Overnight stay with friends in this wonderful mature hotel. What a characterful place. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here, lovely place, overly attentive staff. So very sad to hear that they are closing on 1st May for good, what a great, great shame. Would’ve loved to come back.

I've seen a few reviews here which don't do the place justice, one claiming they wanted a luxury break. This isn't a top end luxury hotel, but it is friendly, comfortable and close to the city so that you can take advantage of the attractions and amenities there. It doesn't have a restaurant for evening meals but there is a plethora of restaurants in the city, to suit all tastes. The breakfast menu offers an extremely rich variety of food - for all appetites, and the breakfast staff are good humoured and friendly. Yes, the decor could do with refreshing but otherwise it makes an excellent base for a break in York

We stayed for 2 nights at this characterful hotel. As many reviews have stated this hotel prides it’s self on very customer friendly staff who would ensure our super stay. It is an old building of grandeur and style. Very difficult to keep clean but everywhere was spotless and smelt very fresh. Well done! We had a premium room with lovely big bay window overlooking mature gardens. Our room was very comfortable with a curtained bed and a large en suite, very clean and quality bed linen, fluffy bathroom robes and towels. This hotel offers a real experience of good living, unlike the big chain establishments. The breakfast menu was extensive with dishes for all tastes and were delicious ……and served on very hot plates. Being able to park the car was a blessing. We thoroughly recommend this hotel.

Stayed for 3 nights with my husband. Had enjoyable time. Big comfy bed. Fresh towels daily. About a 20 minute walk to the York Minster and all the sights of York. 2 minutes walk from hotel are an Indian restaurant, Italian restaurant and a pub. Also a Sainsburys local. Really quirky bar, but unfortunately they had no diet mixers which was disappointing. The restaurant wasn’t doing evening meals and we didn’t have breakfast so can’t comment on food. Would definitely recommend this hotel .

My wife arranged our two night stay at the Mount Royal hotel to celebrate my 75th birthday. As I am Hilton Gold member it was a lovely departure from the humdrum chain hotels that we have become used to. On arrival we were upgraded to a garden suite with patio doors that gave us access to the very large and interesting garden. The suite itself was very well furnished with lots of home comforts. Including a small fridge safe and a modern TV with Freeview play that also gave access to Netflix and Amazon Prime. All of the staff were very helpful but I need to make a special mention to Glen the Super efficient waiter in the breakfast room. He is a great asset to the hotel and amused us with his wit “you can’t have scrambled eggs without the chives as they come together in the tin”. I must say it was really nice having such a fabulous choice for breakfast and it being served to the table instead of the ubiquitous breakfast buffet that seems to be the norm these days. All in all a lovely stay.

It is the fourth time we have stayed over the last few years and the Mount Royale as before exceeded our expectations. The room was on the ground floor. spacious and comfortable with that unique country house feel and beds that cosseted us. The only minor gripe was that the heated towel rail in the bathroom didn't heat up, but we mentioned it only on the third day as it wasn't key to our comfort. The staff were as always charming, efficient and welcoming. The breakfasts were excellent in their variety and quality, but the real test which the hotel passed with flying colours, was to accommodate as extra breakfast guests on one of the days, our daughter and three month old baby in a room away from the main restaurant. The group of us were made to feel completely at ease and as well supplied as would have happened with the main breakfast service.

We spent two nights at the Mount Royale Hotel . Our room was the only one available, described as a garden suite and expensive. As this was our first holiday in ages, because of Covid, we decided to take the room and looked forward to a luxurious weekend. Our room decoration and bathroom was tired, verging on shabby. The carpet although hoovered had marks ,the ceiling had several stains from a previous water leak and the veranda area was shabby and uncared for. The room had an unpleasant damp smell which I think came from the planted border in the corridor outside the room. The bedroom furniture was shabby , the two small chairs had loose backs and the leather armchairs placed in front of the small and very basic TV had sloping seats that tended to slide you onto the floor unless you concentrated! I suspect the room had not been decorated for years. There were some positives. The dining room was appealing and the breakfast good. The dining room staff were helpful and friendly as was the bar tender. The location is great for walking into York. Overall our stay felt like a three star experience at a much more than three star price.

We visited this hotel for my partners 30th birthday. Wow what more can i say. Absouletly fantastic hotel. We arrived at 2pm on a rather wintery saturday. We swiftly checked in and was shown to our room. It had been upgraded due to it been my partners 30th. The room was amazing. Soo big. Large double sized bed, large bathroom with bath tub and walk in shower. Room has tea and coffee and everything you needed. Room looked out over the gardens and would love to come back in the summer to check out these and the outdoor pool. Staff was so friendly and welcoming. Once again an amazing stay

I booked a two night getaway for my partner’s birthday -on arrival the outside of the hotel did look quite tired - signage needed a good clean however don’t let this deter you. We had an amazing break here - the hotel has real character & feels incredibly welcoming - we loved the quirkiness of it & enjoyed mooching about in the extensive grounds as well as the interior. The staff are incredibly friendly & literally cannot do enough to help you or make your stay a memorable one. We were greeted front of house by Reuben who was really lovely - he upgraded us to an executive suite with a four poster bed for no extra cost which was a real treat - he helped carry our bags up the huge staircase & later when we chilled out in Oxos bar he enjoyed a laugh & banter with us - he was a credit to this hotel as were all the staff we met! I cannot praise the staff highly enough. The rooms were a little tired in places & admittedly could do with a lick of paint but this hotel is a gem 🌟 We were expecting to pay extra for breakfast but this was included in the room rates- breakfast had to be one of the best we have experienced - lots of choice- fresh coffee, juice, fresh fruits, yoghurt, porridge, full cooked breakfast, kippers etc! The full English was beautifully cooked , as were the the scrambled eggs with smoked salmon on a toasted muffin - A1 - breakfast set us up for the day! It was only a 15 minute stroll to Micklegate - we dined at an amazing Italian Delrios on both nights - Can’t wait to return here in the summer so we can enjoy the pool/hot tub & beautiful walled gardens
