based on 782 reviewsSongzanlin Scenic Spot is located on the hillside north of Shangri-La city, consisting of Ganden Sumtseling Monastery, Lamuyangcuo Lake, Naizi River Wetland, and Niwangzong Ancient Town. Its core is Ganden Sumtseling Monastery, known as the "Little Potala Palace." Built in 1679 and also called Guihua Temple, it is an important Gelugpa monastery in the Sichuan-Yunnan region. The entire temple complex is built against the mountain, facing south, with an elliptical outer wall, resembling an ancient fortress from afar. The two main halls, Tsatsang and Jikang, stand at the highest point of the monastery as five-story Tibetan-style structures with gilded copper roofs. Surrounding them are Khamtsen and monks' quarters, clustered in layers, further accentuating the grandeur of the two main halls.
The Tsatsang Hall is where monks study scriptures and delve into Buddhist teachings. The rear hall houses bronze statues of Tsongkhapa and Maitreya. The Jikang Hall enshrines a statue of Tsongkhapa, founder of the Gelug school, at its center, with murals of the Eight Medicine Buddhas adorning its walls. The temple also preserves precious artifacts such as a gilded Sakyamuni statue, palm-leaf manuscripts, exquisitely painted thangkas in gold and colors, golden lamps, and the "Tengyur" scriptures handwritten in gold ink—many of which are rarely displayed. Outside the living Buddha's scripture room on the third floor of the Tsatsang Hall hangs a remarkable photograph titled "Sun and moon shining together over Meili Snow Mountain," taken in the 1980s—a rare sight worth seeking out. In front of the temple lies Lake Lhamo Latso, whose name means "Holy Mother's Soul Lake" in Tibetan. Its calm waters reflect the entire temple complex, offering a classic vantage point for capturing inverted images of the monastery. The lakeside boardwalk also provides opportunities for birdwatching and wetland views, though some sections are floating bridges—watch your step while walking.
The visiting route is not complicated: after entering the temple gate, you'll first climb a steep staircase of over a hundred steps. Upon reaching the square in front of the main hall, you can enjoy a distant view of Shangri-La city. At an altitude of over 3,000 meters on the plateau, there's no need to rush—taking it slow is more advisable. The morning mist and rising sun make the golden roof of the main hall particularly dazzling, making it ideal to visit the temple in the morning and circle the lake in the afternoon. From the 26th to the 29th day of the 11th month in the Tibetan calendar (often falling around the turn of the Gregorian year), the annual Gedong Festival takes place here. The temple square hosts grand masked cham dances, with Tibetan locals from surrounding villages coming to worship and sightsee, creating a lively atmosphere perfect for experiencing local religious and folk customs.
