Hwaseong Haenggung was a palace where King Jeongjo stayed temporarily when visiting Hyeollyungwon. It was grander and more magnificent than any other temporary palace, served various purposes, and was also known as the secondary palace to Gyeongbokgung Palace. Hwaseong Fortress was built on the eastern side of Paldalsan Mountain between the 18th and 20th years of King Jeongjo's reign and served as the official residence for the local government office (equivalent to today's city hall). It is enclosed by four gates in the east, west, south, and north: Changnyongmun, Hwaseomun, Paldalmun (Paldal Gate), and Janganmun. Due to its outstanding architectural style, it is not only part of a World Heritage site but also a model of new city construction in South Korea.
