Just got back from Taizhou, and my biggest takeaway is that Taizhou can’t be explored like a single city! Attractions are spread across different districts and counties, with about an hour’s drive between Tiantai, Linhai, and Xianju. If it’s your first time and you just rush to the popular spots, you’ll easily waste all your time on the road. This time, a local friend from Taizhou showed me around. We planned a 3-day, 2-night route covering Tiantai, Linhai, and Xianju. We explored ancient temples, waterfalls, old towns, and unique peaks without backtracking. We experienced the culture, food, and scenery fully. Sharing this directly with friends planning to visit Taizhou! 🙌 🚄 Check the route before you go It’s best to enter from Tiantaishan Station and return from Xianju Station or Xianju South Station. Check specific train times in advance on 12306. Driving is the most convenient and flexible for traveling between counties. If you don’t drive, you can still get around by bus or ride-hailing between counties. Avoid returning to Taizhou’s main urban area every day. According to the official Shenxianju website, Xianju Station is about an 18-minute drive from the scenic area, and Xianju South Station is about 30 minutes away. Itinerary order: Day 1: Guoqing Temple — lunch in Tiantai county town — Tiantai Mountain waterfall Day 2: Donghu Lake — Taizhou city wall — Ziyang Street — head to Xianju Day 3: Shenxianju — return from Xianju Station 🌿 Day 1: Experience tranquility and awe in Tiantai First stop is Guoqing Temple. There’s no heavy commercial vibe here. Ancient trees, yellow walls, rice fields, and the Sui dynasty pagoda combine to create a healing atmosphere just by wandering around. Guoqing Temple is the ancestral temple of the Tiantai sect. Local government info says the Guoqing scenic area no longer charges admission, but actual opening arrangements depend on the daily announcement. For lunch, head to Tiantai county town. Try dumpling pancakes, flat wontons, hulatai, and wheat cakes. No need to chase trendy spots; local small shops popular with residents are usually great. In the afternoon, visit the Tiantai Mountain waterfall. It’s not a small waterfall you just glance at from afar but a tiered waterfall group you can hike up along the canyon boardwalk, with a total drop of 325 meters. We found it spectacular halfway up, with mist all around, especially refreshing in summer. The official website currently lists opening hours as 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. It’s best to arrive by 2:00 PM at the latest. Hours and ticketing may change, so check official info before you go. Stay overnight in Tiantai county town. After dinner, rest early for the next day. 🏯 Day 2: Linhai old town is the ultimate food and sightseeing spot On day two, go to Linhai. Start at Donghu Lake, then climb the Taizhou city wall from Lansheng Gate. The wall is built along the mountain, offering views of the old town, Donghu Lake, and Linhai city. The Taizhou city cultural tourism area is a national 5A scenic spot, with the core including the city wall, Ziyang Street, and Donghu Lake. If your stamina is average, don’t try to cover the whole wall. I recommend: Photo at Donghu Lake — climb the wall at Lansheng Gate — walk the best section of the wall — descend at Xingshan Gate — explore and eat on Ziyang Street Save room for Ziyang Street! Seaweed pancakes, wheat shrimp, egg white lamb tail, black rice mochi, pickled shrimp, and big noodle soup are all worth trying. Wheat shrimp isn’t actually shrimp but thick noodles made by dropping batter into soup. Freshly baked seaweed pancakes are savory and crispy. My advice is to buy one of each to share, or you’ll be full after the first two and just watch the rest sadly 😂. You can stay near Ziyang Street to enjoy the night scene. To make day three easier, consider heading straight to Xianju county town for dinner and lodging. ⛰️ Day 3: Shenxianju really feels like stepping into a fantasy world Try to arrive at Shenxianju right when it opens. On sunny days, you can see layer upon layer of unique peaks. After rain, you’re more likely to see a sea of clouds. Both weather types have their own charm. For an easy route, follow this exactly: Enter from the south gate — take the Nantian cable car up — Nantian peak — Buddha shadow lotus charm — Peach garden — Ruyi Bridge — take the Beihai cable car down — exit from the north gate The official Shenxianju guide also recommends taking the cable car up from the south gate and down from Beihai. This route has less uphill walking. Usually, you’ll still need 3–4 hours to explore even with cable cars. The mountain-top boardwalk looks thrilling but has good safety measures. If you’re afraid of heights, don’t keep looking down; stay close to the mountain side. The official info currently lists summer hours as 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM and winter hours as 7:30 AM to 5:00 PM. Special weather and holidays may cause temporary changes. 