1. The founder of Zen Buddhism
The Shaolin Temple is a sacred Buddhist site in China and the ancestral temple of Chan Buddhism. In 527 AD, the renowned Indian monk Bodhidharma (known as the founder of Zen) traveled by sea to southern China, crossed the Yangtze River northward into the Central Plains, and arrived at Shaolin. He meditated and taught dharma in the mountains behind the Shaolin Temple, first advocating the Chan teaching of "mind-to-mind transmission," thereby establishing the temple's revered status as the ancestral home of Chan Buddhism.
Nowadays, many visitors come to Shaolin Temple to pray for blessings and peace.

The Shaolin Temple complex mainly consists of three parts: the Changzhu Yuan Pagoda Forest, the Chuzu Nunnery, and the Songshan Shaolin attraction - Damo Cave. Most visitors traveling to Shaolin Temple from Luoyang or Zhengzhou choose this route.
The layout of Shaolin Temple is typical of Han Chinese Buddhist temples, featuring central axis symmetry. After entering the mountain gate, you can walk straight ahead. The temple is not large, and the visit can be completed within an hour.
The Shaolin Temple scenic area - pagoda forest is located approx. 400 m west of Shaolin Temple, serving as the burial ground for the temple's eminent monks throughout history. As the Buddhist saying goes: "Saving one life is better than building a seven-story pagoda." Here, you can learn about the life stories of Shaolin Temple's eminent monks across different dynasties.
The Chuzu Temple and Songshan Shaolin attraction - Damo Cave are also near the Shaolin Temple, accessible by walking. The Chuzu Temple was built by people of the Song Dynasty to commemorate Bodhidharma's wall-gazing meditation, while the Songshan Shaolin attraction - Damo Cave is the very place where Patriarch Bodhidharma meditated facing a wall for nine years.

Shaolin story
The most stubborn holdout in history:
When it comes to stubborn holdouts, they didn't just appear in modern times. As early as the Tang dynasty, the Shaolin Temple emerged as such a case. Emperor Li Yuan of Tang issued an order for its demolition but failed. When Li Shimin came to power, not only was the Shaolin Temple spared from punishment, but it also received generous rewards. Compared to today's holdouts, the Shaolin Temple can be called the most legendary stubborn holdout in history.
The origin of the matter was an imperial edict issued by Li Yuan, ordering the demolition of all temples within Henan province, including the Shaolin Temple.
After receiving the imperial decree, hundreds of monks at Shaolin Temple refused to comply, standing united and resolute in collective defiance. Li Yuan had no choice, as the Tang dynasty was newly established and could not afford to gain a reputation for cruelty. He tacitly allowed the temple's "retention" but revoked the 4,000 acres of temple land previously granted by the Prince of Qin.
Later, when Li Shimin became emperor, he granted Shaolin Temple an additional 4,000 mu of land, permitted the temple to train monk soldiers, lift the prohibition against killing, and consume alcohol and meat.
Inside the temple, there is a stele titled "Emperor Taizong of Tang's decree to the Shaolin Temple abbot," which records this historical event. You may want to see it when visiting the Shaolin Temple.

