Blue Pearl of Mongolia: Khuvsgul Lake
Khuvsgul Lake is the largest freshwater lake in Mongolia when it relates to volume, and second largest by area. It is called the blue pearl of Mongolia for the color and high water clarity. Khuvsgul is also regarded as "the younger sister" of, the more famous and more massive Baikal Lake.
Khuvsgul holds almost 70% of Mongolian fresh water reserves and its water is drinkable without any treatment.
Like Baikal Lake, Khuvsgul is a rift lake. It is 136 kilometers long, and its maximum depth is 262 meters. In the land of deserts and where the most lakes are salty, Khuvsgul is considered sacred.
Mongolia - Land of Horses, Skies, and Lakes
#timetotravel Greatly enjoyed visiting Mongolia and in particular, going to its northern and largest lake, the beautiful Lake Khusval/Hoskul. Sister to the more famous Lake Baikal, Khusval is no less majestic and clear. The lake is just warm enough to brave its waters but it’s still freezing cold.
Loved the chance to stay in a very cozy wood-fired yurt or ger as the Mongolians called it, and brush up on my equestrian skills on the small but hearty Mongolian horses.
The best serviced resort ,Khuvsgul, Mongolia
Leona Resort which is located in Khuvsgul province of Mongolia was proper place to go with your family. Nice and chill. The food was recommendable. I would give them 200%.

Hovsgol Lake Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Jun)
Mongolian beautiful lake Khuvsgul in winter time. You can see the rocks in the depths of the lake even it's frozen.
Lake Khovsgol is the largest fresh water lake in Mongolia by volume and second largest by area. It is located near the northern border of Mongolia, about 200 km west of the southern end of Lake Baikal. It is nicknamed the "Younger sister" of those two "sister lakes. #awesomepic #lakeview #wintergetaway #frozen #instagramworthydestinations #unforgettableexperiences
September Travel
Last night, I impulsively booked my flight, and by 6 AM, I was on my way. I flew from Ulaanbaatar to Murun and then continued the journey for over an hour to reach the serene shores of Khoton Lake. The lake's crystal-clear waters are reminiscent of Southeast Asia's glassy seas. The sight took my breath away, and I found myself wanting to sit and lose myself in daydreams amidst the natural splendor!
Exploring Khuvsgul Lake, Mongolia
1. Transportation: Fly from Ulaanbaatar to Murun.
2. Accommodation: MS Guesthouse, easily found via Google Maps. ( the owner speaks English), offering breakfast. Remember to bring your own toiletries and a disposable towel. The guesthouse offers both log cabins and Mongolian yurts; I opted for a log cabin. Be sure to contact the owner in advance to arrange for pick-up and drop-off services. Both food and accommodation are reasonably priced, and the most important aspect is the owner's exceptional kindness!
3. Travel: Consult with the guesthouse owner for detailed travel itineraries. It's advisable to spend a few days at Khuvsgul Lake to fully appreciate its serene beauty. I decided to go boating and hiking during my stay.
A breathtaking trip to the northern part of Mongolia / A recommended off-the-beaten-path destination for winter travel!
I didn't expect the winter in Mongolia, a desolate world of ice and snow, to be more beautiful than I imagined despite various inconveniences.
This time, we flew from Beijing to Ulaanbaatar and then to Murun. Our guide and driver in Murun picked us up at the airport and started our 5-day trip to the north of Mongolia 🇲🇳.

【Travel Tips】
1. Pre-departure preparation: Mongolia's e-visa can be applied for on the website, and it is very convenient to get a visa in more than a day; the driver who chartered a car to Ulaanbaatar took us to the city center to exchange Mongolian Tugrik and phone cards, and the current exchange rate is about 1:470. The Unitel phone card still has a poor signal 📶😂
2. Itinerary arrangement
Day1: Fly from Ulaanbaatar to Murun, hike in the canyon
Day2: Visit the Chatan tribe, see the reindeer 🦌
Day3: Wonderland unfrozen river, luxury log cabin
Day4: Ice walking on Lake Khuvsgul
Day5: Fly from Murun to Ulaanbaatar
3. Transportation 🚗
To go to Lake Khuvsgul and the Chatan tribe, you first need to get to Murun. There are public buses/planes/chartered cars etc. from Ulaanbaatar. Highly recommend taking a plane!! It's too hard to drive for more than ten hours. Because the round-trip flight is five days, the itinerary is also set for five days, just in time.
4. Accommodation recommendation 🏨
I knew before departure that I couldn't have high hopes for accommodation. The accommodation in the village, where you can't take a shower, there is no running water, and the toilet is built outdoors with wooden boards. When we checked into the Jargant Lodge, we were completely amazed!! Soft beds 🛏️, high-end automatic toilets 🚽, and hot showers 🚿. 👍🏻The most important thing is that the view is too good, the camp is on a hill, with no obstructions, backed by the forest, and the snow-capped mountains 🏔️ opposite are unobstructed. I have to say that the boss is very good at choosing a location.
5. Travel highlights 👀
①: The Chatan people and the cute and tame reindeer 🦌 The tribe living in the taiga forest makes a living by raising reindeer. I was really amazed at their cold resistance... The ⛺ where the Chatan people live is called teepee, and I was very glad that I didn't choose to live in a teepee after seeing it.
② The unfrozen river with a fairy aura 🏞️ It's too beautiful and too fairy, it's a highlight that can't be missed in the trip!!! The clear river can still see the tender green water grass.
③ Crossing the primeval forest 🌲 The scenery along the way is very beautiful! In order to save time, we chose a shortcut to Lake Khuvsgul. We walked hard in the primeval forest, a 75° steep uphill, and the whole journey was a rugged mountain road. But I also saw the scenery that I probably won't see again in my life. The driver's driving skills are top-notch 👍🏻. I just regret a bit that I didn't choose a more expensive off-road vehicle and chose the Russian UAZ off-road van. Off-road vehicles will be more comfortable + save time.
④ The navy ship of Lake Khuvsgul 🚢
The lake is frozen solid in winter, with blue ice and bubbles, and you can also play sledding 🛷 We also saw the legendary Mongolian navy ship. If it's summer, you can take a cruise around the lake, but unfortunately it's not open in winter, so you can only take a photo.
