Sozankyo

Nestled in the land of volcanoes, I was gently embraced by hot springs and local charm. Staying at Aso Uchinomaki Onsen Sozankyo was a journey where every detail was thoughtfully considered. The wooden interiors harmonized with the mountain views outside, and the warm waters of the onsen slowly revitalized my body and soul, returning me to this land born of volcanoes. The dinner was a refined conversation with the local culture. The 'Akaushi' (red beef) dishes were meticulously presented, complemented by seasonal ingredients and beautiful tableware. Each dish was a testament to time and the artisan's dedication. The flavors were subtle yet built up in layers, leaving a deep and lasting impression. A visit to Kamishikimi Kumanoza Shrine was like stepping into a poem, with light filtering through stone lanterns and the trees, creating a serene atmosphere. The vastness and wind at Kusasenri-ga-hama made me feel the essence of freedom, while the white smoke billowing from the Aso crater was the earth's most authentic breath. This wasn't just a trip; it was an experience meticulously crafted by nature and hospitality, allowing me to return to my purest, most radiant self.

The hotel has a Japanese garden at the entrance, and even before stepping inside, you're enveloped in a strong hot spring town atmosphere. Parking is free and located across from the hotel. The staff are incredibly friendly and polite, greeting guests at the door upon arrival and departure. After checking in, a staff member patiently explained the hotel's facilities and presented us with a towel and a rich cup of matcha, which felt very ceremonial. The large public bath is on the top floor, with both indoor and outdoor sections. The spring water is a bit dark and has a slight iron-like scent.

This onsen ryokan, right in the heart of Uchinomaki Onsen town, gets a perfect score from us! We encountered incredibly thoughtful staff and a warm taxi driver. Knowing we had to catch the JR train the next day, the front desk auntie went above and beyond to help us arrange a taxi, even standing outside anxiously waiting with us. Once the taxi arrived, she repeatedly urged the driver to speed up. The driver, a kind grandpa, even used a translator on the way to constantly reassure us that we would make it in time, and expressed his longing to visit China. This was truly the highlight of our trip. As for the hotel itself, it's a well-established ryokan. The rooms are beautiful and spacious, each featuring an indoor onsen with direct, free-flowing hot spring water that leaves your skin feeling incredibly smooth. We loved the large, traditional Japanese-style decor. There are also two private onsen that require advance booking, as well as a large public onsen. We later discovered it was even a filming location for a racing manga! Additionally, there's an outdoor foot bath. Dining was a delightful surprise. We enjoyed Wagyu shabu-shabu, and the children's meal even included Wagyu yakiniku. Breakfast offered the famous local Mizunashi chicken dish, which completely won over my taste buds. On the first floor, there's also a preserved, old-fashioned Japanese-style reception room in the lobby, made with high-quality wood, which guests can visit.

My room this time came with a private onsen, and the hotel environment was excellent, making me feel very relaxed. Additionally, the hotel has a large public onsen, and you can also book a 40-minute private bath. Overall, I was very satisfied with the experience.

Located in Aso Onsenkyo, this hotel offers a one-night stay with two meals and a private open-air bath. Enjoy a drink at the rooftop bar in the evening for a unique experience. The staff provide excellent service. I'll definitely be back!
