Hwaseong Haenggung Palace was a temporary residence for King Jeongjo during his visits to Hyeonryongwon Garden. More magnificent and extensive than any other Haenggung Palace, it served a wide range of purposes and was also known as a secondary palace to Gyeongbokgung Palace. Hwaseong was a fortified city built east of Paldalsan Mountain between the 18th and 20th years of King Jeongjo's reign. It normally served as the residence of the city government (present-day city hall). Hwaseong was surrounded by four gates in a row: Changyeongmun, Hwaseomun, Paldalmun, and Janganmun. Due to its outstanding architectural style, it is not only a UNESCO World Heritage Site but also a model of modern urban development in Korea.
