Chengdu Panda Base with Kids

If you have one day in Chengdu with children, go to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, the panda park nearest the city centre. Book a morning slot as soon as your dates are firm, because tickets are sold in each visitor's name and the Base caps how many people get in each day. Young children and visitors aged 60 or over get in free without a booking, and the ticket table below shows who qualifies. A passport works as ID.

Easy to book on trip.com. The research base is huge. We went at 1:30 and entered from west gate which was not busy at all. We paid for shuttle and started at South Gate. So many pandas to see. Highlight was seeing the baby pandas.

We had such an amazing time. The pandas are well looked after and very active. It rained when we got there but that didn’t detract from the experience. We ended up staying there for just over 8 hours. I would highly recommend

The Giant Panda Research Base is a must go when visiting Chengdu. Do go early in the morning when the Pandas are active and outdoors. When it gets warmer as the day progresses, the Pandas will go back indoors to sleep.

The place is definitely worth a visit. It's very large and has several beautifully maintained green areas. I would suggest limiting the number of visitors in several time slots; we went early in the morning and it was super crowded with tours.

★★★★★ A must-visit in Chengdu – get to know the "vegetarian bear" betterEasily a highlight of my October trip. Go early, as the pandas are most active around morning feeding. We watched them munching bamboo and climbing, and the cubs were the best part.Fun fact I learned: pandas are classified as carnivores, yet almost all they eat is bamboo, and they spend over half the day chewing it. The exhibits explain their habits and conservation work really well. The park is huge, green and well kept, with clear signs and shuttle carts. Don't miss the red pandas too.Tips: book tickets online, arrive before 8:30am, wear comfy shoes and plan 3–4 hours. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Chengdu!

Which parts of the Panda Base close on Mondays?

No.6 Giant Panda Villa, where Hua Hua lives, shuts every Monday, except on national public holidays. The Panda Art Museum also closes on Mondays for maintenance, with the same exception. If Monday is your only free day, plan the morning around the other enclosures and skip the South Gate route built around Hua Hua.

Which panda site suits your family?

How does Dujiangyan Panda Valley differ on booking, refunds and entry?

Panda Valley sells tickets online only, up to seven days ahead. Everyone must reserve, including children and older visitors on free or half-price tickets. At the Base, young children and visitors aged 60 or over skip the booking and simply show ID at the gate.

Which panda site suits your family?

Same-day reservations close at 17:00 from May to October and 16:30 from November to April. You can't enter before opening, and each ticket gives one entry, in the morning or afternoon on your reserved date.

You can get a refund only before the ticket is used. Cancel under "My Orders" in the Panda Valley WeChat account, and the money goes back to your original payment method within 3 to 7 working days. Bookings can't be moved to another day. With a passport, enter the passport number when you reserve, then scan the QR code or show the passport at the gate. Pets, drones and skateboards aren't allowed.

How does the day go, hour by hour?

Arrive at opening and head for the outdoor enclosures first. The Base publishes no activity times and doesn't promise that any panda will be on view, so keep the plan loose.

How does the day go, hour by hour?
  • The night before: Check that every passport matches its booking, pick your gate (the South Gate if you want to see Hua Hua, the Base's best-known panda), and if it's a Monday, cross No.6 Giant Panda Villa off the list.
  • 7:30 (8:00 from November to February): Gates open. The visitor centres open at the same time, so drop bags and pick up a free stroller first. Sightseeing bus tickets go on sale now too.
  • Straight after: Go to No.6 Giant Panda Villa first to see Hua Hua.
  • 9:00: The Bamboo Tower opens. Entry is free with a reservation, one QR code per person, and last entry is 16:30. It takes 200 people at a time and can close in bad weather.
  • 12:00: Morning entry closes and afternoon entry begins.
  • 18:00 (17:30 from November to February): Clearance starts and the sightseeing bus stops running.
🎁 Staying near the Base? Chengdu hotels on Trip.com put you a short taxi ride from the gates for the 7:30 opening, and cheap flights to Chengdu are listed too. A China eSIM keeps the booking QR code and the Base's WeChat account within reach at the gate.

What do you need for tickets, passports and getting in?

You book online in each visitor's name, for a set day and a morning or afternoon slot, and bring that same ID to the gate. With children, take the morning, when the pandas are most active.

What do you need for tickets, passports and getting in?
  • You can reserve up to 14 days ahead. Busy dates can sell out, and once the daily quota is used up there are no more tickets for that day.
  • Book through the Base's own WeChat account or mini program, or on Trip.com, one of the platforms the Base lists as authorised.
  • A ticket is valid for one person and one ID, so each family member who needs a ticket gets a separate booking. One ID can buy only one ticket a day.
  • A morning ticket gets you in from opening until 12:00. An afternoon ticket starts at 12:00, and the Base asks afternoon visitors not to arrive before then.

Free entry for children goes by age or height, whichever helps you, so a tall six-year-old gets in free and so does a seven-year-old under 1.3 metres.

