"Code Noir" is a remarkable piece of literature that masterfully intertwines immense literary prowess and political significance. Drawing inspiration from the infamous "Code Noir" decrees passed by King Louis XIV in 1685, Lubrin's work consists of fifty-nine linked fictions that navigate the depths of slavery's historical impact. These vivid and multi-layered stories transcend genres, ranging from contemporary realism to dystopia, futuristic fantasy, and historical fiction. Each fiction is accompanied by black-and-white drawings by renowned artist Torkwase Dyson. Canisia Lubrin is a rising literary star, whose previous works include "Voodoo Hypothesis" and "The Dyzgraphxst". She has been awarded prestigious accolades such as the Griffin Poetry Prize, OCM Bocas Prize for Caribbean Literature, and the Derek Walcott Prize, among others. As a finalist for the Trillium Award for Poetry and the Governor General's Literary Award, Lubrin has garnered international recognition. She is currently the poetry editor at McClelland & Stewart and coordinates the Creative Writing MFA at the University of Guelph. Don't miss the opportunity to experience the magic of "Code Noir" and delve into these enchanting stories that resonate with profound wisdom. Dionne Brand, author of "Nomenclature", "Theory", and "Map to the Door of No Return", describes the book as "storytelling at its deepest and most intimate".