Songshan Shaolin Scenic Area Photos: Trip Moments
Spend 2 days at Shaolin Temple with an 80 yuan all-access ticket; after the Pagoda Forest, the Sanhuangzhai plank road deserves half a dayThe crowds at the Shaolin Temple gate almost all surge toward the main hall; that day, however, I turned into a side courtyard to stand for a while, and later spent a long time in the Pagoda Forest. Shaolin is located on the northern slope of Shaoshi Mountain in Dengfeng, Zhengzhou. One ticket covers the Main Monastery, Pagoda Forest, Sanhuangzhai, Chuzu Temple, and Bodhidharma Cave, connecting the mountain, temple, and martial arts into a single route for a complete experience. Below, I will cover how to book tickets, how to get there, accommodation and dining tips, and why it is called the unity of Zen and martial arts. Before you go: Tickets and timing The Shaolin Temple Scenic Area (Songshan Shaolin Scenic Area) is in Dengfeng City, Zhengzhou. The adult all-access ticket is 80 yuan and includes the Shaolin Temple Main Monastery, Pagoda Forest, martial arts performances, Sanhuangzhai, Chuzu Temple, etc. Please refer to official sources for what is included in different ticket types. Students get half-price tickets for 40 yuan. Young children and seniors over 60 are eligible for free admission according to policy; remember to bring the original identification documents. You need to book tickets in advance, usually 2 to 7 days ahead, via the "Songshan Tourism" WeChat official account or the "Manyou Songshan" mini-program. Private vehicles cannot drive to the temple gate; you must transfer to the scenic area shuttle bus at the visitor center, which can be confusing for first-time visitors. Opening hours are roughly 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with last entry around 4:30 PM. To avoid tour groups, getting an early start is key. Main Monastery and Pagoda Forest: Scenery at every step Entering the gate, the central axis leads through seven courtyards, with the Hall of Heavenly Kings, Mahavira Hall, and Sutra Library lined up in sequence. Incense smoke and tourists mix together; while it is lively, you should still slow down to appreciate the details—the ancient steles, the stone lions in front of the halls, and the inscriptions under the eaves all hold stories. That day, I did not follow the crowd into the main hall; instead, I stood in a side courtyard for a while. The gray tiles on the eaves were washed bright by the rain, and it was quiet enough to hear the wind. Walking west to the Pagoda Forest, the atmosphere became even quieter. This is a cemetery of pagoda tombs for high monks through the ages. The brick and stone pagodas vary in shape and height, looking especially beautiful in the morning mist or sunset, and are one of the symbols of Shaolin. I stood in the Pagoda Forest for a long time, feeling that a large part of Shaolin's weight rests on these silent pagodas. There are different accounts regarding the number and style of the pagodas, but the on-site information boards are quite detailed, so just follow them. If you encounter inscriptions or pagoda names you do not understand, take a photo and look them up later; it is more memorable than just glancing at them. Sanhuangzhai: Putting martial arts back into the mountains If you have enough time, I highly recommend setting aside half a day for Sanhuangzhai. It is located on Shaoshi Mountain. The plank road carved along the mountain winds along the cliffs, with deep valleys beneath your feet and layered mountains in the distance. It is a hike that offers both scenery and a workout, but it is worth it. The cable car can save you most of the climb; a round trip is about 100 yuan, but please check on-site for current pricing. Save your energy for the plank road, and you will understand why Shaolin martial arts grew in these mountains—it is not without reason. Looking back halfway up, the path you traveled looks like a faint scratch hanging on the cliff wall. At that moment, your legs may be sore, but your heart will feel open. Some sections of the plank road are narrow; if you are afraid of heights, know your limits and do not push yourself. Zen and martial arts: Two ways of life on one mountain Shaolin Temple was founded in the 19th year of the Taihe era of the Northern Wei Dynasty, 495 AD. It was built