Lingshan Giant Buddha

The Lingshan Giant Buddha is an outdoor bronze statue of Sakyamuni Buddha. The overall design was created by renowned sculptor Mr. Wu Xianlin in strict accordance with the "thirty-two physical characteristics" of Buddha as recorded in Buddhist scriptures, with final approval by elder Mr. Zhao Puchu, completing the Buddhist theoretical system of "Five Buddhas of Five Directions". (The Lingshan Giant Buddha, together with the Tian Tan Buddha in Hong Kong to the south, the Leshan Giant Buddha in Sichuan to the west, the Yungang Giant Buddha in Shanxi to the north, and the Longmen Giant Buddha in Luoyang, Henan at the center, are collectively known as the "Five Directional Buddhas of China".)

The entire statue embodies solemnity, perfection, serenity, and meticulous detail, manifesting the compassionate countenance of the Buddha. The right hand forms the "abhaya mudra" (gesture of fearlessness), while the left hand displays the "varada mudra" (gesture of granting wishes), symbolizing the alleviation of suffering and the bestowal of joy upon all beings. During its construction, the Lingshan Giant Buddha seamlessly integrated ancient Buddhist artistic traditions with modern technology. It was assembled using advanced welding techniques and incorporates comprehensive measures for wind resistance, earthquake protection, corrosion resistance, and lightning prevention. The creation of the Lingshan Giant Buddha can truly be described as "solemn and perfect," representing an eternal fusion of culture, technology, history, religion, art, and natural landscapes.

The Lingshan Giant Buddha is an 88 m tall bronze standing statue of Sakyamuni Buddha, with the Buddha body measuring 79 m and the lotus petals 9 m. It consumed a total of 725 tons of copper. The Buddha body (excluding the lotus petals) consists of 1,560 copper wall panels, each 6-8 mm thick. The total unfolded area of all copper plates exceeds 9,000 m², with the total weld length of copper panels reaching 35 km. The lotus pedestal beneath the Buddha's feet is cast in tin bronze and consists of 4 layers of lotus petals, with 22 petals per layer, totaling 88 petals. Additionally, two elevators are installed in the podium at the base of the Buddha's body, specifically designed to transport devotees and visitors to the lotus pedestal. People can use them to reach the Buddha's feet, touch them, and this act is referred to as "embracing the Buddha's feet."
