I did only three things in Baoshan, Yunnan: drinking coffee, soaking in hot springs, and visiting ancient towns
☕️Drinking coffee
Baoshan, Yunnan is an outstanding representative of Chinese coffee, known at home and abroad. When you come to Baoshan, you must experience the coffee culture
1⃣️Berton Manor
From coffee beans to coffee and then to coffee feast, in this place that looks like a southern French manor, you can taste the different flavors of coffee
2⃣️Hukuo Coffee Manor
Drinking coffee is a pleasure, living in a coffee manor, and taking in the first coffee village in China is even more enjoyable. I really don't want everyone to know about this little-known treasure manor.
.
♨️Soaking in hot springs
The fame of Baoshan hot springs, I believe I don't need to say more
1⃣️Tengchong Rehai Hot Spring
Just the Rehai big boiling pot, a hot spring egg makes people fascinated
2⃣️Bangla Palm Hot Spring
"The first strange soup in western Yunnan", here the mountains are high and the valleys are deep, the woods are lush, the heat is steaming, soak in it, and the fatigue will disappear
.
📷Heshun Ancient Town
Of course, when you come to Tengchong, you have to go to Heshun Ancient Town. This is the city at the end of the world in Xu Xiake's mouth. It is a place with diverse cultures, heavy history, full of dreams and legends, and also a ancient town full of life, worth strolling slowly.
Check-in points:
1⃣️Heshun Library
2⃣️Mabang Tea Room
3⃣️Boat Dock
4⃣️Century-old Vegetable Street
In fact, every angle in the ancient town has different scenery. Here, you don't have to pursue check-in positions, just stroll around and take pictures casually.
.
Left hand coffee right hand tea
In Yunnan, be slower, be lazier, that's right

Heshun Ancient Town Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in May)
I've visited countless ancient towns, but I'm still captivated by Heshun Ancient Town for the 100th time
I came to Tengchong during the ginkgo season, but what I'm most eager to do is to take a walk in Heshun Ancient Town.
Because I grew up in the water town of Wuzhen and have been to various ancient towns, cities, and villages, my immunity to ancient towns is really strong.
But Heshun is the most special one.
The rice fields here are not props for photo ops,
The old streets and alleys here have real life,
The people here never cater to tourists,
This ancient town on the border, listed in National Geographic,
Is not suitable for tourism, but for living.

A leisurely summer day trip guide to Heshun Ancient Town
Heshun Ancient Town has a history of over 600 years, built by the mountains and water, surrounded by volcanoes, with a basin in the middle, and is a cultural tourism town on the ancient Southwest Silk Road.
There are more than 100 Qing Dynasty mansions, temples, Taoist temples, ancestral halls, and residences in Heshun Ancient Town. The architecture is a blend of Chinese and Western styles, featuring Huizhou architecture, Western styles, and Southeast Asian charm.
🌸 Ancestral Hall
The ancestors of Heshun Ancient Town were mostly Central Plains immigrants who were ordered to relocate during the military colony system of the Ming Dynasty. Therefore, although it is close to the China-Myanmar border, the culture of Han-style ancestral halls is a major attraction. By the Qing Dynasty, there were already ancestral halls of eight major families.
Among them, the Cun family's ancestral hall is the earliest built, dating back to the Jiaqing period of the Qing Dynasty. Although it represents Han culture, the main gate is composed of three European-style round arch doors and a Southeast Asian-style door header. It is the best representative of the integration of Han culture with Southeast Asian and Western cultures in the ancient town.
🌸 Shuanghong Bridge
The old bridge is said to have been built by the Cun family, the local deity, at the beginning of the Ming Jiajing period and was rebuilt during the Qing Guangxu period; the new bridge was built in 1921. The two bridges are named for resembling double rainbows lying on the river surface.
🌸 Heshun Library
On the other side of the old bridge is the Heshun Library, established in 1928. Its predecessor was the Xinxin Society organized by Cun Fuching of the Tongmenghui at the end of the Qing Dynasty, which was later expanded into a library by overseas Chinese from Burma. Heshun Ancient Town is a famous hometown of overseas Chinese, with a permanent population of over 7,000 people, but there are more than 30,000 overseas Chinese. Therefore, the library has a rich collection of donated literature and inscriptions from cultural figures such as Hu Shi. Heshun Library is the largest library in rural China and is also an important national cultural preservation unit.
