Hotel & Spa Poco a Poco - Costa Rica

Santa Elena Monteverde|0.13km from San Luis Waterfall
We stayed here back in April as part of a longer trip. The hotel grounds are beautiful and I loved my room - it was big and airy and the ceiling fan worked fine for the weather at the time. Not sure if it would have been sufficient in hotter weather. The food and cocktails in the restaurant were delicious and the staff were awesome. We ended up being the only ones left at the end of dinner so we turned down desert thinking they would want us to leave. Our lovely waiter assured us they were open for a while yet and then even gave us coffee on the house. It’s a short walk into town (be prepared to walk uphill on the way back) and there is a little shopping centre right across the road. There is a big supermarket, some bakeries, restaurants and cute souvenir shops. My issue with this hotel was check in. We had booked a twin room (through the travel agency.) When we were taken to the room it was a double. The lovely man who had helped with our luggage radioed back up and said his colleague was coming down. He then told us that this is what we had booked and we either had to share the bed or they would put up a child’s extra bed for one of us. My confirmation email from the TA said twin room so I questioned it again. He insisted this was what the TA had booked. I then walked back up to Reception and asked to use the phone to call the TA. As I was speaking he was talking to another colleague and had our booking in his hand. We could both see it clearly said twin. He then spoke on the phone to TA. They sorted the problem by giving us two rooms and offered us free cocktails while we waited. This part was all fine and lovely. My problem was the lies and trying to blame the TA and make us feel like we had no options. Had they admitted the mistake and then fixed it I would have no issues. But the way it was dealt with left me with an unpleasant feeling about an otherwise lovely stay.

The rooms were spacious and clean. Quiet location. Balcony outside our room which was lovely to sit out on and watch for wildlife. Well maintained grounds and gardens. Located in the cloud forest, Much cooler than the other parts of Costa Rica we had been too so bring a jacket and a pair of trousers. The hotel has it's own restaurant, we had breakfast but not dinner there. Breakfast was good with plenty of choice. The bar area in the restaurant was nice too, having happy hour on cocktails. We ate dinner at De Lucia, less than a minute walk with great food. Walkable to some other restaurants and shops, we just got caught in a downpour trying to walk to the town! Staff polite and friendly, would recommend if you are planning on staying in monteverde.

What seemed like was going to be a great place to stay in Monteverde ended up being the worst part of my trip to Costa Rica. I did a lot of research before booking and even emailed the staff prior and there was someone by the name of Ran who was incredibly helpful and made me feel like booking with Pension would definitely be worth it so I booked. About a couple of weeks before my trip, I reached out again to confirm transportation arrangements with Ran who was looking into it for me and I never received a response. I reached out again a week later and received a general response from the hostel stating that Interbus was recommended. This was clearly not the individual I was in communication with and it was a red flag I unfortunately ignored. I ended up doing my own research for transportation and we finally arrive to the hostel. Upon arrival, I was greeted with the new owner who we come to find has only been in Monteverde for 3 months and seemed overwhelmed. She was complaining about how she had to take on so many roles now that she is the owner and honestly it was way more information than needed. She was unable to provide any helpful information like what's the best way to get back to the airport, good place to eat, etc. It also then made sense why Ran (previous owner) never emailed me back. It all just left a really sour taste in my mouth. Whatever. Moving on to the room, basic hostel room with no closet space, just a few shelves and noisy neighbors. I did not attempt the shower and the overall vibe of the place felt depressing with the awful lighting (felt like a prison cell). The complimentary breakfast saved us money but that was also a weird experience having to go next door to ask for it and the staff wasn't the most friendly. Then on the night before our departure, we went to reception to ask for a later checkout (as instructed on the hotel brochure in the room) and spoke with the owner who checked us in. Our bus out of Monteverde was at 2:00pm and she said we could stay in the room until 12:00pm at the latest. We thought finally this is the one positive experience and we figured we could walk around or go get a coffee somewhere for 2 hours, no problem. What a joke. At 10:40am the next morning as we were getting dressed, someone is knocking hard on our room door. After getting some clothes on, I answered and its one of the other receptionists stating that checkout was at 10:00am. I advised that the owner gave us the okay last night to stay in the room until 12:00pm. She immediately said, ”No, we have someone checking into this room and you have to check out.” There was no apology for the miscommunication, no form of recovery or compromise- just a flat out no. I work in hospitality and I understand this is a hostel but wow. I wish we would have just gave our money to literally any other local hostel. The experience we had prior to arriving to Pension to the moment we got there and finally checked out, was black and white. What an upset a

What an Amazing place! We will recommend it to everybody! We enjoyed our stay so much. The owner is such a great guy! Jose and Sharon the staff are incredible, very nice, friendly and helpfull. They booked the ziplines tour and ride for us and did our laundery super fast. The vibe of the place is cozy and it is beautifuly designed. It is a good place to get to know other travelers. The room was super clean. There are hot water in the shower. The location is perfect! Close to everything. The resturant next door called Open Kitchen is delicious, and the free Yoga class in the lobby is really cool.

The place is small and the room is very narrow, but the proprietress service is very good. Although her English is not good, communication through translation software does not affect. The hot water is not very hot, the small equipment that is heated by electricity at the faucet exit, the big one is cold water, and the small one is warm. The main thing to see when booking is low price and breakfast.
