Braving the cold wave, I went to Hengshan to see the snow. It was a two-day trip from Hong Kong, taking the high-speed rail round trip. The snow scenery was beautiful. Had a great time!

Nanyue Mount Hengshan (衡山): Tickets, Map & Visiting Guide

Unlike the better-known peaks in the west, Hengshan is a forested, temple-covered mountain rather than a vertical rock climb. The classic route takes you from the Grand Temple at the foot, past shrines and pavilions, to the summit at Zhurong Peak, and the sunrise from the top is the reason many people hike it overnight.

My guide covers tickets and hours, how to get there, the route in detail, what to see, when to go and Hengshan hotels.

What Is Mount Hengshan (衡山)?

What Is Mount Hengshan 衡山?

Mount Hengshan is the southern member of the Five Great Mountains, the group that also includes Mount Tai in Shandong, Mount Hua in Shaanxi, Mount Heng in Shanxi and Mount Song in Henan. The range runs about 150 kilometres from Huiyan Peak in the south to Yuelu Mountain in Changsha in the north, and it contains 72 named peaks. The highest, Zhurong Peak, reaches 1,300.2 metres.

The mountain is granite, forested and unusually green for a sacred peak in China, with forest cover of around two thirds and vegetation that changes with altitude. It is a national nature reserve, established provincially in 1984 and upgraded to national status in 2005, and a national 5A scenic area. Its religious life is equally layered: Buddhist temples, Taoist shrines and Confucian elements coexist here, which is why the mountain feels lived-in rather than museum-like.

Why the Mountain Matters Culturally

  • It is the Southern Great Mountain, one of the oldest objects of imperial and popular worship in China.
  • The Grand Temple at the foot is the largest temple complex in southern China and the largest group of ancient buildings in Hunan.
  • The phrase "may you live as long as the Southern Mountain" (寿比南山) refers to this mountain, which is why you will see longevity motifs everywhere.
  • It remains an active pilgrimage site, especially during the autumn pilgrimage season, when groups of worshippers in red headbands walk up with incense.

Mount Hengshan (衡山) vs Mount Heng (恒山): Don't Book the Wrong Mountain

Mount Hengshan (衡山) vs Mount Heng (恒山): Don't Book the Wrong Mountain

Mount Hengshan (衡山) vs Mount Heng (恒山): Don't Book the Wrong Mountain

This is a real problem for English-speaking travellers, because two different sacred mountains share the same romanised name. Mount Hengshan (衡山) is in Hunan and is the Southern Great Mountain. Mount Heng (恒山) is in Shanxi and is the Northern Great Mountain. They are about 1,300 kilometres apart, in different provinces, with different stations and different scenery.

Where Is Mount Hengshan and How to Get There

The mountain is in Nanyue District, Hengyang, in southern Hunan. The base town, Nanyue, sits at the foot of the mountain and is where you find the Grand Temple, the visitor centre, hotels and restaurants. Once you reach Nanyue town, everything starts on foot. The Grand Temple is a short walk from the main hotels, and the scenic-area gate and visitor centre are close by. From there, the eco-bus takes you up the mountain road to the South Heavenly Gate area, and the final stretch to Zhurong Peak is walked. If you are hiking the whole way, you skip the bus and start climbing from the gate.

Mount Hengshan Opening Hours and Tickets

Mount Hengshan Opening Hours and Tickets

The scenic area is listed as open all day, but the ticket gates, the eco-bus and the individual temples keep their own hours, so plan around those rather than the mountain itself. Ticket prices change with the season and with policy, so confirm before you travel.

Typical detail (Subject to change, please check the selling page)

Notes

Scenic area entry

Around ¥110 to ¥120, roughly US$16

The Trip.com listing shows about US$16.46; real-name booking with passport or ID

Eco-bus to the upper mountain

Roughly ¥70 to ¥80 return

Runs from the visitor centre toward the South Heavenly Gate area; the old cableway has been out of service for years, so buses do the climbing

Grand Temple of Mount Heng

About ¥50 to ¥60

Ticketed separately from the mountain; worth the visit even if you skip the hike

Gate and bus hours

Roughly 07:00 to 17:30 or 18:00

Earlier in peak season, earlier closing in winter; the last bus down matters more than the first bus up

Suggested time

1 to 2 days

One day for the summit, two if you want the temples and the sunrise

Booking Notes

  • Tickets are real-name, so bring the passport or ID you booked with.
  • Book through the official scenic-area channels or Trip.com; holiday slots and sunrise weekends sell out.
  • Keep the entry ticket and the bus ticket separate in your mind, because they are checked at different points.
  • Student, senior and child discounts exist but require documentation, and the rules follow Chinese ID categories.