🌸 Heshun Alley
A district composed of nearly 10,000 square meters of ancient buildings, located by the Sanhe River. It includes the old residence of Zhang Songlin, the late Qing general of Tengyue, the Horse Caravan Museum, Heshun Wetland, and other attractions.
🌸 Thousand-Hand Guanyin Ancient Tree Group
Composed of seven hundred-year-old camphor trees on Zhangjia Slope in Heshun, five of which are in a row. The tree crowns are towering and cover the sky like huge umbrellas. The trunks resemble the Thousand-Hand Guanyin stretching out in all directions, very beautiful.
🌸 Zhongtian Temple
Along the main axis of the ancient town of Heshun, you can see Zhongtian Temple, which was built in the eighth year of the Ming Chongzhen period, from the top of the mountain. The most exquisite part is the eight-door screen of the imperial hall, which is delicately crafted.
The platform in front of Zhongtian Temple is one of the best spots to take a panoramic view of the ancient town.

Tengchong Rehai Scenic Area
The Rehai is located in the southwest of Tengchong, covering an area of about 9 square kilometers. There are 88 hot springs, warm springs, boiling springs, and fountains, among which more than 10 have water temperatures above 90oC, making it the largest geothermal area in China. The entire Rehai tourist area is surrounded by green mountains, with a river flowing from east to west along the mountain terrain. The river water blends with the hot springs on the riverbed, allowing for bathing in the river all year round, which the locals call 'Bath Pond River'.
Walking slowly up the mountain path, the scenery along the way and the various distinctive hot springs and boiling springs make one temporarily forget the fatigue of the body. The first stop is the Toad Mouth Fountain, where huge rocks resemble several toads lying on their backs, swallowing clouds and puffing mist, spouting jets of air and water columns into the sky. It is said that the fountain's water temperature is 95.5oC, with a flow rate of 1 liter per second, erupting every 1-3 seconds, reaching a height of 1.5 meters. Next to the fountain is the Bath Pond River Waterfall, where the water flows gently, cascading down with a drop. This spectacle of one up and one down, one hot and one cold, draws countless tourists' exclamations. Next to it is the Lion's Head, where the giant cliff has been eroded by the boiling spring water over the years, forming gullies that from a distance look like the head of a long-haired lion.
Continuing forward, one arrives at the beautiful gorge, where a pool of hot spring 'Immortal's Bath Pond' is just right for people to soak in. The Immortal's Bath Pond is also known as the Beauty Pool, which is now occupied by the Beauty Pool Hotel, requiring a hotel stay to enjoy the hot spring. From the cliff, one can see several handsome men and beautiful women soaking in the hot spring, which indeed lives up to the name of Beauty Pool.
Following the mountain road, there are various tourist scenic areas created by hot springs along the way, one of which is a beautiful rock known as the Beauty Spring Skirt, with boiling water flowing from the spring eye above, dressing it like a beautiful multicolored skirt.
The Drumming Spring, with a water temperature of 94.8oC, is named for the rumbling sound it makes when steam and boiling water hit a large rock blocking the spring's eye, resembling the beating of a drum.
The Conceiving Spring is divided into male and female wells. It is said that drinking this spring water can help with pregnancy and treat infertility, attracting many young couples to drink the water in hopes of having children.
The Glasses Spring, with two springs side by side and a water temperature of 94oC, is named for its crystal-clear water shaped like glasses, also resembling two sisters singing side by side, hence it is also called the Sisters Spring.
Further up is the Pearl Spring, with a water temperature of 94oC and hundreds of steam holes at the bottom. Strings and rows of bubbles continuously emerge from the ground, resembling a bushel of sparkling, translucent pearls, shining in various colors under the sunlight.
