based on 656 reviewsShanghai Zoo, originally opened as Xijiao Park in 1954, adopted its current name in 1980, though many locals still refer to it by its former name. The zoo houses and exhibits over 600 rare wildlife species, featuring classic attractions like native Chinese animals such as giant pandas, golden monkeys, and South China tigers, as well as global representatives like gorillas, giraffes, Asian elephants, and flamingos, each with their own fanbase. The exhibits are organized by zones: herbivores, predators, birds, and amphibians/reptiles, interspersed with educational halls and the Goldfish Gallery. Built in 1972, the Goldfish Gallery, with its cylindrical glass tanks and retro winding corridor, has become a popular photo spot for young visitors. Swan Lake, within the zoo, is lush with reeds and rippling waters, dotted with small islands planted with pines, willows, and metasequoias. Waterfowl like swans, pelicans, and mandarin ducks glide across the lake, and even migrating night herons have settled here to breed. The expansive lawns and verdant trees give the zoo a garden-like ambiance, making it ideal for sunbathing or picnicking on clear days. Every fall, the zoo hosts its long-running Butterfly Ecology Month, offering close-up views of native butterflies like the common Mormon and the mesmerizing process of their metamorphosis. The zoo's sizable grounds require considerable walking to cover all major exhibits, so a half-day or longer visit is recommended for a leisurely experience.
