I stayed 4 nights at Royal Tulum Catalonia and as a frequent traveler in my 30s I want to give my opinion so you don’t make the same mistake I made. This is a resort for older couples who just want to lay on the beach and do nothing. The resort is beautiful and the pool and jacuzzi are nice. The staff tries hard to give good service. But the food is absolute trash and the drinks are even worse. You are far from downtown so if you want to go out you will have to take lots of taxis which add up. Also the staff will try to book taxis and excursions for you at a crazy marked up price. It’s best to leave the resort and flag down your own taxi and pay for the excursions when you arrive. Pros: beautiful resort, nice pool, pretty beach Cons: food is horrible, cheap alcohol, have to make reservations for dinner, only allowed 1 hour at the spa, far from downtown requiring lots of taxis, lots of bugs.

Rental basis: Room with own facilitiesNumber of bedrooms: 1; Number of other rooms with beds: 0In the world of commercialized mega-resorts, it has become increasingly difficult to find beachfront accommodation in a natural, unspoiled setting at a reasonable price. Secreto Xpuha is a rustic, natural cabin literally a stone's throw from the waves on beatifull Xpu-Ha beach. If you're looking to immerse yourself in nature with basic necessities provided, there aren't many places like it.The Front Terrace offers a world class view and direct exposure to the turquoise sea and waves crashing on the offshore reef, palm trees swaying in the breeze, truly dreamy. You could travel around the world and not enjoy a more beautiful view. Afternoons were spent relaxing on the porch, reading, soaking up the tranquility and looking at the mesmerizing view. The wind, the waves and the sun clear the mind and cause a zen state. I kept the doors open all night and slept with the waves, occasionally waking up to see the stars, then woke up and had coffee on the deck. With the constant breeze offshore there is no need for air conditioning and no bugs. The thatched-roof hut has everything you need, with a private bathroom, hot shower, basic kitchen, electricity, and wi-fi. It's natural, rustic and basic so don't expect 4 star accommodation, you are literally on the beach so be prepared for wind, sun and sand.Xpu-Ha is a world class beach with crystal clear waters covering all shades from turquoise to deep blue and purple, with powdery soft white sand and it really can't be beat. Since the beachfront property in Xpuha is mostly privately owned, there are mostly locally owned beach clubs, houses, and plenty of open space, especially at the north end of the beach where you can find a lot of solitude. There is only one big hotel and it is not that big. There are many beachfront restaurants and the Aranza restaurant next to Secreto has great fresh grilled seafood. I had a whole fresh fish cooked to perfection on the grill almost