by Emperor Xiaowen to accommodate the Indian monk Buddhabhadra and was named Shaolin because it is located in the dense forests of Shaoshi Mountain. Later, Bodhidharma meditated and taught Zen here, making Shaolin the ancestral home of Chinese Buddhist Zen. The monks practiced martial arts to protect the temple and strengthen their bodies, which also made it the birthplace of Shaolin martial arts. Zen and martial arts have never been separate things at Shaolin; one emphasizes stillness, the other movement. Together, they form the concept of the unity of Zen and martial arts. Watch a martial arts performance, then walk the mountain plank road, and this meaning will naturally emerge. Performances, accommodation, and a few reminders Martial arts performances have fixed showtimes. To get a clear view, arrive 20 minutes early to secure a seat in the middle-front section. In case of extreme weather, performances may be canceled temporarily. For accommodation, there are many options in downtown Dengfeng with good value. Homestays around the temple are closer, but book early. There are tourist shuttle buses from Dengfeng to Zhengzhou and Luoyang. You can take a high-speed train to Zhengzhou Station or Dengfeng Station and then transfer. There are many stairs throughout the day, so wear non-slip sneakers and bring a sun hat. Some small stalls only accept cash, so keep some change handy. The Arhat Hall and the monk living quarters are usually not open to the public, so do not go looking for them specifically.GEORGE ROSS2

SHAOLIN IN THE RAIN ☔ — WHERE ANCIENT WISDOM MEETS MISTY MOUNTAINS AND THE SPIRIT OF KUNG FU 🌧️What if the most powerful travel experience isn't about chasing spectacular views, but discovering a place where silence, rain and centuries of wisdom teach you to slow down? ✨ Forget the postcard of brilliant sunshine over China's sacred mountains. Imagine ancient temple roofs glistening beneath the drizzle, incense curling through misty courtyards, and towering pine trees swaying gently above stone steps worn smooth by generations of pilgrims. Welcome to Shaolin Temple, nestled among the dramatic Songshan Mountains in Henan province, a place renowned for its Buddhist heritage, legendary martial arts traditions and enduring connection to Zen philosophy. Here, rain seems to deepen the atmosphere. Water trickles from curved roof tiles. Stone courtyards shine beneath the grey sky. Beyond the temple walls, mountain paths disappear into drifting mist, creating scenery that feels straight out of a traditional Chinese ink painting. In Shaolin, even a rainy day can become a lesson in patience, balance and finding beauty in the present moment. 🍃 ☔ FIVE WAYS TO EXPERIENCE SHAOLIN IN THE RAIN 1. 🛕 Discover Shaolin Temple. Explore the historic Buddhist complex, with its traditional halls, courtyards and centuries of spiritual history. Rain brings out the rich colours of the architecture, creating wonderful photographic opportunities. Dress respectfully and check opening arrangements before visiting. 2. 🥋 Experience the Shaolin martial arts tradition. Learn about the famous kung fu heritage associated with the temple through available demonstrations or cultural performances. Indoor shows can be a useful option when the weather turns wet, but check schedules and ticket availability in advance. 3. 🌿 Explore the Pagoda Forest. Discover this remarkable collection of stone and brick pagodas, built over centuries to honour important Buddhist monks. Their varied shapes and weathered surfaces create an atmospheric setting beneath cloudy skies. Take care on slippery paths. 4. 🏔️ Admire the Songshan Mountains. When conditions allow, enjoy the surrounding mountain scenery, where mist drifts between forested slopes and rocky outcrops. Rain can make the landscape feel wonderfully mysterious, but avoid exposed trails during storms or heavy downpours. 5. 🍵 Embrace a moment of quiet reflection. Find a peaceful sheltered spot, enjoy a cup of Chinese tea and listen to the rain falling around the temple grounds. Sometimes, the simplest moments offer the deepest connection to a destination. 🌧️ A PRACTICAL SHAOLIN TIP Bring a waterproof jacket and shoes with reliable grip. Mountain weather can change quickly, and rain makes stone steps and trails slippery. Check weather alerts, transport arrangements and attraction access before setting out. Shaolin reminds us that travel isn't always about ticking off landmarks or chasing perfect weather. Sometimes, the most meaningful journeys invite us to pause, breathe and appreciate the beauty of the moment. ❤️ Wous7an Atlas1