For a foreign child aged 7 to 18 on a student ticket, the ID is the passport they were booked with. Students over 18 show a student card as well. Anyone who can't show the right documents pays the difference up to a full ticket at the gate, according to the Base's ticket page.

If plans change and a ticket goes unused, refund it through the channel you bought it from. The window opens at 17:00 on your visit day and closes 30 days later, after which the ticket is cancelled with no refund. The rule has applied since 27 August 2026, and a used ticket can't be refunded.

Trip.com is one of the booking platforms the Base lists as authorised, so you can book the adult ticket below in English before you travel.

Metro Line 3 serves both main gates, with a shuttle bus for the last stretch.

  • South Gate: Metro Line 3 to Panda Avenue, exit A, then shuttle bus 408. Or Line 3 to Zoo Station, then bus 655 or 87.
  • West Gate: Metro Line 3 to Junqu General Hospital, exit B, then shuttle bus 409, about 10 minutes.

The Base's own taxi estimates:

  • Chunxi Road: about USD 5.97 (CNY 40), 25 to 35 minutes.
  • Chengdu East railway station: about USD 5.97 (CNY 40), 25 to 30 minutes.
  • Shuangliu Airport: about USD 14.92 (CNY 100), 40 to 50 minutes.
  • Tianfu Airport: about USD 29.84 (CNY 200), 60 to 70 minutes.

With a stroller and small children, a taxi to the gate is simpler than the metro, which still leaves a shuttle bus at the end. The Base also lists scenic shuttle buses from Chunxi Road and Kuanzhai Alley.

What happens at the entry gate, and which ID documents does the Panda Base accept?

At the gate, go to the "Channel for Visitors with Original ID Documents" and scan the ID you booked with. Passports are accepted, as are Chinese Resident Identity Cards and the Mainland Travel Permits for Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan residents, according to the Base's ticket page.

What do you need for tickets, passports and getting in?

If the original is back at the hotel, show a photo of your own ID at the "Channel for Visitors Without Original ID Documents". If the details don't match the booking, staff won't let you in. Keep passports somewhere quick to reach, because each person scans their own.

A cheap China eSIM keeps the booking QR code and your metro directions working all the way to the gate.

What are the family practicalities on site?

Start at the visitor centre by your gate. The South and West gates each have one, and it's where you pick up a stroller or warm a bottle.

What are the family practicalities on site?
  • Strollers: The West and South Gate visitor centres lend strollers, wheelchairs and umbrellas for free.
  • Baby rooms: Both visitor centres have a mother and baby room with changing mats and milk warmers.
  • Lockers: Both the West and South gates have self-service lockers, so you can drop coats and bags before you walk in.
  • Water: Drinking water is free at both visitor centres, the clinics and the Bamboo Tower, and some water points give hot water.
  • Lost and found: Each visitor centre has a lost-and-found desk.
  • Crowds: On public holidays the Base pauses entry once about 36,000 people are inside at the same time, according to its February and September 2026 notices. It doesn't say whether it does this on ordinary days.
  • Park rules: Smoking, open flames, drones, roller skates and skateboards are banned inside.
  • Visitor centre hours: 7:30 to 18:00 from March to October, and 8:00 to 17:30 from November to February.
  • Rest areas: Both gates have free rest areas with books. Paid shared strollers and power banks are also for rent, separate from the free visitor-centre strollers, but the Base doesn't publish their prices, so ask at the information desk.

Anyone aged 7 or over who is 1.3 metres or taller needs a bus ticket at USD 4.48 (CNY 30). It's valid only for its holder on the visit day, at any stop. Book up to 14 days ahead through the Base's official channels or buy one on the day, according to the Base's bus page. With small children, the bus saves a lot of tired legs.

Children aged 6 or under, or under 1.3 metres, ride free on a lap, but each adult can hold only one. If you're one adult with two small children, ask the staff at the boarding point before you get on.

Bus tickets are sold from 7:30 to 17:30 between March and October, and service ends at 18:00. From November to February, sales run 8:00 to 17:00 and service ends at 17:30. Unused bus tickets can be refunded within the same 30-day window as entry tickets.

The bus runs a fixed route between the two gates. At either end you join the queue again, and your ticket is checked before each new leg.

What should you do if a child is hurt or unwell at the Panda Base?

Go to a clinic, or ask any staff member for the nearest one. The South Gate Clinic is next to the Bronze Panda Statue, and the Panda Reception Hall Clinic is next to the Rising Sun Giant Panda Pavilion. The clinic hotline is 028-83516808 and the tourism hotline is 028-83510033. For anything more serious, the Base has an agreement with a nearby general hospital. Save both hotlines in your phone before you go in.

🎁 Travelling with small children? A China eSIM lets you call the Base's clinic hotline and open the booking QR code on the day, and Chengdu hotels near Metro Line 3 shorten the trip to the gate.

What are the common mistakes and how do you recover?

