Yu Garden: Old Soul in the New 🌿⛲️
Yu Garden, commonly known as Yuyuan is a popular tourist spot in Shanghai. While the environment around is uber commercialised with restaurants, foodcourts, souvenir shops and big chains like Starbucks, KFC etc.. many people overlook its most scenic and artistic part requiring an entrance ticket.
The garden is believed to have been built more than 400 years ago during the Ming Dynasty as a private property of the Pan family. It’s classical architecture is typical to its period. Every corner embodies beauty with a relaxed atmosphere surrounded by trees, flowers, bamboo and bonsaï plants 🪴 The garden feels brisk with ponds of fish.
Entrance 🎟 ➡️ 40¥
How to go ➡️ Yu Garden, 预园 is a 🚇 station on line 10 & 14. The entrance is close to the zigzag bridge which is the central part where most people flock for pictures.

Shanghai’s Iconic Towers… Closer 🌇🌃✨
While The Bund remains the most popular place for the perfect picture-postcard of the city, have you ever thought of having a closer look at those towers? 🤩
I found Lujiazui on a day trip. My friend and I took a bus from Shanghai Railway station to get off at People’s Square, but unfortunately missed our stop and ended up getting off at this random bus stop in Pudong district 🙈 We walked a bit and found this amazing flyover ring pathway above the main road which allows you to have a closer look at those towers: Shanghai World Financial Center, Jin Mao Tower, Shanghai Tower & The Oriental Pearl Tower🤩✨ It’s such a fantastic spot for urban pictures! 📸 The pathway is also connected to the malls around. It gets busy in the late afternoon/evening especially when the lights are on. A must visit when in Shanghai 💯
How to go ➡️ Lujiazui metro station on line 2 & 14, 陆家嘴 is right at this spot. Climb the stairs to get on the flyover pathway.

Black Lattes & Sichuan Peppercorn Coffee
Straight from 🇯🇵 Japan 🇯🇵 , ☕ NO COFFEE ☕ has opened its first overseas branch in Shanghai at TX Huaihai.
Haven’t tried their black latte yet? To make it, fresh milk is splashed over ice cubes before coffee and other flavorings are added on top. If you look closely at the cup, you’ll see the black coffee on top slowly seeping into the milk below, creating a clash of black and white that looks almost like a traditional Chinese watercolor painting.
Ordering an americano is an easy way to figure out if the café’s coffee beans are up to snuff. At NO COFFEE, the beans are high quality and seem to be a medium/dark roast. We definitely weren’t disappointed.
If americanos aren’t your thing, there are a bunch of novelty drinks to choose from as well, like the Sichuan pepper & chestnut latte, red bean and juniper oat latte, and strawberry mocha. Proportions and ingredients that go into each drink are clearly noted on the menu, so you always know exactly what you’re going to get.
Fitting into the theme of TX Huaihai, the café interior is very modern and almost completely black and white. While a few, bench-like seats can be found among the shop’s merchandise, it’s not the café you’d want to visit for reading or working on a laptop. If you’re looking to grab a coffee while on the go, however, definitely make a stop at NO COFFEE and try something new.

Shanghai’s Hidden Lane Coffee Shop
Ban She Café is hidden in one of Shanghai’s old lane compounds off of Nanchang Road. It can be a bit hard to find, but here’s how to make your way into this hidden gem:
Walking along Nanchang Road towards street number 254, you’ll see the mint green door of Ban She restaurant. Next to the restaurant is a small door leading into the lane complex. Pass through the door, look to the right at the first intersection, and you’ll see Ban She Café.
The shop itself has a traditional Chinese vibe, with antique furniture, a courtyard, and lots of greenery. As you might expect from the surroundings, it’s pretty tiny overall – there are just a few tables spread out across the shop. Books line the walls as rays of sunshine pass through the large windows.
With two floors in total, the first floor is a quiet space fit for reading and coffee sipping, while light meals and chatter are better suited for the second floor.
The atmosphere of this semi-hidden café is excellent for reading, working, or simply enjoying a quiet afternoon.

