Twenty years ago, the main gate of the Longmen Grottoes was directly accessible. Now, it takes at least 30 minutes to walk from the underground parking lot, through the commercial street, and along a winding path to the ticket gate. That's how scenic spots are these days. Luckily, it rained that afternoon, making it much cooler, otherwise I would have been exhausted before even reaching the highlights. Picture 1 shows the main gate from 20 years ago; be prepared to walk long distances if you want to see it! However, the night view is still exquisite! The lights turn on promptly at 7 pm. Just wait inside the scenic area. If you want close-up photos, wait at the foot of the Vairocana Buddha, or you can take photos from the other side of the bridge, but once you cross, you can't walk back.