Songshan Shaolin Temple | A two-day, one-night kung fu pilgrimage—this cultural export gets my full score! As the birthplace of Chinese martial arts, Songshan Shaolin Temple is definitely the top must-visit spot in the country!👊 The core experience here is truly outstanding! 🔸 The Shaolin kung fu show is absolutely the soul of the visit! It’s great that no extra ticket is needed~ but ⚠️ note that the showtimes are fixed, so be sure to plan your schedule in advance. I saw many visitors rushing in just in time that day (yikes...) 🔸 The scenery in the Songshan area is beyond breathtaking! I highly recommend taking the cable car 🚡 up the mountain after visiting the temple, then walking to Sanhuang Village before heading back. The morning light is best, and every photo looks like a martial arts movie scene! [Travel tips] 1️⃣ Best time: strongly recommend visiting in the morning 2️⃣ Hidden gem: the cultural sites on the mountain are well preserved and completely free of over-commercialization 3️⃣ Avoid pitfalls: the park stops admitting visitors at 5 PM, so don’t arrive too late! Stayed in a Zen mountain view room at Shaoshi Mountain in Songshan. It was so healingAnyone who gets it, sisters!! I took a trip to Dengfeng in July. I originally just wanted to casually hike Songshan and check in, but I ended up completely overwhelmed by Shaoshi Mountain’s summer😭 ⸻ 🏠Where to stay ⛰️The guesthouse is on the west side of the Shaolin scenic area, toward Xuantian Temple Village. It backs Shaoshi Mountain and faces Taishi Mountain, with mountain views on both sides. The layered view when you open the window is amazing ⛰️A full wall of floor-to-ceiling windows faces the canyon. In the early morning, mist rises from the mountainside. Lying in bed watching the sea of clouds roll by is more healing than any alarm clock ⛰️The courtyard has an outdoor tea terrace and lounge chairs🍵 In the evening, when the mountain breeze blows and you hear the distant temple bells, you can completely relax ⸻ 🗓️Day 1 itinerary breakdown 📍Morning|Shaolin Temple + martial arts show Enter the park right at 7 AM!! During peak season from March to November, closing time is extended to 6 PM, but mornings are incredibly quiet, so you don’t have to dodge people when taking photos 🎫Tickets cost 80 yuan and include the permanent residence, pagoda forest, Sanhuang Village, and martial arts show—all accessible with one ticket Head straight to the martial arts hall for the show. There are two fixed daily performances at 10:30 AM and 3:30 PM. Arrive 20 minutes early to get front-row seats! I personally saw the monks’ fingers and hair strands flicking in the front row—it was amazing💥 After the show, follow the main path to tour the permanent residence. Walk through seven courtyards in order: Hall of Heavenly Kings, Mahavira Hall, Sutra Library… It’s best to hire a guide; otherwise, it’s just looking at buildings. With a guide, you’ll know which bricks are from the Tang dynasty and which pillars are from the Song dynasty ⸻ 📍Noon|Pagoda forest + lunch The pagoda forest is a five-minute walk west of the permanent residence. There are 246 ancient pagodas densely arranged. The aerial view is stunning📸 but photos from the ground are also great Lunch is outside the scenic area. Along Shaolin Street, there are many farmhouse restaurants. Huimian noodles and sesame braised noodles are worth trying. Expect to spend 30–40 yuan per person and leave full ⸻ 📍Afternoon|Sanhuang Village route (the highlight!) 