Most of these start with the booking or the ID check, so they're easiest to fix before you reach the gate.

What are the common mistakes and how do you recover?
  • Sold out: The day's tickets ran out before you booked. Book as soon as your date falls inside the 14-day window. If it's already sold out, pick another date, or book Dujiangyan Panda Valley, which sells its own tickets online up to seven days ahead.
  • ID mismatch: Each ticket is tied to the ID it was booked with, and staff turn away any other. Check every passport against its booking before you leave the hotel. If one is wrong, book a new ticket with the right passport while that day's tickets last, and refund the wrong one from 17:00.
  • Wrong day: Check the date, and whether it's a Monday, before you pay. If you've already booked the wrong day, book the right one and refund the unused ticket through the channel you bought it from, any time from 17:00 on the visit day up to 30 days later.
  • Turning up early on an afternoon ticket: Afternoon entry starts at 12:00 and the Base asks you not to arrive sooner, so plan to get there at noon. If you're early, wait in the free rest area by the gate.
  • Wrong gate: The South and West gates are reached by different shuttle buses from Metro Line 3, so pick one before you set off. For Hua Hua, the Base says to enter by the South Gate. If you end up at the West Gate, the sightseeing bus runs between the two.
  • A child close to the free-entry line: Free entry goes by age or height, so carry the child's passport in case staff check the age. A child under the height limit gets in free whatever their age.
  • Student card left at the hotel: Over-18 students on a student ticket must show one, or pay the difference up to a full ticket at the gate.
  • A lost hat or toy: Ask at the lost-and-found desk in either visitor centre, or call 028-83507814.

Chunxi Road Commercial Area Chengdu|0.86km from city center
Located close to Chunxi Road(5 min walk) and Tianfu Square(10 min walk), exit at Exit E1 or Exit A from Chunxi Metro Station for nearest exit. The lobby is huge and clean, the single room also huge and comfortable. The breakfast variety is good for 4* rated hotel with noodle/salad/pastry station and hot dishes like Thai chicken curry, fried mixed vegetable etc, good breakfast to start the day. The staffs are helpful but might hv some difficulty to understand some crucial request. I asked for no room clean but need water bottles and ended up getting none. I very like the carpetted room but I found few strains of hair left, the housekeepers could do abit more hard vacuum during cleaning I guess. Others were spotless. There a lot of eateries and shops around the hotel and this is very convenient for guests. The local post office is nearby for someone love to postcross too. Very recommend this hotel for all travellers coming to Chengdu.

This place was such a good find for us travelling with our toddler. It was like an apartment with great features such as a fully equipped kitchen, washing machine and drier, but with all services and amenities of a 5 star hotel as well such as room service, daily cleaning, and hotel breakfast. The room separation to the living area was a bonus for us with a toddler with an earlier bed time, and this hotel was was the only place during our travels where they provided a proper cot rather than a travel or foldable one. Staff were very helpful and saw our needs before we asked. Great pool and kids play area.

I had a wonderful stay! Check-in was quick and efficient, and the front desk staff were very welcoming. The room was spotlessly clean, the bathroom was dry, and the bedding was soft. It was also very quiet at night, ensuring a great night's sleep. You can really see the thought put into the details, and it offers great value for money. I've already saved it to my favorites and will definitely stay at Celebrity Ruicheng Hotel again next time I'm in Chengdu.

Yulin Life Plaza and Tongzilin commercial area Chengdu|4.31km from city center
I stayed in an executive twin room on the 19th floor. The hotel is conveniently located right next to Tongzilin subway station, making it easy to get to Yulin and Chunxi Road. The room has been renovated and feels simple yet spacious. The two standard single beds with soft bedding provided ample space for two people. The bathroom features an open-plan shower design, without a bathtub. Booking an executive room grants exclusive access to the executive lounge, with complimentary buffet breakfast, afternoon tea, and evening happy hour. The lounge was quiet with few people, and offered a good selection of light meals and a hot noodle station. The high-floor, floor-to-ceiling windows offered expansive views of the city's nightscape in the southern part of town. All soft drinks in the in-room mini-bar were complimentary, and a coffee machine was provided, ensuring all essential amenities were available. Service was prompt, and the elevators operated smoothly. Overall, the location is convenient, and the executive lounge benefits offer great value for money. However, the bathroom setup is quite basic; I wouldn't recommend it for guests looking for a bathtub or high-end toiletries. It's a great choice for business travelers or short trips.

This hotel is situated at an excellent location right opposite metro station and near Chunxi Road Pedestrian Street with plenty of restaurants, shops and entertainment options, which makes our travel and stay super easy and convenient. Hotel staff are friendly and willing to help. Hotel restaurant is with nice decorations and mainly serves Chinese style breakfast and cuisines, however, they do have two coffee machines, which is a bonus. Hotel rooms are cleaned daily and the cleaning ladies are very friendly and helpful. Overall, we had a very pleasant stay and this hotel is highly recommended!
