This isn’t just a place to stay, it’s an exceptional experience. Hosted superbly by Jason and the team, we enjoyed the 2N,3D package which was packed with highlights and adventures. A big shout out to Ryan and his xray vision which spotted the very best wildlife the area has to offer plus the pure treat watching an elephant swim across the river infront of our boat and wild orangutans swinging in the forest (and yes, one eyeballed me!). We loved the food, the steps, the views, the vibes and the attention to detail - all of which delivered a very special experience for us all. Thank you!

What a wonderful few days in the 'river jungle'. Gert, Jason and the team went above & beyond to make our stay memorable - a unique location offering unique hospitality. Always keen to go above and beyond and so wouldn't hesitate to recommend.....

We have just got back from our holiday in Malaysia and the very best part was our stay at The Last Frontier. We should have been a family of 6, but in the end only 5 of us made it. As all the other reviews have said- this is an incredible place. Yes- the stairs are hard in the heat and humidity but we knew they were there and they did set the place apart from the others. We saw everything, including elephants and a huge male orangutang just metres from us one morning over breakfast. Even on our last morning we saw a mother orangutang with twins as we walked down the stairs. Jason and Gert were great and a huge thanks to Ryan who always seemed to beat the crowds and get the best place to see the animals. I felt very looked after - thanks to the lads for showing me the way to my room each night and patiently holding torches. This was a family get together and one we will all treasure for the rest of our lives. We will be talking about it for years to come. Sorry about the stairs! 😀

Most of the reviews have already covered how good the resort was so I won't go into too much detail. My wife and I stayed for two nights and did the usual river trips and got to see most of the wildlife apart from the elephants. We did see an orangutan in the distance but it was still wonderful to see it in the wild. All the staff were wonderful but with a special mention to Jason who was so informative and helpful. Gerd and Jason have a wonderful location for their tours and we couldn't fault the stay. Many thanks to Ryan for the river tours.

For us this was perfect, definitely a 10 out of 10. The location was stunning and great to be up high with a view. The 569 steps (we counted them) just meant that you could enjoy the amazing food with less guilt. They even have wine up there. Being small and only 4 rooms, means that activities are less crowded which we enjoyed. Saw some amazing wildlife and we loved the bats outside the room Brian was a good guide and Jason and the team really looked after us. Would throughly recommend if you prefer the more personal touch.

It’s difficult to write a review for The Last Frontier Lodge that will do it justice. From the time you are picked up to the time you depart you can expect to be treated with genuine kindness and caring. The meals are beautifully presented, fresh and flavourful. The rooms clean, roomy and comfortable. The hikes and river cruises interesting and timely giving you an agenda that keeps you occupied but also gives you time to explore on your own or relax. My husband and I are avid travellers and rate The Last Frontier 10 out of 10 however it is for people who enjoy the outdoors with a bit of adventure in an intimate setting. If you want 5 star and luxury this may not be suitable for you.

What an amazing place - wonderful staff, stunning setting surrounded by sounds and sights of the rainforest, intimate setting just 4 rooms and a max of 8 guests, fantastic food. Great AM and PM river trips with Ryan where we spotted Orangutans, Proboscis Monkeys, Crocodiles, Hornbills and much more.

What an amazing place! Yes, you need a level of fitness that will get you up and down 600 stairs multiple times but it's worth it. Only 4 rooms, so it's private. Rooms are functional, thoughful and clean. Food was fantastic (the reviews about the amazing banana pancakes are correct). Opt to do the additional morning boat ride if you can, it's totally worth it and beautiful on the river in the mornings. Since there are a maximum of 8 guests, the boat is a lot roomier than the other boats you see from larger lodges. Each trip is 2 hours (walk from the lodge to the boat about 12 mins each way). If you can't live without the internet, get a local eSIM before you come. You get signal in the dining area. Ryan was a great guide. We saw an orangutan as we arrived at the lodge, lots of proboscis monkeys, crocodiles, macaques (pigtail and long tail) along the river. Heaps of birdlife. I can't say enough about Jason. He started the lodge from nothing over 20 years ago. His passion for the area is inspiring. We had some great conversations during the transfer and at the lodge. I required urgent medical attention at the end of our stay and Jason was outsanding in his care for me. He is one of a kind and enough of a reason to stay here.

My wife and I had an absolutely wonderful stay at the Last Frontier. Every aspect of the stay far exceeded any expectations we had. Right from the initial contact with Gert and Jason (N.B. You're better off booking direct with them via their website), we could tell they are fantastic hosts, and chatting to them in the car to the rest was a brilliant introduction to life in and around the Kinabatangan River, and in Sabah generally, and by the end you feel very relaxed with them, like old friends. The quality of the rooms is beyond belief in such a remote and isolated place. Everything was spotlessly clean and of very high quality. Bed was comfy. Shower was warm (not that I wanted it warm) and had very good pressure. The food was great. The team are happy to adapt to dietary requirements and every meal we had was delicious and satisfying after a day out on the water or hiking through the jungle. Rodel, the guide we had was great. Friendly and great at spotting interesting wildlife with a great knowledge of the wildlife along the Kinabatangan River. Thanks to his expert eyes we spotted so much, including several species of hornbills, Crocodiles, Proboscis monkeys and a 10 strong heard of Pygmy elephants that included 2 babies. Obviously one can't go out expecting to spot anything, they're wild animals after all and rarely stick to a timetable, but with Rodel you stand the best possible chance. He didn't quit when we were back at the resort either, as he came running to get us when he spotted a juvenile orang utan climbing up the hill, high in the trees. In the end we were lucky enough to have two sightings; the second being as we ate breakfast the next day (though same caviat as above applies). But I would highly recommend the last frontier resort to anyone visiting sabah with an interest in wildlife. They really are amazing and clearly genuinely care about it, or they wouldn't do what they do. It's a great place and I hope to return again one day.
