Just walking around, you can feel the slow, relaxed atmosphere of this small city. But after really experiencing the whole trip, I just want to say: no matter how rich the heritage is, it's just too much of an ordeal. I'm not trying to smear the city! This is just a raw, unfiltered experience from an average tourist. I've been here once and honestly don't want to come back a second time. The whole trip was exhausting, full of pitfalls, and average travelers will definitely be disappointed if they just rush in blindly! First, the biggest deterrent is Baoding's weather! Anyone who has been here knows the brutal temperature difference between day and night. In spring, summer, and early autumn, the sun is incredibly intense during the day. When the sun is beating down, it's unbearably hot, and there isn't much shade, so the wind feels dry and hot. Temperatures drop quickly in the morning and evening; you wear short sleeves during the day but need a jacket by evening, making it easy to catch a cold from the temperature swings. Most of the sightseeing in the ancient city involves outdoor walking, and you'll feel parched and exhausted after just a few steps. Occasionally, there are sudden strong winds that kick up dust. On sunny days, the UV rays are extremely strong, and if your sun protection isn't perfect, you'll get sunburned. If you're sensitive to the sun or have a delicate constitution, please think twice before coming! Then there's the huge gap between the "influencer" attractions and reality—they are total "photo traps"! I was super excited about West Street and the Ancient Lotus Pond after reading guides, thinking they would be authentic old Baoding, but I was deeply disappointed after visiting. The entire West Street is heavily commercialized. There aren't many local old shops; most are just the same generic influencer snacks and souvenir stalls you see everywhere else in the country. The local flavor is very weak. A major tip: avoid the scattered street food stalls! Many snacks look cheap, costing just a few yuan, but the portions are tiny. You can easily spend dozens of yuan buying just a few items—they are designed to rip off tourists. Also, the small shops selling trinkets, sour jujubes, and local specialties have high markups and mixed quality. Don't make impulsive purchases. The Zhili Governor's Office is also a total waste of money. The queue for the cable car up the mountain often takes over 1 hour, and there are many stairs on the mountain paths. The whole climb is very physically demanding, making it difficult for the elderly and children. You have to wait in line for many of the good viewing spots; there's absolutely no sense of relaxation while looking at the mountains. The most frustrating part is the endless queuing and the hassle of making reservations. Most of Baoding's popular cultural and museum attractions require advance booking. The Zhili Governor's Office, Ancient Lotus Pond, and museums are often fully booked. If you don't snag a reservation in advance, there's a high chance you'll make the trip for nothing. The queues for food are even worse! If you want to eat at an authentic old shop for donkey meat sandwiches or beef soup with pancakes, you'll be waiting for at least 1 hour during meal times, and the shops are noisy and crowded. The key is that after waiting so long, the taste isn't much different from the inconspicuous shops in residential areas—it's very poor value. The quotes for chartering a car fluctuate wildly, making it easy to get overcharged, and your itinerary can easily be ruined. There's one more very real feeling: Baoding is too suitable for living, but not for tourism. Locals stroll slowly through the morning markets, eat sandwiches, and wander around the old streets—it's relaxed and healing. But when tourists come, they can only rush through their itinerary, squeeze through crowds, wait in lines, and try to avoid traps. The whole city has no relaxing entertainment projects; the ancient city and mountains all rely on walking and climbing, and 20,000 steps a day is the norm. The roads in the ancient city are complex and winding, making it easy to get lost. Walking is hot and tiring, and by the end of the day, your legs are sore, and you're physically and mentally exhausted. To give a sincere and objective summary: Baoding's ancient city heritage, everyday snacks, and mountain scenery are truly unique. Visiting once allows you to understand the depth and gentleness of this ancient city. But the unpredictable weather, "photo trap" influencer attractions, endless queues, hidden consumption traps, scattered itinerary, and inconvenient cross-regional transportation—every point drains the joy of travel. It's very suitable for friends who like history, love eating local snacks, and want to live slowly and relax. But for ordinary short-term tourists, those who are afraid of the sun and getting tired, those who pursue a relaxed and comfortable trip, and those who want to check off many attractions in a short time, I really don't recommend coming again!