Coffee & Dessert in Shanghai’s Koreatown
For a classic café experience, head to Cuiqu in Koreatown for some stand-out drip coffee and desserts.
We’ve heard that the café’s design concept was based on the Gryffindor common room, and it really does resemble it both lighting and coziness. Here, books line the shelves built into the back wall as patrons sip coffee in cozy lounge chairs and at the long wooden table. Bar stools and tables can be found in the center of the café, in addition to a staircase leading up to more seating on the second floor.
Outdoor seating is available in front of the café, though the nearby street area tends to be a bit busy with many people passing by. With the weather warming up, though, it’s not a bad idea to consider sitting outside and enjoying the sunshine over an iced drink. Indoor seating is varied and comfortable, with many patrons hanging out with books or their computers for the whole afternoon.
The soufflés at Cuiqu are a big hit, and one is also included in the afternoon tea set which means you’ll get more bang for your buck if you visit with a friend. Intricately crafted cakes are also for sale and we particularly recommend the strawberry ones. Freshly baked breads and pastries are also available and often sold out quickly. Head over early to claim the best seats and get your first pick on pastries.

Kathleen’s Waitan: A Meal with a View
Today we visited the award-winning Kathleen's Waitan as part of China Restaurant Week. Once rated as a "Best-View Restaurant" by "City Weekend," Kathleen's new location Waima Road features a stunning 270-degree view of the Huangpu River and Lujiazui. On a sunny day, this is an amazing place to enjoy a tasty meal with friends.
🖼️ Environment 🖼️
After taking the elevator to the 5th floor, you're greeted by several spacious dining areas. Large windows provide a panoramic view of the river. Better yet, walk up one floor to the open-air terrace where the view is nothing short of jaw-dropping.
🍽️ Recommended Dishes 🍽️
We don't normally recommend the bread, but Kathleen's was so fresh and tasty we ordered a second helping. Add a little butter for a delightful pre-appetizer snack.
🥗 Iberian Ham Salad 🥗
Iberian ham is shaved thin and served over fresh greens, cantaloupe slices, grated parmesan cheese, and a balsamic vinaigrette.
🥩 Prime Rib Steak 🥩
We ordered ours on the rare side and it didn't disappoint! The meat was tender and flavorful.
🍰 Napoleon Cake 🍰
Served with fresh strawberries, we very much wanted more of this one!

Inventive Drinks & Desserts in Shanghai
Tea Funny is a tiny café that you might have just walked right past if it weren’t for the trailing line outside of it. We dropped by to see what all the fuss is about.
The shop’s interior combines bright colors and Zen elements, creating a unique space to enjoy some caffeine or an afternoon snack.
The menu is pretty funky and has a lot of cool choices. Drinks include a Thai-tea style take on a classic coffee and mulled wine mixed with tea.
When it comes to desserts, you might be surprised by what you find. There’s a cream puff designed to resemble a certain former US president, a cake shaped like a gray rain cloud, and even a blue and white medicine capsule cake.
One of the highlights here are the cookie cups. They’re delicious and great for the environment, since you’ll be able to bite right into your cup after you’ve finished your milk tea. We went with the 🍵 matcha flavored cup 🍵 but there are three flavors to choose from.
The café’s staff are super friendly and happy to make recommendations based your preferences. Stop by if you’re in the area. This café can get packed on the weekends (like most of the shops on Yongkang Road), so try to visit during the week if you have the chance.

Corner Cone Gelato: A Wukang Road Treat
Located on the first floor of the iconic Wukang Mansion is 🍨 Corner Cone Gelato 🍨, a dessert shop that’s carved out a solid place for itself in the Shanghai scene.
🍦 Soft serve 🍦 is king here, with lots of flavors and styles of cones to choose from. While we went for the coffee flavored soft serve, other flavors include peach, chocolate, milk, and more.
When it comes to ice cream shops, the service here is pretty top notch. Each cone comes with an extra cup, spoon, and wet napkin, ensuring you’ll have a way to handle any potential drips of melting ice cream.
If you come on the weekend or at peak hours, prepared for a short wait in line.

