"If you are Chinese, I strongly suggest thinking twice before staying here. I was first assigned a room in the side building that reeked of mould and had a broken bathroom sink. After complaining, I was moved to an accessible room on the same floor, despite having no accessibility needs — no bathtub, an absurdly tiny sink, and a mirror positioned for wheelchair users. If this was considered an appropriate replacement, perhaps they should have provided a wheelchair too. What made the room allocation even more questionable was that the floor, with around 11–12 rooms, appeared largely empty. And it certainly wasn’t because of good soundproofing — I could clearly hear guests talking in other rooms. So why was I first given a mouldy, broken room, and then an entirely unsuitable accessible room when the floor did not even appear full? Separately, there was a white female receptionist whose behaviour made the experience even worse: dramatic eye-rolling, a condescending attitude, followed by the most artificial “professional” smile imaginable. I cannot prove the motivation behind the room allocation, but as a Chinese guest, the entire experience left me feeling singled out and discriminated against. A terrible room can be an accident. Repeatedly questionable treatment is harder to explain away."

"It's about a 17-minute walk from the train station, which can be a bit of a trek if you have luggage. You can store your bags for free in the basement before check-in. It's an old building, so there's no elevator, but the staff kindly helped me carry my luggage upstairs when I checked in. The lack of a bed curtain was a slight inconvenience, but overall it was a good stay."

"Upon entering the room, I noticed the toilet and cups were dirty, and there was limescale in the kettle. I informed the front desk, and they quickly sent someone to clean it, so their response was prompt. The guy at the front desk spoke excellent English, which was easy to understand. The hotel's location is superb, situated by the River Ouse, within walking distance of the train station, and very convenient for visiting the old city. The breakfast was incredibly rich and delicious, offering great value for money!"

"Caught in a weekend + peak season, the room rate was quite expensive. The room itself wasn't very big, but we were able to check in early. With the sofa bed pulled out, there was barely any space left after opening our luggage. The windows were sealed, and the air conditioning worked decently. Breakfast was a typical English breakfast, and it was included by default with our stay. There were no vegetables or fruits, but it was filling enough. The hotel is within walking distance of the train station. Recommended for a short stay."

"An average stay, just a place to sleep on your journey. Temperature was not under our control. Thermostat was stuck on 18 (I thought the button was stuck but was later told they have set them all to 18) so it just pumped out freezing air. Naturally you'd then sleep under covers, only to wake in the middle of the night boiling hot because the air con turns itself off in the night."

"I only stayed for the one night but I was impressed with the pleasant demeanour and organisational skill of the staff. My room was very clean and bed very comfortable. Finally, I had a very enjoyable breakfast with all staff being very attentive. I would certainly stay again if ever I was in the area ."

"The hotel is very close to the train station, about a 5-minute walk through the city walls, which is very convenient. York city isn't large, and most attractions and shopping streets are within walking distance. We booked two rooms and arrived a little after 2 PM. The front desk initially thought we only had one room and assigned us a room on the first floor, ignoring our request for a higher floor. When I told him we had booked two rooms, he then said the other room could be on a higher floor, but we couldn't get the keys until after 3 PM. So, we had to take all our luggage to the first-floor room first. As soon as we opened the door, there was a strange smell, which got a little better after turning on the air conditioning. Since we were only staying for one night, we didn't bother to discuss it further. When we returned in the evening, we picked up the keys for the second room, which was on a higher floor. The cleanliness was noticeably better than the first-floor room, and there was no strange smell. Both rooms were quite spacious, which was a plus. Breakfast was semi-buffet style; you could order one hot dish, and then help yourself to bread, fruit, and other items."

"The location is great, and a morning stroll through the town was lovely. The only downside was that the hotel's air conditioning wasn't working. I contacted the front desk three times, but to no avail. The first time, the lady at the front desk suggested turning it on and off multiple times to activate it. The second time, she came to the room to demonstrate, but when that didn't work, she said she'd go to the server room to adjust the AC settings, which also yielded no results. The third time, when I contacted a different staff member at the front desk, I was asked, 'Has someone already tried to fix it?' Then they brought a fan, repeatedly saying 'I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm so sorry.' They explained that the AC cooling system couldn't be activated because the weather in York was cool. It was just 'I'm sorry' after that. It was the first time I'd heard such a reason for an AC not working. Nevertheless, the town of York is still very beautiful."

"Environment: Probably the best hotel in York, right? Of course, it's not cheap. The executive room I booked was very spacious, and the bed was comfortable. Facilities: My friend and I both booked executive rooms, but it seems some rooms are older and some are newly renovated. The older rooms had a drying rack, which my newer room didn't seem to have. Cleanliness: Decent. Service: Executive rooms come with breakfast, but it's just a typical British buffet breakfast, not much variety. I personally didn't like it; maybe I'm just tired of 'white people food'."
