While walking in Nuodeng Ancient Village, we passed by the Huang Xiachang Folk Art Collection Exhibition Hall and went in to find a friendly old man welcoming us. He introduced us to the traditional culture and architecture of the Bai ethnic group here. There are exhibits with a history of over a hundred years, all of which fortunately were left over from the Cultural Revolution! 😻The architectural style of the house is unique and full of meaning. It can be seen that the uncle has taken great care to preserve these precious histories. It is really rare! Nuodeng Village is a Bai village with a history of thousands of years. The residential buildings in the ancient town are built against the mountain and most of them were built during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. From a distance, the red bricks and black tiles dotted among the blue sky and green mountains are very pleasing to the eyes. The houses here are all built against the mountain, and there are up and down stairs to enter the village, so donkeys become the means of transportation. Nuodeng Village became widely known because of the program “A Bite of China”, and Nuodeng ham also became famous because of it. The reason why Nuodeng ham is so good is because the salt produced here is good. It is said that well salt is less salty and can keep the ham more fresh and fragrant. Every household here pickles ham, and the feeling of hanging them from the beams really tastes delicious. I had the ham here for lunch, it was really delicious, so I took some back. This was once an important stop on the ancient Tea-Horse Road and a trading location where merchants gathered, so there are a large number of exquisite buildings left here. In the village, there are Dragon King Temple, Ancient Jiangxi Guild Hall, Wanshou Palace, ancient banyan tree, "Timingfang" of Huang family and "Lingxing Gate" in front of Jade Emperor Pavilion and other scenic spots. The memorial archway in the ancient town is the largest existing ancient wooden memorial archway in western Yunnan. The ancient Pistacia trees in the village are thirty or forty meters high, and the oldest one is more than 800 years old.

There were no noisy tourists, no commercial atmosphere, only bluestone roads, ancient bridges, flowing water, and mottled walls, telling the vicissitudes of time. I walked through the alleys of the ancient town, as if I had traveled through time and returned to that quiet and distant era. In the depths of the ancient town, I met an old lady sitting in front of her house, holding a needle and thread, sewing traditional cloth shoes. Her face was full of the marks of time, but her eyes were exceptionally clear. I stopped and watched her needle and thread dance on the fabric, as if weaving ancient stories. The old lady saw my interest in her cloth shoes and warmly invited me to try them on. Wearing those cloth shoes, I felt an unprecedented comfort and warmth, as if every step I took was on the veins of history. In the afternoon, the sunlight shone through the clouds on every corner of the ancient town, giving the old buildings a golden coat. I walked into a teahouse, sat by the window, sipped local green tea, and looked at the scenery outside, feeling peaceful and satisfied. The elderly in the teahouse were either playing chess or chatting, their faces full of love and satisfaction for life.