🚡Take the Shaolin cable car from the pagoda forest up the mountain. Round-trip costs 100 yuan, student tickets 60 yuan round-trip. One way takes about 15 minutes From the cable car station, walk right for 10 minutes to Shuce Cliff!! The entire cliff looks like a giant open stone book, with textures so clear they seem unreal. In summer, sunlight makes it shine golden✨ If you have the energy, continue toward the suspension bridge. The cliffside plank road is built along the cliff wall, with a hundred-meter-deep valley below. It’s nerve-wracking but thrilling🫨 When you reach the suspension bridge, you can decide whether to continue to Sanhuang Village. The whole trip takes about another hour and a half ⚠️Bring enough water in summer when hiking Sanhuang Village! There are no supply points along the trail. It’s recommended to carry at least 1.5L. A sun hat and arm sleeves are also essential If you’re with elderly or children, you can return the same way from Shuce Cliff and take the cable car down. If you’re not in a hurry, sit by the cliff for a while. Opposite you is a continuous range of Danxia peaks, so quiet you can only hear the wind ⸻ 🌙Evening|Zen Shaolin music ceremony The 2026 edition marks the 20th anniversary of the show, fully upgraded with more refined stage lighting and choreography than before Summer shows start every night at 8:15 PM and end at 9:30 PM. The performance is held in Daixiangou Canyon, 7 km from Shaolin Temple 💺Tickets start at 239 yuan for B section, 279 yuan for A section. For families, A section offers a perfectly good view. Sitting on meditation cushions in the valley creates an immersive experience that honestly beats any theater More than 2,800 lights illuminate the entire valley. Martial monks perform acrobatics over the stream. When the moon rises behind the mountain, you get goosebumps all over ⸻ 📌Practical tips 🔹Driving from Zhengzhou via Zhengshao Expressway takes about 1 hour 15 minutes. Parking costs 15 yuan per visit. Search for Jialandian official parking lot on navigation. Don’t park at the first lot—keep going to the second one, which is closer 🔹If you don’t want to drive, there are direct buses from Zhengzhou Coach Center to Dengfeng for about 28 yuan. From Dengfeng, a taxi to Shaolin scenic area costs about 30 yuan one way 🔹The entrance gate to Shaolin Temple is 2 km from the scenic area ticket checkpoint. Sightseeing buses cost 25 yuan round-trip or 15 yuan one way. It’s recommended to buy round-trip tickets. Walking takes half an hour and wastes energy 🔹July daytime temperatures in Dengfeng can reach 35–36°C, but mountain temperatures feel 5–6 degrees cooler, especially with strong winds after taking the cable car. Bringing a light jacket is worthwhile 🔹Cell signal is generally weak throughout. There is often no signal on the Sanhuang Village trail. Download offline maps in advance ⸻ Honestly, summer at Shaoshi Mountain exceeded all expectations. It’s not as crowded as those popular mountains. The visitor density is just right, combining the weight of a thousand-year-old temple with the pure outdoor thrill of Sanhuang Village. Ending the day with a valley live show leaves your body and mind completely refreshed🧘♀️JAYCEON HOLT

Monks or a Spectacle? The Truth About Shaolin Monastery 🏯Shaolin Monastery is arguably China’s most iconic landmark and the cradle of Shaolin Kung Fu. But it’s far more than just an "ancient temple from the movies." Today, Shaolin is a unique hybrid: a working Buddhist monastery, a sprawling tourist destination, a world-renowned martial arts hub, and a place that millions of visitors flock to every year. 📍 Location: Mount Songshan, Henan Province 🚄 Nearest major cities: Zhengzhou and Luoyang ⸻ 🏯 A Glimpse of History The monastery was founded over 1,500 years ago. Throughout its long history, Shaolin has been: · Repeatedly destroyed · Burned during various wars · Rebuilt from the ashes The most devastating destruction occurred in 1928, when a massive fire wiped out most of the historic buildings and ancient manuscripts. The modern complex you see today is largely a reconstruction, yet the spiritual energy of the site still feels incredibly powerful. ⸻ 🥋 Shaolin Today: What to Expect To be honest, this is no longer a "quiet mountain retreat." Surrounding the complex, you’ll find: · Countless Kung Fu schools · Thousands of students training · Large-scale tourist shows · Open-air practice sessions · Bustling souvenir streets · Massive crowds of tourists This leads many to ask: Is it still a monastery, or has it become a show? In reality, it is both at the same time. ⸻ ✨ Top Highlights 🏮 Main Temple Complex Red walls, ancient courtyards, Buddhist pavilions, and centuries-old trees. 🥋 Kung Fu Performance The most popular part of any visit. The performances are truly breathtaking: featuring acrobatics, perfectly synchronized drills, and incredible displays of strength, flexibility, and traditional weaponry. 