National Memorial on Vítkov Hill

On the top of the mountain, a giant knight statue of a tall horse is the first god of war in Czech history, the national hero of the Huss War, Jessica. Behind the statue is the Czech National Liberation Memorial. It was first a memorial hall for the Czechoslovak Legion after World War I, and the socialist era after World War II was transformed into a memorial hall for the Czechoslovak Red Army, and now it is a memorial hall for the Czech National Liberation, where each era has left its mark: There is a Soviet-style Red Army Memorial Hall and an Orthodox-themed Martyrs' Mourning Hall. Not only a memorial hall, but also a museum that briefly introduces the Czech (and Slovakia) military history for nearly a century.

This is a fascinating place that's well worth the climb up the hill. The monument at Vítkov was build in 1930s as a memorial to Czech legionaries in the World War I. It was rebuild in the 1950s and served as a communist monument and mausoleum of Klement Gotwald (the firs communist president. Today it houses the grave of an unknown soldier and a museum of modern Czech history (closed on Mondays) that gives you a nice insight to the turbulent 20th century. The monument is huge as is the statue of Jan Žižka in front of it. It's the third largest riding statue in the world and quite magnificent. Add the beautiful view over Vinohrady and it makes a great cocktail. You can also visit the military history museum below the hill.

There is a widely bright beach on the Vitkov Hill where various monuments are located and where various events are held. The bronze statue of the ridder Jan Žižka, who won in 1420 in front of the armies crossed in the battle of Vitkov, is large and is divided from several sides of the city. The monument of the unknown soldier is also available.