Micang Pop: Coffee & Sweat Treats
Micang Pop is a cute dessert café located near the bustling Middle Huaihai Road. After dinner, stopped by for some sweat treats and to check out the location.
Even at 8 PM, the shop was still pretty full. The best seats are the ones at the window – they’re perfect for people watching or having a chat with a friend.
The menu has all of the café classics, plus some interesting standouts. We especially liked the unique red date rooibos latte and the rich flavor of the honey latte.
For desserts, one of the café’s most popular choices is the soufflé, which takes around half an hour to prepare. Consider trying the crème brulee or pancakes covered with caramel, bananas, and hazelnuts, though needless to say it’s a bit on the heavy side.
Don’t miss out on the toasted marshmallow ice cream, which features a giant, slightly charred ice cream marshmallow on a stick that took us back to eating s’mores (minus the chocolate and graham crackers) around the campfire.
This café frequently comes out with seasonal menus around the holidays, so be sure to check back often.

Tiramisu & Coffee on Yongkang Road
In Dough We Trust is a small shop that’s very easy to find. With large windows and views of the street, there’s a long bench outside of the shop that’s often filled with people waiting for their turn to enter.
The interior is cozy and makes you feel as if you’ve taken a step into Amsterdam. There are probably enough tables and chairs for five to six people inside, in addition to some extra seats at the bar.
If you’d like to sit inside and are willing to wait, the owner will take down your phone number and give you a call when a space opens up. This’ll give you some time to explore the other shops nearby. Perhaps the most popular item at In Dough We Trust is the tiramisu, which has an excellent balance of bitter cocoa and sweet cream. It’s not too rich and is the perfect accompaniment to any drink.
We also recommend the red velvet cake, mulled wine, and brewed passionfruit, a drink we haven’t really seen anywhere else. In Dough We Trust is a neat hangout place and great for couples.

An Affordable Shanghai Flower Shop
While the weather seems to have been all over the place lately, we can now confidently say that spring is on its way!
Spring is the season of fresh flowers, so if you’re looking for somewhere to brighten up your apartment, head over to the Hongqiao Antique Centre! When you get there, take the elevator down to B1 and you’ll suddenly find yourself in a world of lush greenery.
There are tons of shops to choose from, but don’t settle for the first price you’re given! We recommend shopping around and doing some price comparisons before buying anything.
Right now, peonies and lilies are in season, and their bright colors make them perfect for adding a splash of color to any room. When we went, lots of sunflowers were also on sale.
If you speak Chinese, you can also consider asking the shopkeepers for their recommendations – they’ll often be happy to tell you which flowers are the freshest. They’ll also help you pick out flowers for bouquets. The variety of flowers for sale was pleasantly overwhelming, and the prices are pretty fair. Head over if you get the chance!

A Store For the Cat-Lover in All of US
Spending an afternoon with cats is a surprisingly good way to de-stress. We headed down to a cat café on Middle Huaihai Road.
The shop itself is fairly new and the interior is clean and tidy. While the shop is decorated with lots of pink color, both girls and guys are sure to enjoy their time at this two story venue.
Hanging around in the shop are 30 cats of different breeds, including Siamese, American shorthairs, ragdolls, and more. Needless to say, they’re all extremely cute. An interesting fact to note, we heard from the shopkeeper that the most expensive cat in the shop cost around 38,000 RMB! 😱😱😱
All of the cats are quite friendly and willing to be touched and pet, and there are loads of opportunities to take photos if that’s your thing.
For 86 RMB per person, you’ll get a drink plus one can of food for cat feeding. When you enter the shop, you’ll have the choice between single use slippers or shoe covers. Lint rollers are on hand to make sure you leave the shop fur-free.

