Honestly, before coming to Sichuan, my expectations for Huanglong weren't sky-high, but standing by the Five-Color Pond, I was truly blown away. What makes this place special isn't just the scenery, but the layered calcified pools. When the sunlight hits them, the water displays various colors like blue-green, light yellow, and cyan, looking like gems hidden within the mountains. I personally recommend entering the scenic area in the morning when the light is clearer and it's relatively less crowded. The wooden boardwalk from the entrance is well-maintained, but given the high altitude, be sure to pace yourself and avoid rushing at the start. You can enjoy the pools and take photos along the way. When you reach a higher vantage point and look back, you'll see the pools spreading out along the valley in beautiful, layered formations. There are 3 main highlights: 1. The Five-Color Pond, where I suggest leaving enough time to take it all in; 2. The Zhengyan Pond, which features dense pools with rich color variations; 3. The wooden boardwalk itself, which offers the feeling of "walking through a painting" as you traverse between the forests and the pools. I've personally tested these photo spots and they are the best: 1. The Five-Color Pond viewing platform, perfect for capturing pools + snow-capped mountains + silhouette; 2. The curves of the wooden boardwalk, which create a sense of depth as the pools extend layer by layer; 3. The halfway vantage point, ideal for tourist shots and wide-angle group photos. I recommend wearing light-colored, white, or red clothing, as these colors stand out beautifully against the pools. Here are some tips to avoid common pitfalls: Huanglong is at a high altitude, so avoid strenuous exercise. It's better to be well-rested beforehand than to rely on an oxygen bottle. There's a significant temperature difference in the scenic area, so bring a light jacket even in summer. Be sure to pack sunscreen and sunglasses, as the UV rays on the plateau are very strong. Do not step into the calcified pools or cross the railings for photos; it's dangerous and damages the landscape. During peak season, I recommend arriving early to avoid both the crowds and the harsh midday light. Overall, Huanglong is a place to explore at a leisurely pace, not to rush through. If you have enough time, I recommend dedicating 1 full day to it. Save your energy for the highlights, and you'll have a much better experience and get better photos.

Give yourself time to notice both. 💎 1. Take in the layers at Five-Colour Pool Five-Colour Pool (五彩池) is a whole cluster of pools, with curved mineral rims dividing the water into smaller shapes. Start with the wider view, then look closer: pale blue beside deep green, reflections across the surface, and delicate edges connecting one pool to the next. Different viewpoints reveal different patterns, so keep exploring the designated viewing areas. ✨ 2. Look beyond the blue water The golden formations are travertine, built by calcium carbonate deposited from flowing water. At Golden Sand Ground (金沙铺地), the landscape opens into a broad sweep of yellow-gold mineral deposits. It offers a different view from the enclosed pools: follow the textures and the way the formation stretches down the valley. Water levels change with the seasons, and some lower pools can be much drier in winter and spring. Don’t expect every terrace to match a summer photograph. 🏔️ 3. Huanglong, which means "Yellow Dragon," is one of the most beautiful natural attractions in Sichuan Province, China. During my one-day trip there, I was deeply impressed by its breathtaking scenery, crystal-clear pools, and peaceful mountain environment. The experience was both exciting and unforgettable. As soon as I arrived at Huanglong Scenic Area, I was amazed by the stunning landscape. The area is famous for its colorful travertine pools that stretch along the mountain valley like a golden dragon. The water in the pools appeared in different shades of blue, green, yellow, and turquoise, creating a magical and dreamlike view. It felt as if I had stepped into a fairy tale.

Tickets cost 170 RMB and the cable car is 80 RMB, even though the ride lasts less than five minutes. To reach the main attractions, you still have to travel another four kilometers, which requires a 15 RMB sightseeing bus ride, bringing the total to about 265 RMB. Plus, you have to hike all the way down if you want to see all the sights. Personally, I don't think it's great value for money. While the Multi-Colored Pond is stunning, I don't think it's worth shelling out two or three hundred RMB. I'd recommend heading straight to Jiuzhaigou instead; Huanglong is better suited for travelers who have plenty of time, money, and stamina.

Huanglong was glowing in full autumn splendor just a week before our visit — golden forests and turquoise pools in perfect harmony. By the time we arrived on 29 October 2025, the snow had come early, wrapping the valley in a calm, silvery silence.

#overratedspots I don't think the Five-Color Ponds are overrated because they're not beautiful—they absolutely are. I just think many people focus so much on that one iconic spot that they forget Huanglong is much more than a single viewpoint. If I could visit again, I'd spend less time chasing the most famous photo and more time appreciating everything in between. Sometimes the places that aren't trending online end up becoming the memories you treasure the most. For me, Huanglong wasn't about checking off one famous attraction. It was about slowing down and discovering that the journey through the valley was every bit as rewarding as the destination itself.

But the real planning issue is not only the view. It is altitude, walking pace, weather and timing. This is a place where trying to rush can make the trip feel harder than it needs to be. My ExploreWithJC planning rule: do not plan Huanglong like a quick photo stop. The terraced pools are formed by natural mineral deposits, which is why the edges and colours look so unusual. But the route is still a mountain-valley visit, not a simple flat lakeside walk. For a first visit, I would prioritise: 1. Start earlier than you think 2. Keep the route simple 3. Allow time for altitude adjustment 4. Check weather before travelling 5. Do not overpack the same day Who should go: travellers who love clear water, mountain scenery, natural formations and slower scenic walks. Who may want to skip: travellers who dislike altitude, long walking routes, sudden weather changes or high-effort nature days. Before booking, recheck current transport, opening status, ticket rules and seasonal access. These details can change, especially in mountain destinations. Save this if Sichuan is on your China plan. The White Water Terraces are honestly such a sweet spot to explore! If you’re in Shangri-La or road-tripping from Lijiang, you’ve gotta add this place to your day trip list. We made it our first stop, and trust me, it was the ultimate morning vibe. Let’s get into the basics: The White Water Terraces (Baishuitai) are located in Baidi Village, Sanba Township, Shangri-La County, Yunnan, China. They usually open from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm (double-check on trip.com for ticket times and prices). Heads up—there are A LOT of steps (get ready to test those glutes!), and because you’re up at a high altitude, it’s best to go easy and take breaks whenever you need. Altitude level: no joke! We were lucky because there weren’t too many tourists around, so crowd control = A+. BUT you might meet the “horse people” at the entrance pushing for rides. They’ll keep offering, but a simple, friendly “no thanks” does the trick. Keep your chill and keep walking—you’ve got some seriously epic scenery ahead. The terraces start as these earthy yellow-brown colors and, as you climb higher (slow and steady, friends!), they turn more and more pure white. At the very top, the water looks like melted sapphires—shades of blue that hit different against the white terraces. It honestly gives major mini-Huanglong (in Sichuan) energy, just on a cozier scale.