🌲 Pagoda Forest A UNESCO World Heritage site, this is the ancient burial ground for the monastery’s monks. It is one of the most atmospheric parts of the entire complex. ⸻ ⛰️ Cable Cars and Mountain Trails Many visitors don't realize that Shaolin is surrounded by stunning mountain routes. The most popular trail leads to the Sanhuang Village area. From there, you’ll find: · Spectacular views of the Songshan Mountains · Suspension bridges · Cliffside paths · Glass walkway sections You can take a cable car up and hike down, or vice versa. 💡 If you aren't up for a long climb, the cable car is a major energy saver. ⸻ 🚌 Getting Around the Complex The territory is vast, and walking everywhere can be exhausting. There are paid shuttle buses that run between: · The main entrance · The monastery · The Pagoda Forest · The cable car stations This is highly recommended, especially during the summer heat or peak tourist season. ⸻ 🎫 Costs and Opening Hours 🕒 General Opening Hours: Approximately 08:00 to 17:00–18:00 (varies by season) 🎫 Entrance Ticket: Around 80 RMB (may be higher during peak season) 🚡 Cable cars require separate tickets. Pro Tip: Arrive early in the morning to beat the massive crowds. ⸻ 🚄 How to Get There The most convenient route is to take a flight or high-speed train to Zhengzhou or Luoyang. From there: 1️⃣ Take a bus, shuttle, or taxi to Dengfeng. 2️⃣ From Dengfeng: Take a local shuttle or taxi directly to the monastery. The trip from Zhengzhou takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. While a taxi can be pricey (around 200 RMB), it is a major time-saver. ⸻ ⚠️ Essential Tips · Expect huge crowds on weekends. · The complex is massive, so wear comfortable shoes. · It can get extremely hot in the summer. · Kung Fu shows run on a schedule; try to arrive early to get a seat. · Cable cars may close during bad weather. ⸻ 🤔 Is It Worth the Trip? If you go expecting a completely authentic, "secret monastery" with no tourists, you might be disappointed. However, if you view Shaolin as a fascinating blend of: · History · Buddhism · Martial Arts · Chinese pop culture · And a grand-scale spectacle ...then the experience is truly unique. And yes—seeing the thousands of students training at the Shaolin schools in person is still an awe-inspiring sight.Maria Akkuzhina9
Hiking Songshan to see the red leaves: A photo recap📷 All photos were taken during our Oct 18–19 hike from Wuru Peak to Shaolin Temple 🙋 🍁 Songshan is a short drive from Zhengzhou—just over an hour—making it an ideal weekend destination for hiking and viewing red leaves. The red leaf season is short and fleeting, and we have now entered the peak viewing period 🤪 🍁 Songshan offers more than just red leaves; it features unique geological landscapes like the "Book Cliff" and sedimentary rock formations. 👉 Joining the Outdoor Detectives is not just about hiking for exercise; it's about connecting with interesting people and exploring not only beautiful scenery but also human geography and knowledge 🫰OliviaMcPheey
Experience Centuries of Zen and Martial Arts: Book Your Shaolin Temple Tickets on Trip.comI successfully booked my tickets for the Songshan Shaolin Scenic Area through Trip.com. Stepping into this ancient temple steeped in history, I truly felt the profound connection between Zen Buddhism and martial arts. The melodious sound of the temple bells echoing through the grounds felt like a journey back in time, bringing a sense of deep inner peace. At the same time, I experienced firsthand the legendary heritage of Shaolin, often called the "cradle of all martial arts." Watching the warrior monks perform was a highlight; their movements perfectly blend Zen philosophy with powerful martial arts. ⛩️ I recommend keeping an eye on the schedule for the ancient architecture tours and performances. Let the sound of the bells clear your mind as you soak in the Zen atmosphere and the unique charm of Shaolin Kung Fu. This trip was incredibly rewarding—a must-visit for anyone who loves traditional culture!_TX***cw

Show More ReviewsI really loved the presentación, and the walk to the Chuz temple is definitely worth it if you want to avoid the crowds of the main shaoling temple. And i recommend to be at least 20 min before the show starts to find a good spot