A Staple Italian Restaurant in Shanghai
La Petite Fontaine is an established Italian restaurant in Shanghai that’s been around for a while already. The space stands out as it’s full of antiques and vintage decorations.
One of the first things you’ll notice is that the tables are nicely spaced apart which cuts down on the feeling of overcrowding that you’ve probably experienced at other popular restaurants in the city. Topped with plaid and floral tablecloths, tables are also often decorated with fresh flowers. The restaurant is spread throughout several different rooms.
With an antique piano, chandeliers, and countless framed photos, some may consider the space a bit cluttered, but to others, it just adds to the charm. You won’t easily find another space like this anywhere in Shanghai.
While the space was certainly a highlight of our visit, the main thing that attracted us here was the food. If you’re dining as a couple, we recommend trying one of the main courses designed for sharing, like the surf and turf set or the paella for two which includes an entire lobster. There are also set menus which include an appetizer, main, drink, and dessert. Other reliable picks are the steak as well as the lobster pasta. For dessert, we went for the molten lava cake. Try it if you’re a chocolate lover!

Peruvian Flavor in the Heart of Shanghai
Colca is a trendy Latin American restaurant specializing in Peruvian 🇵🇪 cuisine with a Spanish 🇪🇸 flare. Located next to Hengshan Road Station on Line 1, Colca has been racking up awards since it first opened several years ago.
🌴Atmosphere
The interior spaces are open and airy, with both indoor and outdoor seating and a modern, minimalist décor. The atmosphere is relaxed and casual.
📋Menu
Colca's China Restaurant Week menu offers a wide range of flavors and is well-portioned for two people. The amount of food is more than enough.
🥗Featured Dishes
- The “sopa criolla” has a bright tomato base, minced beef, macaroni, and a grilled quail egg all served in a coffee-style mug. A bowl of just this by itself would be a hearty meal.
- Colca's tuna steak was also particularly delicious. The bed of sautéed spinach paired well with the tuna, which had a peppery zest that wasn't overpowering.
- Be sure to save room for dessert! Both the dual chocolate and the Peruvian flan were deliciously rich and sweet. Brace yourself though for a bit of sugar shock if you eat too fast!

A Futuristic Shanghai Coffee Experience
Coffee intersects with fashion at InnerFact, a café located within a trendy clothing store in TX Huaihai. While the concept might sound a bit cramped, this industrial-style space with metallic surfaces is actually quite spacious and perfect for gatherings and hanging out.
Different types of seating can be found around the café, including seats around the island-shaped coffee bar as well as transparent chairs that are fixed to a raised platform. The concrete floors and black ceiling give it a bit of a grungy feel, and the well-lit café has side doors that open into an outdoor terrace.
Coffee, desserts, and light meals are available at the café, and baristas ring a bell when your order is ready to be picked up.
For a fun drink, try out the passion fruit coffee, which is an Americano with passion fruit and a splash of soda water. It’s pretty refreshing on a hot day. Pair it with a piece of rose lychee cake for an extra treat.
If you’re looking for something a bit warmer, you can’t go wrong with the ginger tea.

History&Stories on Shanghai’s Yuyuan Rd
Hidden on Yuyuan Road is a pop-up venue with no staff members and nothing for sale. Looks can be deceiving. It’s not your clothing boutique, instead, it’s a small storefront filled with stories depicted through pictures and text. As time passes, old stories on display at this city museum get swapped out for new ones.
Nestled at the entrance of a traditional lane residential compound, the tiny venue’s atmosphere feels a bit retro. At it’s opening, stories about what live used to be like on Yuyuan Road filled the walls and hung from the ceiling.
Passersby have a chance to contribute their own stories to the current theme as well. Stationery tools, pens, and paper are at their disposal, while tables and chairs provide an open space for writing.
Reading the stories and secrets of local residents give the street a new meaning and an added layer of depth. Most of the writings on display are written in Chinese, but some stories in foreign languages can be found too. Be sure to drop by if you’re in the area.

