Obscura III - CALL for ART: Alternative & Historic Photography is an art exhibition that will take place from September 1-29, 2023 at The Emporium Gallery in Downtown Knoxville. This event, hosted by The Big Camera, invites artists to submit their works of Historic and Alternative Photography for a chance to showcase their talent. The jurors, Adam Finkelston and James Meara, co-editors of The Hand Magazine, will carefully review all submissions and select the award winners. The Hand Magazine, founded in 2013, is dedicated to supporting and exhibiting hand-made artworks using mechanical or reproduction-based processes. They aim to showcase the most innovative and unique contemporary hand-printed photography and printmaking. The Best in Show winner will receive a cash prize of $300, while the Viewer's Choice winner will have the opportunity to attend a Big Camera workshop of their choice. Entry is limited to historic and alternative photo media, allowing artists to showcase their creativity through various techniques such as collage, mixed-media, darkroom work, cyanotype, Van Dyke printing, traditional film, and historic processes. Digital entries that solely rely on Photoshop manipulation or AI techniques will not be accepted. All artwork must be ready to hang or display. Artists can submit up to two works for a fee of $40 for the General Public or $35 for The Hand subscribers. The selected works will be notified by the week of August 14-18. Accepted artwork must be delivered to The Emporium on August 28th and picked up on October 2nd, or alternate arrangements can be made with Donna Moore or Anna Lawrence.
