Fan Chang Tien: Rhythm of the Southern Brush
This exhibition examines the artistic journey and enduring legacy of Fan Chang Tien (范昌乾) (1907–1987), a pivotal figure in the development of Chinese ink art in Singapore. It traces his southward movement from China to Thailand and finally to Singapore in 1956 – a journey marked by his commitment to art and education. Through a rich selection of paintings, poetry, and archival materials, the exhibition reveals how Fan dedicated himself to the practice of ink art while cultivating his identity as a scholar-artist, teacher, and steadfast master of the Chinese literati tradition.

It brings together her paintings and archival materials, offering a fresh perspective to re-examine her artistic legacy, including her profound depictions of identity, gender, labor, and urban life in the 1960s and 1970s—a period when Singapore and Malaya were undergoing dramatic transformations. As the second installment of the National Gallery Singapore's "Dalam Singapore" series, it focuses on important yet understudied artists and stories in Singapore's art history. The exhibition aims to reintroduce Lai Foong Moi's artistic practice to a new generation of audiences while deepening public understanding of her place in Singapore's artistic tradition.