A Great Place for Brunch Hounds
Looking for a place for your next weekend brunch? Head to Anfu Road’s RAC Bar for a casual atmosphere and a menu full of the greatest hits.
With long, shared wooden tables, the restaurant feels cozy and communal. Spaces fill up quickly in the late morning, especially on the weekends. There might be a short wait before you get a seat.
When it comes to food, it’d hard to go wrong with anything on the menu. One of the standouts is the avocado toast. A morning staple that took the brunch scene by storm a few years ago, the version served at RAC still hits the spot every time. Here, carefully toasted bread is topped with a mountain of fresh avocado and an egg with bright yellow yolk. The size of the dish is generous and it fills up the whole plate.
RAC also serves up typical French favorites, including savory galette. The egg, mushroom, and smoked meat galette goes particularly well with a hot flat white.
You’ll also find sandwiches, crepes (we recommend the lemon one), and vegetarian options. For a light bite to eat or brunch with friends, RAC Bar should be your go-to.

A Great Place for DIY Creativity
Somewhat hidden behind More Than Eat in the bustling Jing’an Temple area is Julu758. Originally an instrument and meter factory, this relatively large building has been remodeled into a multifunctional innovation center.
Julu Road, which stretches from Jing’an through Huangpu is a popular street for shopping and dining. The street is likely named after a county in Hebei Province, though the literal meaning of “julu” is “giant deer.” In continuation with this play on words, a giant golden deer can be found outside of Julu758.
The industrial feel of the building has been preserved through the remodel, creating a fresh, open space with cafés, restaurants, shops, and work spaces. One of the highlights is FREITAG, a two story shop selling all sorts of functional bags made from recycled waterproof materials.
Worth a stop if you’re looking for a place to shop around or grab a bite to eat.

Steampunk, Witches, and Coffee! Oh my!
Sorceress Café is more than just coffee. With antiques and artistic trinkets displayed for sale, visiting this steampunk style café seems to take patrons back to the steam age.
As its name suggests, this shop places an emphasis on magic. There’s a working space fit for a witch, set up with a mechanical light, manuscripts, a magnifying glass, and even a pointy witch hat.
If you have the chance to sit down and relax over a warm drink, chances are the barista will give you a magical wand and cloak, setting up the irresistible opportunity for an Instagram shot.
The shop features a collection of antiques and decorative pieces of all sizes, the majority of them marked with prices and available for sale. There are antique pieces of furniture like chairs and tables, and also wearables like broches and watches. If it hasn’t been sold by the time you make your way to the shop, be sure to check out the antique typewriter.
While you’re free to browse through the shop without buying anything to drink, a menu and seating are available too. Aside from the usual coffee shop favorites, Sorceress Café also serves a selection of drinks with a magical twist. For a cool, minty refresher, try a Diabolo Menthe. Enjoy a World Top-50 Coffee Shop
Metal Hands is considered by some to be one of the best coffee shops in the city, so we dropped by the Nanchang Road branch for a visit. The whole road is lined with a bunch of small, independent shops, so swing by if you’re looking for a place to spend a peaceful afternoon.
This cozy café got its name from the traditional espresso machine where a metal lever is pulled to make one shot of the classic pick-me-up. An excellent place for people watching, the interior features cozy seating and floor-to-ceiling windows. While the café can get a bit crowded during peak hours, try visiting at dusk to enjoy the warm lighting and empty seats.
Seasonal drinks at Metal Hands have taken the internet by storm, especially the cinnamon latte which is topped with a sunny side up “egg.” We especially liked the ginger latte as well. Other offerings include classic, single origin brews and the “dirty,” a double espresso splashed with a shot of whole milk. The milk seems to linger near the top of the cup, making the espresso flavor seem stronger with each sip.
If all of the choices sound good to you and you’re not sure what to order, just ask one of the friendly baristas for some recommendations. There are two branches of Metal Hands in Shanghai; the other can be found on Yongjia Road.

