashioned. There is no air conditioning so it might be oppressive In very hot weather. The staff were delightful. Unfortunately the menu in the restaurant has changed to a tasting menu. The food was of a high standard but it has become much more expensive and there is no choice. It is fine for a special occasion but for lunch time family or friends meals it is too expensive and offers no choice. We have been coming with family and friends since 1997 but unless the menu reverts to its fomer traditional French character we will not be able to afford to come back. It was interesting that on a Saturday evening at peak season the restaurant was less than half full. PLEASE management restore your previous family friendly lunchtime menu!

Booked a three night stay but decided to leave after two nights. We had a family room in the annex which was overlooking the noisy public car park. The room did not have air conditioning so the windows had to be left open ! Despite there being no air con there were no fans in the room ! The family room only had 4 coat hangers and there was no safe in the room which is expected these days ! I think the staff and owners need to try harder and provide a better experience for their clients !!

Hotel Charbonnel is just over the bridge on the center island of Brantome, great location. They do not have parking, there is a pay lot across the street and free parking 5 minutes away. Staff was uniformly pleasant and helpful. There is no elevator, a bellboy carried our bags up to our 3rd floor room. We had a good sized bathroom with a walk in shower, there are shower/shampoo gel dispensers in the shower and next to the sink. We had an aperitif on the outdoor patio, and dinner at the restaurant. The food was wonderful - we had the tasting menu and it was very good. The staff asked if we had any allergies or food restrictions, then the food was a surprise. The first course was a roasted broccoli dish that was a delicious and welcome change after we had eaten so much foie gras in the area. We did 3 courses for 64 euros, there was also 5 courses for 89 and 7 courses for 110. The patio has a retractable awning, sitting on the patio eating dinner next to the water was a lovely experience. Optional breakfast buffet was 15 euros, it included yogurt, pastries, cheese, cold cut meats, good coffee (even decaf!), juices, baguettes with jam. On Sunday evening when we came back from dinner around 10:30PM the hotel was locked up, a code on the back of the room key opens the door to enter. I would recommend this hotel to anyone looking to stay in or near Brantome - great location, great food, nice staff, reasonable prices.
