Hideo and his wife Yukako operate a couple of different restored houses in the lovely village of Keihoku (famous for its tall cedars and beautiful mountain walking). We stayed in a 200-year-old restored thatch-roofed house which was Hideo's family home. A stay isn't complete without a walk through the woods with Hideo who also offers tours of most of the major sites in the countryside and even in Kyoto city. Yukako is an amazing cook. Our dinners together each night were a highlight. Highly recommended.

We stayed at the Keizankaku ryokan as a family of two adults and two school age children. We chose the Keizankaku because it has rooms that features private outdoor baths so you can experience the Japanese onsen without going to a more public bath. It also advertises as a child-friendly ryokan so we were confident that our children would be welcomed as guests. The clientele was mostly Japanese. The Keizankaku is located in the mountains outside of Kyoto, about 45 minutes away by car or by public transportation. The ryokan provides a bus to and from Kameoka Station so it is possible to get here on public transportation. The ryokan building is not traditional, consisting of several low-rise buildings, so don’t expect Japanese authenticity in the building. The interior is very typical of ryokans of this class and of this age, dominated by late 70’s early 80’s furnishings, fluorescent lighting, and a pink-pastel color scheme. All of it is clean and functional, but neither authentically Japanese nor modern. We stayed in a Japanese style room with Private open air bath in the Second Building. In my opinion, this is the room to get for those people who want to experience Japanese baths without having to go to a public bath. The room is a typical Japanese tatami room where the sitting area is converted into the sleeping area in the evening by the maids. It was spacious and nice enough for our family. We had our kaiseki dinner in a private room instead of in our room. Our dinner setup had individual tables and chairs in a tatami room which was frankly more comfortable for our kids than sitting on the floor. The meal was good, with really wide variety of dishes. One highlight was the fugu which is a poisonous pufferfish which requires special skills to prepare. The child meal was unexpectedly large … basically it had the same number of courses as the adult meal, but replaced the complicated dishes (such as the aforementioned fugu) with simpler items. Overall, it was a good (but not WOW!) meal, and a good introduction to this style of dining. In our opinion, the breakfast buffet was a more satisfying meal because it was simpler in preparation. It featured both western breakfast items, as well as a huge assortment of Japanese breakfast dishes. There was something here for everyone, and lots of things to try. The Keizankaku is admittedly a little out-of-the-way from mainstream Kyoto, but it can be worth the effort depending on your needs for the ryokan experience.

大阪神戸から1時間以内で行けて都会の喧騒から逃れられる貴重なスポットです。ファミリー、カップルにもお勧め、此処で頂くお料理はフレンチのシェフの和食は最高に美味しいです。 We have experienced nice Sasayama NIPPONIA before so we know they are good in many ways to amuse the guests. What makes unique about the places are they renovated very old Japanese houses into cozy modern hotel rooms. About 20minutes away from there by car, there is a another nipponia place in post town Fukuisumi. It was in the middle of Preservation area for traditional buildings. And main office and accommodation is the same in one place and very traditional housing reformed into a modern way you can enjoy for the new experience. We were not expected high quality sophisticated cuisines in there, but contrary, from the open kitchen, you can smell the taste before you eat and they serve cuisine on the dishes with the name of pottery’s . It’s French or Japanese? Feel like you are having extraordinary foods. After the dinner, we’ve looked up to see stars in clear sky for awhile, next morning before breakfast, maybe you should try the coffee house near there. And walking to the shrine or see the town end big 800 years tree 🌲 before you leave the place.

Kintetsu Department Store upstairs, shopping is very convenient, and tax refund is also convenient. The airport bus is very punctual, but you should not go to the airport too early. Japan has a set entry time. If you go early, you will also queue up at the check-in counter.

I don't even know where to begin. We have spent three weeks in Japan and unfortunately only one night at Bishamon house. It has been our best night abroad ever. This says a lot since we have travelled every continent. The warmth of Christian, Tsuzumi and the kids just overwhelmed. They really give you a place in their home and family. You feel as you are a part of their family. We where welcomed at the station and then had numerous of options for things to do in the area or at the house. We chose the 'Seven Lucky Temples' walk. It is fun to do and navigating it is maybe a bit hard. But we had fun exploring the area. After picking is up from our hike they made us a nice hot bath and prepared dinner. Dinner is served for the entire family and we could experience Nabe for the first time. Yes, you sure want this. It is a wonderfull Japanese dish, full with all sorts of ingredient. We absolutely loved it. The house is gorgeous and whenever you want you have it for yourself. You can decide on breakfast time and the next morning spot on you'll get a full breakfast with everything your western heart desires. Toast, egg, yoghurt, cereal. It was our best breakfast in Japan, thanks Christian! Overall we would just like to say thank you to the family. You have been so warm and kind and gave us so much more than a night in Kameoka. You gave us the best experience in Japan with your warmth and kindness. Whenever in Japan we will make sure to visit again. Because after nabe we would love to experience Christians Italian cooking ;-)
