#Ma On Shan Park Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in May)
Ma On Shan park with festive decorations
The bunnies are here in Ma On Shan park! Well they have been displayed alongside with Frosty the Snowman ☃️ and Christmas Trees🎄, as well as stars, but I’m expecting more Chinese New Year elements will be added as the year of rabbit is getting close.
While they are not very natural looking, they are good for photos. Of course the park itself has a lot for photo opportunities and discoveries already - there are newly added mini trials scattered around the park, you may come across a trail inside a small forest of eucalyptus trees near the entrance, or a small bridge hidden in bushes of flowers, or a mini bamboo hideaway.
And now during the first month of 2023, you can also drop by the library which is right next to the park - a moving and sounding dinosaur is on display, so another place for photo-taking!

Hong Kong hiking dream
Ma on Shan peak. With a height of 702 metres (2,303 ft), it stands among the ten highest mountains in Hong Kong. The mountain borders Sha Tin and Tai Po districts. This is one of the best hikes I’ve done in Hong Kong and it is really worth you doing it.
It is best to start the hike at Ma On Shan BBQ site. There the trail leads up on the ‘family trail’ This will lead tp what looks like a dead end, ignore this and hop the fence. The real hike will begin . It starts off easy enough, with muddy but well defined path through the trees and vegetation.
The trees disappear and make way for lush green vegetation and mountainous vista ahead of you. Don’t stop, just keep going forward. The trail was excellent, the wind blowing and the fresh air around you. Invigorating
Keep going up the path, youll come to a dead end and a barrier. Igonore this, hop over it and continue going up. It gets steeper and more challenging as you go up but it;ll be worth it. The views also get better and better as you go.
The trail leads to what is known as Pyramid Peak, im unsure why I guess it kind of looks like a pyramid (maybe). What do you think?
The views from the top are simply awesome, and well worth the challengin climb. You’ll be glad you did it
To end the hike follow the signs and go back to a village and get the bus to Sai Kung. from there you can get a bus back into the city.

香港行山郊遊-馬鞍山 牛押山🐂
The Ma On Shan Country Trail begins at the Ma On Shan Country Park Barbecue Grounds. It offers a panoramic view of the entire Ma On Shan Country Park and Sai Kung Hoi.
Length: 4.5 km Time: 2 hours
It takes about 1.5 hours to climb slowly from the starting point to the Ngong Ping Plateau. Some plant names are marked on the road. Although the nameplates are relatively simple, the Chinese names, scientific names and family names are all available. Visitors can learn about different plant species. It takes about 30 minutes to walk to the one-three fork road from Shangcun, where there are clear directions to Ngong Ping.
Ngong Ping Grassland is surrounded by mountains such as Sifang Ma'an Mountain, Dajinzhong, Luchao Mountain and Shiya Mountain. Due to restrictions such as strong wind and water shortage, the main types of skin planting are short clump grasslands with low ecological value. There are several planting areas in the lower part of Ngong Binh, the purpose is to increase soil and water conservation and biodiversity through tree planting. The sign post that appears after crossing the Ngong Ping camp indicates the direction to Dashuijing. It takes about 30 minutes to walk to the end of the picnic trail.
Amenities: Information boards, gauge posts, picnic spots, barbecue pits, restrooms, gazebos.
traffic information
Starting point: 1. Take the MTR (get off at Heng On / Ma On Shan Station) or bus to Ma On Shan Heng On Village and Yiu On Village, go uphill on Liangyou Road next to the Ma On Shan Road roundabout, and walk for about 30 minutes to reach the restaurant next to Ma On Shan Barbecue country trail entrance;
2. Or take the Village Bus No. NR84 at Ma On Shan Sunshine City Bus Terminus or Yiu On Estate, get off at Ma On Shan Country Park Station, and walk along the road to Ma On Shan BBQ Ground;
3. As the frequency of the village bus is relatively sparse, you can take the New Territories green taxi directly from the downtown of Ma On Shan to the barbecue site of Ma On Shan Park.
Ending point: Go along Pak Kong Ao Road to Pago Che Station, take the green minibus No. 3 back to Sai Kung city center; or continue along Pak Kong Au Road to Sai Kung Highway, and take other public transportation to return to the city.
起點:1. 乘搭港鐵(恆安/馬鞍山站下車)或巴士至馬鞍山恆安邨、耀安邨,沿馬鞍山路迴旋處旁之良友路上山,步行約30分鐘便到達馬鞍山燒烤場旁的郊遊徑入口;
2. 或於馬鞍山新港城巴士總站或耀安邨乘村巴NR84號,在馬鞍山郊野公園車站下車,沿馬路步行至馬鞍山燒烤場起步;

Ma On Shan
Ma On Shan hike is one of the most challenging and rewarding hikes in the New Territories of Hong Kong. The mountain got its name because of the saddle-shaped peaks (Ma On literally means horse saddle) and is one of the top 10 highest mountains in HK. There are many ways to hike Ma On Shan. But I really like the point-to-point trail that starts in Ma On Shan Country Park, which will take you up a series of peaks of Tiu Shau Ngam, The Hunch Backs and descend into Sai Kung via Pyramid Hill and Ngong Ping plateau. At the latter part of the trail, you will also hike part of MacLehose Trail Section 4.
