Ready for the ultimate Okinawan escape? 🌊 Tokashiki Island delivers crystal-clear waters, lush green mountains, and insane natural vibes. If you’re in Naha, getting here is a breeze—just 1 hour by ferry and you’re in paradise!
Must-See: Aharen Observatory
Head straight to Aharen Observatory (Aharen, Tokashiki-son, Shimajiri-gun 901-3502 Okinawa) for knockout views. You’ll get that iconic coastline stretch with bright turquoise seas, surrounded by wild green vegetation and mountain backdrops—seriously Instagram-worthy on any sunny day. The spot is perfect for panoramic snaps and just soaking in some chill island energy.
Tip: Get here early for crowd-free photos, or pack a light snack for a mid-hike break—it’s a comfy walk-up and the sea breeze is strong!
How to Get Around:
Tokashiki is super compact, so walking or renting a bicycle makes exploring stress-free. Ferries from Naha depart regularly, so check schedules and book ahead on trip.com to lock down seats.
Food Tips:
Grab fresh seafood bowls or classic Okinawan noodles at local eateries near the Aharen beach area—everything is within easy walking distance!
Practical Stuff:
Currency: Japanese yen is king—bring some cash as card acceptance can be limited. Weather: Summer is peak season (think breezy and sunny), but always pack sunscreen. No visa needed for most tourists, but double-check if you’re coming from outside Japan.

The largest of the Kerama Islands is Tokashiki Island🌊
During busy periods, it's best to book a ferry seat in advance, but I couldn't get one. So, we decided to try our luck and arrived at the port early in the morning and got in line at the ticket window.
Lucky us! It turns out they have reserved slots at the ticket counter, so if you're planning to visit this island, buying a ticket won't be a problem. However, you need to arrive 1.5 hours before departure.
While we were on the ferry, I discovered I was seasick🤣. I was severely seasick for about 30 minutes and thought I was going to pass out. But on the way back, everything was fine.
The island itself is incredibly beautiful. Pure white sand, clear azure water... A rich underwater world, and we were lucky enough to swim with sea turtles.
By the way, transportation to the beaches is very well developed here. When you get off the ferry, you're offered a pass for roundtrip bus travel and luggage storage. They take you to an equipped beach, where you can rent snorkeling gear. Very convenient. There's also a cafe where you can have lunch; it's quite decent, though a bit pricey. Showers are free, and sun loungers are available for an extra fee.
The swimming area is fenced off and there are lifeguards, but if you go beyond their zone, your safety is entirely up to you. We actually went well beyond the zone, as it's the only place to find turtles, but the reefs are very close, so there's a high risk of cuts. Sometimes we had to swim very carefully, and in some places it was scary. In a couple of places, I couldn't figure out how to move without ripping my stomach open. And with a mask, everything looked closer than it actually was. Overall, it was fun.