Continuing upwards, one reaches the most spectacular sight of Rehai, the Big Boiling Pot. The Big Boiling Pot is a circular hot spring with a diameter of over 6 meters and a depth of 1.5 meters. The surface temperature is 96.6oC, and the bottom temperature can reach 102oC, with a flow rate of 0.94 liters per second. The boiling water churns day and night, and the steam rises all year round. Around the Big Boiling Pot is a rest area for tourists. Sitting down in the open-air teahouse, with a pot of fragrant tea, a bucket of hot spring, basking in the sun, and a gentle breeze on the face, one can treat ailments and enjoy a wonderful life.
Tengchong in Yunnan is a must-visit for its volcanic hot springs and boiling pots
Yunnan is a peculiar place, home to various ethnic groups who are adept at singing and dancing, and it also boasts a unique geographical and climatic environment.
This trip to Yunnan finally brought me to the long-awaited Baoshan Tengchong, the hot spring capital on the western border of Yunnan. I arrived at the peculiar Rehai Geothermal Hot Springs Scenic Area. Surrounded by mist and the smell of sulfur, breathing in the strong sulfur aroma, I felt the scorching heat. Rehai's natural volcanic geothermal hot springs are numerous, with boiling hot spring water gushing out from the crevices, reaching temperatures of ninety-something degrees or even over a hundred degrees, giving an almost surreal feeling.
Walking on the land heated by billions of years of volcanic geothermal activity, strolling through the forest, hot spring waterfalls pouring out, various hot spring eyes of all sizes, often forming beautiful colored rocks at the bottom due to the geothermal heat year-round. The bubbling Pearl Spring, the Sister Spring Eyes on either side, the legendary Pregnant Spring that is said to induce pregnancy, the Drumming Spring with its drum-like water flow... I marveled at nature's craftsmanship every step of the way! Passing through the Science and Culture Corridor, learning about various knowledge of Tengchong's geothermal hot springs, was truly enlightening.
The Rehai Boiling Pot is another highlight of Rehai's geothermal features, a large spring eye resembling a huge boiling pot, a popular spot for taking photos. There's also the Tengchong hot spring egg wrapped in straw, one of Yunnan's eighteen oddities, along with peanuts, potatoes, and more, all of which can be steamed with the hot steam from the springs. If you get too hot from walking, you can also try a Rehai hot spring cultural and creative internet-famous ice cream, so dress lightly. Of course, you can also take home some of Rehai's sulfur soap and volcanic rocks, which are very useful. If you have time, you can also soak in the hot springs of Rehai Bath Valley, truly a resort for escaping the cold and vacationing!
Tengchong Travel Notes
I visited Tengchong in mid-January 2024
Stayed in Heshun Ancient Town. The entrance ticket was 55 yuan per person. Ticket checks are required when entering and moving around the town, but if you don't have your ticket, you can report your ID number to look up the purchase record. After 7:30 pm, taking a taxi back allows you to avoid the ticket check.
Stay: We stayed in the 'Colorful Clouds' room at Yifang Longtai Homestay, which offers a 270-degree panoramic view. The host was very warm-hearted and had turned on the bed's water heating before we arrived.
Clothing: During this season, Tengchong is quite cool in the morning and evening, but warm at noon. There's no need for short sleeves, but do bring sunscreen.
Transport: You can walk around Heshun Ancient Town, and taking a taxi to the scenic spots outside the town is not far. Driving in the town is inconvenient as it often requires navigating narrow roads.
Sights: In the morning, you can finish touring Heshun Ancient Town in half a day, where there's a morning market that you can visit with your ticket. You can also visit the Heshun Library.
In the afternoon, bring a swimsuit to the Rehai 'Big Rolling Pot'. You can buy tickets through the accommodation, which might be cheaper.
When in Tengchong, you must experience the hot springs. We chose Rehai because it's more authentic. Of course, there are also some five-star hotels with hot springs. Rehai is known for its sulfur hot springs, but there are also other types like carbonic acid springs. Other hotel hot springs mainly offer carbonic acid springs.
The next morning, we went to the Great Earth Tea Sea, but I must remind you that it's not the tea-picking season now, so there really isn't much to see or do. You might try it in early spring.
In the afternoon, we went to the Wetland Park, which is great for taking photos. I also tried a cup of Dendrobium drink.
