The Badaling Great Wall's fortress is trapezoidal in shape, wider in the west and narrower in the east, with two gates on either side. The inscription on the east gate reads 'Juyong Outer Fortress', while the west gate bears the inscription 'Key to the North Gate'. The Great Wall extending north from the fortress is known as the North Great Wall, which has 12 watchtowers. To the south of the fortress lies the South Great Wall, which has 7 watchtowers. The South Great Wall has fewer visitors compared to the North Great Wall, so if time allows, it is advisable to walk the South Great Wall first, then the North Great Wall.
