Going Dutch is an engaging and thought-provoking event that sparks a conversation about transparency, accountability, and collaboration in the art world. It delves into the challenging topic of discussing money honestly, which is often avoided. By shedding light on this issue, the event aims to address the negative impact of pretending to be successful without truly understanding what it means to "make it." After years of interacting with artists and creatives, the organizers realized that there is no definitive answer to what success entails in the creative field. In fact, the pressure to fake success has created a collective failure. Going Dutch aims to change this narrative by focusing on who bears the financial burden in creative endeavors. The event will feature open and honest discussions with various creatives, shedding light on their day jobs and revealing different paths to sustainable and realistic creative practices. Additionally, the event prompts a reevaluation of what sustainability truly means in the creative industry. It encourages creatives to reflect on the need for change in their approach, purpose, and actions, while emphasizing the importance of supporting one another. Going Dutch seeks to address the issue of undervaluation in the art world. It highlights the contradiction of demanding fair compensation for artists while expecting free or undervalued work. The event recognizes that many opportunities and open calls are organized by artists themselves, who are struggling to sustain their creative practices financially. Being undervalued for their time, effort, and expertise is disheartening. Going Dutch is the starting point for a transparent, accountable, collaborative conversation that aims to empower and uplift artists. The event will feature a panel discussion followed by small group Q&A sessions with the artists, providing an opportunity to delve deeper into their experiences and insights. Let Us See You is a 12-month project that offers curatorial support, artist development, and exhibition opportunities to artists based in Leeds. It culminates in a series of exhibitions across the city at partner venues. This project aims to democratize the curation and selection process for art shows by providing support and addressing the artists' specific needs. It builds on the inclusive work of Aire Place Studios, which actively supports communities facing barriers to participation. Let Us See You is generously supported by Leeds Inspired, a part of Leeds City Council. Don't miss Going Dutch at Leeds Art Gallery on February 17, 2024. Admission is free, so mark your calendar for this important event.