🏨 Where to stay In Tiantai, stay in the county town or near Guoqing Temple for easy dining and taxis. In Linhai, stay near Ziyang Street if you want to enjoy the night scene. For Shenxianju, it’s best to stay in Xianju county town or near the scenic area visitor center. This route doesn’t recommend staying in the same hotel for all three nights. It might seem easier to avoid moving luggage, but daily round trips are more tiring. 🍜 Must-eat in Taizhou Besides Linhai snacks, try ginger soup noodles, food pancakes, embedded cakes, pickled shrimp, and the eight big dishes of Xianju. Taizhou cuisine is known for being fresh and tender, with mountain flavors as well as seafood and rice and noodle snacks. ⚠️ Practical tips and pitfalls to avoid Taizhou’s attractions are really spread out. Don’t try to squeeze Shenxianju, Wenling Shitang, Dacheng Island, and Tiantai Mountain into three days. Always wear non-slip sports shoes for hiking. It’s windy at Shenxianju’s summit, so bring a light jacket. Check if attractions are open on rainy days. Buy tickets and cable car passes in advance for busy holidays. Buy small amounts of snacks at the old town and don’t get full at the first shop. Taizhou isn’t a city you can see all at once. It has the quiet of temples, the lively atmosphere of old towns, and the soaring peaks of Shenxianju. Follow this route for a full but relaxed trip. Just follow it on your first visit! ✨

It's just an hour and a half by high-speed train from Hangzhou, super convenient. This summer, you must take your kids to Taizhou at least once. 🏯 Linhai Ancient City, a Living Millennium Ancient City Linhai is perfect for kids; the whole ancient city is alive, not overly commercialized, and locals still live there, full of authentic life atmosphere. First, visit Ziyang Ancient Street, which is free. It’s a famous historical and cultural street in China, with buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties, very atmospheric. There are many snacks on the street; seaweed cakes are 10 yuan for five, fresh out of the oven and very fragrant. The kids ate three in one go. Egg White Lamb Tail is 15 yuan per serving, a Taizhou specialty, crispy outside and tender inside, sweet but not greasy, kids love it. Then go to the Jiangnan Great Wall, ticket 65 yuan. This is an ancient city wall from the Ming dynasty, even older than the Great Wall in Beijing. Climb a section with the kids to feel the history. It’s recommended to start from Lansheng Gate and walk down to Xingshan Gate; this route has the best scenery and isn’t too tiring. There are many enemy platforms on the wall where kids can play hide and seek, having a great time. Don’t miss Donghu Lake, ticket 15 yuan, right next to the Jiangnan Great Wall. The kids were very excited to see the colorful houses and wanted photos with every color. The village has many trendy photo spots; every shot looks like a movie scene. Then go to the Couple Rings Viewing Platform, free, accessible by car. From the platform, you can overlook the entire Shitang Peninsula, with blue sea and red roofs, very beautiful. The vegetarian meals at the temple are famous, 5 yuan per person, filling and delicious, a must-try. Qiongtai Fairy Valley ticket is 65 yuan. It’s a gorge with crystal-clear streams. The kids had a great time splashing in the water. Walking along the valley, you’ll see waterfalls and streams all the way, very refreshing and perfect for summer. We gained three pounds in four days with the kids. Second is egg white lamb tail, a Taizhou specialty, 15 yuan per serving, made with egg white, crispy outside and tender inside, filled with red bean paste, sweet but not greasy, kids especially like it. Third is Qiangao, 10 yuan each, rice cake wrapped with various vegetables, very large and filling, tastes great. Fourth is ginger soup noodles, 20 yuan per bowl, made with ginger soup, very fresh, with shrimp, clams, and mushrooms, nutritious and perfect for kids. Fifth is Sanmen green crab, now is the season for green crabs. The meat is very plump, and the roe is abundant.
