The Half Marathon Florence is one of the most awaited events by athletes, who every year fill the streets of Florence for an exciting and competitive race. Professional and running enthusiasts run together the distance of 21.097 km between the streets and the squares of Florence. An opportunity to compete in a unique urban context in the world, with a flat path that goes through the historical center until it reaches the evocative atmosphere of the streets of Oltrarno. The number of participants of the Half Marathon Florence grew over the years, thanks to the organizational efforts that offer to the athletes and their partners the best conditions for the race and for a pleasant stay in the city.

This exhibition is the first dedicated to showcasing Florentine wax figures from the 16th and 17th centuries. As the title suggests, it aims to revive a stunning, once-lost art form: wax figure making. Wax figure making has been popular since ancient times and experienced a resurgence in the art world of Florence during the Medici period from the 15th to the late 17th centuries.

The exhibition pays homage to this pivotal figure in the history of modern art, whose works create spaces of interwoven color and light, inviting contemplation and maintaining a persistent tension between abstraction and spirituality.

Piazza del Duomo, area between cathedral and baptistery

Every Easter Sunday, Florence celebrates this religious holiday in a very special way. The Scoppio del Carro is more than 350 years old. Built in 1622, a complex carriage, two or three stories high, is pulled by a pair of oxen decorated with garlands through the streets of Florence, accompanied by an escort of 150 soldiers, musicians, and people dressed in 15th-century costumes, moving from Porta al Prato to Piazza del Duomo. The carriage was loaded with fireworks, while a line extended from the high altar inside the cathedral, with a mechanical dove ("colombina") attached to it. Shortly afterwards, during the singing of "Gloria in excelsis Deo" during Easter Mass, the Florentine cardinal lit the fuse on the dove with the Easter flame. The dove then sped through the church, igniting the carriage outside. During all this, the bells of Giotto's campanile rang out. The complex fireworks display that followed lasted about 20 minutes. A successful display of this event guaranteed a good harvest, stable life for citizens and good business.
