Absolutely fantastic! The ambiance, service, and hot springs were all top-notch. And to top it all off, we saw the Northern Lights at night – truly incomparable!

I had the pleasure of staying by myself in a Lava Junior Suite at the Retreat Hotel. There’s absolutely a reason this hotel is the most expensive I’ve ever stayed at; it rivaled my favorite, Raffles Singapore. The exclusivity and access to the private Blue Lagoon was exactly what I hoped for. The room itself was beyond luxurious — so much so, I bought a blanket they had on the bed! I had a 30 minute relaxing in-water massage (which is perhaps the only thing I wouldn’t repeat because it felt a little exposed with others simultaneously receiving treatments.) I thoroughly enjoyed the BL+ Resurfacing and Sculpting Facial and the recommended products afterward did not feel overly-salesy. The tasting menu at Moss Restaurant was exceptional. Above all, the staff truly went above and beyond to make me feel welcome and taken care of. I would definitely return again, if I could afford to do so!

Driving from the airport we decided to check out the Blue Lagoon to see if we would like to go. When we entered we were met at the lobby door by two pleasant young men and told we could not walk around because we were not guests. Sorry, but I like to see where I am spending my money.

We had high expectations for this property, which offers private access to the Blue Lagoon. Rarely do our expectations not only get met but exceeded in several respects. The rooms are spacious, simply decorated, and exceptionally peaceful—the perfect setting for rest and relaxation. Despite the simplistic architecture and décor, the atmosphere feels comfortable, welcoming, and sheltered. The service is absolutely impeccable, both at reception and throughout the property: courteous, attentive, and discreet, exactly as one would expect from such a establishment. Access to the Blue Lagoon and the spa is excellent. Guests can enter the public section of the lagoon directly from the hotel, but aside from seeing the larger area, there is little reason to spend much time there. The hotel’s private section is smaller, yet it offers a reserved, far less crowded environment that is ideal for relaxation. At the same time, it is spacious enough that it never feels confined or overcrowded. Honestly, one has to look hard to find any real shortcomings. Dining is perhaps the weakest aspect of the property, with quality that can occasionally be inconsistent. The notable exception is the restaurant Moss, which is truly exceptional and well worth making a reservation for. The experience may be expensive, but it is absolutely worth the price.

This is one of those unique experiences that are very expensive but you justify paying for it since you will only do it once. We are so glad we did and that service and amenities were top notch and we had never experienced such an upscale lagoon with such unique amenities and offerings. The staff, hotel rooms, breakfast, etc. were all amazing!

Came back in February for a business visit to Iceland and had two meals in this chic hotel where I stayed once last year. Food-wise, quality is premium whilst presentation is modernist. Ambience is impressively soothing. The dusk is best as the sun sets and casts a misty glow all around the whole property… Design-wise, this is a paradigm of Nordic simplicity and out-of-this-worldly tranquility, which I like a lot. You see designer lamps here and there, and the custom furniture is no-frills chic. Services are a true delight. From rooms to restaurants, all staffers are spontaneously welcoming and informative. Front desk is efficient and responsive. In particular, I shall thank Jóhann Helgi Hilaríus Gíslason, a senior host, who answered all my questions about this and that. Icelanders are natural hosts and Jóhann is such a great pleasure! Will come back in a heartbeat.

Simply a great experience. Checked in was efficient and relaxing. Offered a glass of champagne followed by a tour of the facility and then escorted to our room. We had a lava view which was great room. I think the difference between a lava and a moss view is the floor. The changing light on the lava and moss on top provided variation. Checked in about 4:30 PM. Booked a in water treatment at 6:00 (not included) which jumpstarts your time at the Retreat. We followed that by an hour exploring the private lagoon. Then we went to the ritual experience (included) at 7:00 PM. We planned dinner for 8:30 PM so that we could get one last dip in the private lagoon before closing. Just a great evening. Our only disappointment was not being able to get into the Moss restaurant. It was fully booked and this was a last minute reservation for us. In the morning there was a great buffet in the reception lounge area that was included. We checked out the larger public lagoon to realize we only wanted to stay in the private lagoon. Took in one more ritual experience before check out.

We recently stayed at The Retreat at the Blue Lagoon. the setting was stunning, the hospitality was top notch, and the spa was divine. We did not have any desire to set foot outside the Retreat property for the days we were there. However, we did have several issues with our room during our stay that was disappointing given the hotel’s luxury positioning. The room we were assigned appeared to be a wheelchair‑accessible layout, which was missing key features, such as a bath tub, advertised on the hotel’s website and present in our friends’ room, despite us booking months in advance and paying the same rate. This room discrepancy was not communicated before or during check‑in, and we had to raise the concern twice before it was acknowledged. Privacy in the room was an issue due to the layout. The shower had a noticeable gap of a few inches between the sliding door and the wall, facing the entry area, and the doors to the shower and bathroom were sliding doors as opposed to regular doors with a latch. Additionally, the room only had one towel hook for two people and no designated place to hang swimsuits. While regular rooms had an additional towel rack to hang swimsuit/towels, our room had none. We also experienced multiple billing errors. Our Moss restaurant charge was missing at checkout, and the itemized invoice sent to us afterward contained several mistakes, including a double charge of 188,650 ISK. To the hotel’s credit, management did respond to the concerns we raised after our stay and offered an adjustment to our bill. We genuinely appreciated this and the gesture reflects their strong commitment to improving the guest experience. Overall, we would recommend The Retreat to other travelers for its unique environment and beautiful, relaxing setting. However, be aware that certain twin room configurations may lack features that are advertised and may have privacy issues, and it's wise to review your bill carefully even after checkout to ensure accuracy.