Mount Hengshan Hiking Route Map: The Classic Ascent

Mount Hengshan Hiking Route Map: The Classic Ascent

Mount Hengshan Hiking Route Map: The Classic Ascent

There are three realistic ways to do the mountain: the full hike, the bus-plus-short-hike combination, and the night hike for sunrise. All three end at Zhurong Peak.

The Full Hike from the Grand Temple

This is the traditional pilgrimage route, and it is about 11 to 12 kilometres one way with roughly 1,200 metres of ascent. Fit walkers take four to six hours up and three to four hours down, and the path is a mix of stone steps, paved road and forest trail.

Stage

What you pass

Approximate time from the start

1

Grand Temple of Mount Heng and the scenic-area gate

0:00

2

Huayan Lake and the Fanyin Valley trailhead

0:30

3

Martyrs' Shrine (Zhonglie Ci)

1:15

4

Banshan Pavilion, the halfway point

2:00 to 2:30

5

Mojing Terrace and Magu Fairyland

3:00

6

Treasury Sutra Hall and the upper forest

3:30 to 4:00

7

South Heavenly Gate

4:30

8

Shangfeng Temple and Zhurong Peak

5:00 to 6:00

The Bus Plus Short Hike

Take the eco-bus from the visitor centre to the South Heavenly Gate area, which takes roughly 40 to 50 minutes on the winding road, then walk the last 1.5 to 2 kilometres to the summit in about 30 to 50 minutes. This is the option for families, day trippers and anyone who wants the summit without a five-hour climb. The bus ride is steep and twisty, so take motion sickness tablets if you are prone.

The Night Hike for Sunrise

Many visitors start climbing between 22:00 and midnight to reach Zhurong Peak before dawn. The route is the same, the temples are lit, and the summit gets cold and windy before sunrise. You need a headlamp, warm layers and a realistic sense of your own pace, because missing the sunrise after a night of climbing is a special kind of disappointment. Check the sunrise time for your date and add a buffer.

Alternative Trails

  • Fanyin Valley: a quieter, stream-side trail that joins the main route near the Martyrs' Shrine, good for avoiding the road.
  • Mojing Terrace and Magu Fairyland: the most scenic mid-mountain section, worth walking even if you bus the rest.
  • Water Curtain Cave: a separate side trip at the foot of the mountain, not on the main summit route.

Best Time to Visit Mount Hengshan

Best Time to Visit Mount Hengshan

The mountain changes character completely through the year, and the best season depends on whether you want flowers, cool air, clear skies or ice.

Season

Conditions

Crowds

Rating

Spring, March to May

Mild, green, azaleas in bloom

Moderate, busy around May Day

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Summer, June to August

Cooler than the cities below, afternoon storms

Busy with domestic summer travel

⭐⭐⭐⭐ a good escape from the heat

Autumn, September to November

Clear skies, comfortable temperatures, best visibility

Busy, and National Day week is packed

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ best overall

Winter, December to February

Cold, rime ice and snow on the upper slopes

Quietest, except around Chinese New Year

⭐⭐⭐⭐ for photography, with icy-path caveats

Dates to Avoid

  • The first day of the eighth lunar month, when the pilgrimage season opens and the mountain fills with worshippers.
  • Chinese New Year, especially the first three days.
  • Labour Day week in early May and National Day week from 1 to 7 October.
  • Weekends during the autumn pilgrimage season, which are the busiest of the year.

Weather Notes

The summit is roughly 5 to 8 degrees cooler than the town at the foot, and wind chill makes it feel colder. Cloud and mist are common, and the "sea of clouds" that makes the sunrise famous is never guaranteed. In winter, ice on the upper road can suspend the eco-bus, so check before you rely on it.

What to Prepare for Mount Hengshan

  • Layers, including a windproof shell. Even in summer the summit is cool before sunrise.
  • Grippy walking shoes or light hiking boots; the stone steps are slippery when wet and icy in winter.
  • A headlamp and spare batteries if you are doing the night hike, plus a power bank for your phone.
  • Water and snacks. Food on the mountain is limited and more expensive than in town.
  • Rain gear, because mountain weather changes quickly.
  • Sun protection: hat, sunglasses and sunscreen above the treeline.
  • Your passport or ID, since tickets are real-name.
  • Motion sickness tablets for the eco-bus, which takes a long, winding road.
  • A little cash for small stalls and incense shops.
  • Winter traction spikes if you are visiting between December and February.
  • An offline map and a screenshot of your ticket, because signal is patchy on the upper mountain.