Shanghai’s Husky Experience Center
Apartments in Shanghai tend to run a bit on the small side, which for some can be a bit of a deterrence when it comes to getting a pet. If you’re a dog lover who misses spending time with a loyal companion, head over to Husky Go! You’ll be able to spend some time up close and personal with 10+ huskies.
Located in Xuhui, this shop has their disinfection practices down pat. Before entering, you’ll be required to sanitize your hands and put covers over your shoes. You’ll also be shown a minute-long video, from which you’ll learn how to interact with the dogs and what to take special note of.
Upon seeing the huskies up close, we were surprised by their size and friendliness. They seem to be used to hanging out with visitors to the shop and being in their presence is actually pretty calming.
You can learn the dogs’ names by checking their bandannas. Dogs with black bandannas are male, while dogs with red bandanas are female. It’s said that the most popular dog is Xiao Pingguo (Little Apple) because of how willing she is to pose for pictures.
Tip: Group photos are taken from 1–3 PM. If you come during this time, you’ll have the chance to strike a pose together with all of the huskies.
Husky Go! Husky Experience Center

Japanese-Style BBQ in Gubei
Is there any problem that barbecue can’t solve? If you’ve found one, just keep eating…chances are it’ll eventually resolve itself. Shanghai’s Xianxia Road is famous for being lined with authentic Japanese restaurants, and Marumichi is no exception. Here, delicious cuts of grilled meat are accompanied with cold beer and served Japanese style.
If you stop by, be sure to order the skirt steak—in fact, you’re likely to see it on pretty much every table. The mouthwatering tenderness of the meat is even more tempting when accented by the restaurant’s garlic butter. If you’re a beginner in the world of barbeque, we recommend letting the waiters and waitresses take over the grill. That’s because when it comes to yakiniku, timing is everything. If you’re not an experienced griller, these thin cuts of meat can easily burn.
Once you’ve had your fill of meat, leave the grill on and try a toasted ice cream sandwich. While it seems like a scoop of ice cream between two pieces of standard white bread, the toasty flavor of the grill adds a unique flavor that fits perfectly at the end of a meal.
For other cuts of meat and sides, we recommend the beef tongue, beef clod, pork jowl, and mashed potatoes. You’ll find tatami seating on the second floor.
This restaurant tends to get pretty busy. Consider making a reservation in advance by phone to avoid spending too long in line.

🗓️ Today's recommendation is Liquid Laundry: A famous 📸 American-style restaurant in Shanghai
The interior has a sort of modern industrial design with a steampunk style. The day’s sunshine 🌤️ was the perfect complement to a delicious brunch.
Here are some must-try dishes:
🍳 Eggs Benedict with Smoked Beef Brisket -- This is a Liquid Laundry signature dish and a staple of American brunch. The brisket was tender and moist with just the right amount of flavor. This dish is only available on the weekend.
🥞 Lox Potato Pancake -- At first you might wonder if they forgot the pancake, which comes hidden under a sizable portion of delicious lox topped with pickle garnish, an egg, and dollop of caviar. The potato pancake struck the right balance between crunchy outside and tender inside. This dish is also only available on the weekend.
🥗 Fancy Nicoise Salad -- The salad is a mix of greens and other vegetables and served with seared tuna in a lemon tarragon-Dijon dressing. Personally the searing on the tuna was a bit overdone. The taste is refreshing, but watch out if you don’t like a lot of dressing.
🍓 Strawberry Waffle -- Another Liquid Laundry signature dish, this was a sweet sweet ending to a good meal. The waffle was crisp and tender, and the strawberries were fresh. It’s a good choice for dessert.
🍸 Service -- The menu design is rather iconic with an old-timey washboard on the back. The wait staff were spread a bit thin though, and it was sometimes hard to get their attention for refills on drinks or to order more food.
💳Price -- About 150 RMB per person.
📍 Address -- 2/F, KWah Centre, 1028 Huaihai Zhong Lu,
near Donghu Lu, Xuhui District (淮海中路1028号嘉华坊2楼,
近东湖路)
🚇 Transportation -- Metro Line 7 to Changshu Road Station, exit 6. Or Line 12 to Shanxi South Road Station, exit 7.
