We chose this hotel over a different less expensive hotel down the street because of the highly reviewed restaurant and the beautiful interior photos on the website. We paid around $400 for this room. When we arrived, we discovered that the hotel was hosting a Classic Cars event. All of the parking spaces at the front entrance and along the sides were taken up by Classic Cars and parade tents filled with partying people. There was a very loud band blocking the hotel entrance as well, and it was raining. This all might have been fun if we were Classic Car enthusiasts, but we are not. We're just regular family people and we were there for a baptism at the church down the road. The hotel bar and restaurant were completely filled with event guests. We discovered we had been booked into an Accessible room, meaning that it was outfitted for wheelchairs, but we are young(ish) and not disabled. Other than that, the room was pretty......until we opened the curtains and were staring at what must have been the entire HVAC system for the hotel. Possibly worst of all, there was a piped-in scent throughout the hotel - even in our room - that reminded me of cheap 1980's men's musk cologne. It was awful. It permeated our clothes, and my hair. All night, cars were revving their engines. However, the front desk staff was very nice. What we experienced was definitely not what was advertised by this hotel.

The Daxton is a great hotel it’s pretty consistent every time I stay. I rate cleanliness a 3 because my experience has been hit and miss. The first and second time I stayed the cleanliness was on point. The third time I stayed they put me in a room that just wasn’t very clean they apologized, moved me immediately and upgraded my room that was nice. The last time I stayed whoever cleaned my bathroom had shedding hair or something and there were long strands of hair that were not my own in the shower and on my towel. That wasn’t cool but it happens. The amenities are great they have a complimentary snack area in each floor with coffee, tea, beverages and little pastries and snacks which is an excellent extra and overall the service is great. The area around the hotel is very walkable there is great shopping and food options there’s even a nice park nearby. The Daxton has become my go to hotel when visiting MI and I come up quite a bit.

There is no hot breakfast, so the breakfast is just a few biscuits and coffee. Very disappointed, there is nothing to eat next to it. The room equipment is very old and the sanitary conditions are generally the same.

On tuesday night (July 9) at midnight I entered the Holiday Inn (after having ”succesfully checked in at 8 pm) only to find my key did not work. When I went downstairs to talk to the clerk, he was immediatly very defiant. Adam, the staff person, stated that it ”obviously” did not work because my credit card did not have suficent funds. For the record, I have a corporate credit card that has a very hefty credit line. I explained that I had checked in succesfully earlier that night, but he was not having it. He would not accept the same credit card, or even try to make it work, and said I needed another card or he could not help me. This is at midnight, so I obviously had very little alternate options of asking a colleague or another hotel for assistance. Adam was so rude, that after a back and forth of a few minutes, I left dumbfounded- to the streets to find a solution. Again, at midnight, in Detroit. I walked to The Townsend where I was helped even though they were sold out (see my review). Now- this was a last minute reservation, and I was willing to give Holiday Inn another chance, because I had had two previous bad experiences at a Holiday Inn this year. The first being at Pomona, California, where I went on a business trip and had no wifi for the 3 days I was there. No aplogies, no explanation. Just ”find a starbucks with wifi” as a solution. The second experience was near Gainseville wher I stayed 3 days and my bathroom was out of service for the 3 days. The 3 days they promised to fix it, yet they did not. Did not offer me an alternate room, they only offered me extra points on my loyalty card. This was obviously the last straw. I have shared this experience with my colleagues and we have all pledged to never stay at a Holiday Inn. I work for a multinational compnay. We have about four offices with approximately 200 employees who travel consistently to the Birmingham office for business. Holiday Inn can now thank Adam for losing that business with his disregard for guest services. As a final note, my assistant called my credit card company, and Adam the following morning. She confirmed with Adam that it was a mistake on his part, and he realized that a few minutes later, yet he never bothered to call me on my cell to have me come back. He just wrote it off as a ”miscommunication” amongst his staff. Thanks for nothing.

They have totally upgraded their rooms. They were clean, bathroom especially was clean. I liked the little desk they had there. They didn’t have any light bulbs in the light and it’s looks dubious from outside but it was quiet. Mini fridge, microwave and safe. They might want to invest in some new new ac units, it sound like ice pouring when it cut down. My husband is 6’4 and I’m 5’11 but no fighting over the bed! But was big and roomy and super comfortable!

We stayed here last month while visiting family in the area. Normally we’d stay with them, but with Covid 19 we felt more comfortable staying in a large hotel chain which I’d been hearing had enhanced cleaning and sanitizing. When we pulled up, we noticed a sign on the exterior door to the lobby that stated something to the effect of “masks required in all common areas of the hotel. Any violations could result in eviction”. Good. This is what we were looking for. It went downhill from there. After checking in, we went up to our room. Elevator door opens and there stands a group of people, none of them wearing masks. Our room appeared clean enough. There was a bit of an odor which I attributed to the cleaning/sanitizing. When I went back out to the car there was another person standing in the lobby on the phone with no mask on and the guy at the desk wasn’t doing anything about it. So much for enforcement of the rules. The next day I showered and noticed very little shampoo in the provided shampoo tube. I think that the cleaning crew didn’t replace all of the toiletries from the last guest. Gross. I asked the front desk about it and they assured me more cleaning was going on but could not give me specifics. We also found trash (photos attached) from a previous guest in two spots in the room so the thorough cleaning is bunk. The cleaning crew were also standing around the hallways talking to each other (with guests walking by!) without masks on. Loud guests in the hallways until late at night as well. Overall just a terrible experience. Would not recommend or stay here again and I’ve had numerous great experiences with the Springhill Suites chain and Marriott properties in general.

Despite my experiences, during my stay, I still rated it a 4 because the manager on duty and the front desk staff were helpful and very friendly. Always a smile! Good - Room was clean. TV was a decent size and worked. I got my high floor request. Breakfast was fabulous on Friday morning. I did did not ever have to wait long for the elevator. Maintenance came very quickly when requested. Always provided towels when asked. Customer service from manager on duty ( I apologize that I do not remember her name) and front desk staff was excellent. Bad - None of the pepper shakers in the eating area worked; the Saturday and Sunday breakfast was not good at all - I do not eat pork and despite having the option of Turkey bacon on Friday, they said they do not serve that on Saturday and Sunday. That was a shocker for me that they did not support those with dietary requirements. I included breakfast in my stay so it would have been good to have other options than just scrambled eggs and carbs. Ugly - The water was shut off with no warning or communication for at least two hours which caused us to miss an appointment. Water did not drain in the bathtub so maintenance had to come and fix it and the water came out brown and dirty of course when it came back on. I completely understood that a water leak is out of your control but maybe consider putting a robocall system to rooms or at least send a message through Hilton Honors app. How would you communicate to visitors if there was an emergency? That’s the part that worried me. The room next door was having a party until early hours of the morning with loud music and banging. I am not a complainer or cause any problems and I didn’t want to be a Debbie Downer Downer so I blocked it out and put the tv on. I was tired so I eventually fell asleep. Much of the bad and ugly will most likely not affect everyone on the average stay.
