Visit Bao Dong Pavilion to see the unique and exquisite ancient sculptures

The sculpture exhibition at the Shanghai Museum (East Pavilion) is very exquisite. The fully upgraded sculpture gallery has expanded the categories of cultural relics on display and extended the historical timeline of the exhibition. The entire display features a total of 289 pieces/sets of three-dimensional cultural relics, nearly double the number of the sculpture exhibition at the People's Square Pavilion, with one-third being exhibited to the public for the first time. Among them, there are many representative treasures and unique cultural relics, such as the largest surviving gilded bronze statue of the Dali Kingdom's Mahavairocana, and the only archaeologically unearthed Qingtian stone Buddha statue with the 'Dadu' inscription, which is a unique piece. The display also showcases for the first time a batch of remnants of the Yungang Grottoes sculptures that were reclaimed from Japan in the late 1940s; the central position of the exhibition hall highlights the comparative display of Buddhist statues from the Northern and Southern Dynasties. The exhibition uses time as the vertical axis to display works that are representative of ancient Chinese sculpture history. It includes pre-Qin bronze sculptures, Qin and Han terracotta figures and portrait stones, Wei and Jin piled sculptures, Buddhist statues in gold, bronze, and stone from the Northern and Southern Dynasties, Sui and Tang Dynasties, as well as relief sculptures from the Yungang and Longmen Grottoes, terracotta figures from the Five Dynasties Southern Tang Qinzong Mausoleum, temple statues and bronze sculptures from the Song, Liao, and Jin Dynasties, and the Tibetan, Han, and court statue systems dominated by Tibetan Buddhist bronze sculptures from the Yuan, Ming, and Qing Dynasties, as well as bamboo, wood, and ivory carvings and other folk art sculptures from the Ming and Qing Dynasties.
