Worth the drive
After reading so much about City Point, we wanted to drive to Hopewell to see Grant's headquarters. It wasn't open when we went but it was still nice to see everything and read all the signs.
Grant lived and worked in a modest log cabin, not the grandiose mansion shown with this review. From here he supervised the siege at Petersburg and the enormous Union logistics operation at adjacent C...
I love the history of civil war. I enjoyed that place. Is interesting that General Grant lived in the simple cabin for a couple years and that was important for the final result of the Civil War.
Staying in Hopewell, we went often to look at the river.
Due to Covid 19 the buildings are not open to the public. There is parking on the street nearby (the parking lot closed). It is a great location at the intersection of the James and Appamatox rivers. ...
Unfortunely not open during our visit......we were able walk around the grounds.
