Taishan: Between the Mountains and Seas of a Hometown for Overseas Chinese, a Poetic Journey During a break from my busy life, I packed my bags and headed to Taishan, embarking on a long-awaited journey. This small city, hidden in Guangdong, is like a dusty pearl, exuding a unique charm through the ages. As a famous hometown for overseas Chinese, Taishan's blend of overseas Chinese culture and natural scenery paints a unique and charming picture. In just a few days, I was captivated, creating unforgettable travel memories. Upon arriving in Taishan, I couldn't wait to visit the Mei Family Compound. Built in 1931, this complex consists of 108 arcade-style buildings, arranged in a magnificent manner. Stepping inside, it felt like traveling back in time. The blend of Chinese and Western architectural styles is striking, with European carvings and Chinese glazed tiles complementing each other. Each building tells the story of the overseas Chinese's struggles and successes. Strolling along the stone-paved roads and touching the mottled walls, the prosperous scenes of the past seemed to unfold before my eyes. The Mei Family Compound gained fame as a filming location for movies and TV series like "Let the Bullets Fly" and "The Knockout." Standing in these familiar scenes, I felt like I had stepped into the screen. The countryside of Taishan is also full of charm, and Fuyue Village left a deep impression on me. Fifteen Western-style buildings are scattered among the rice paddies and green trees, creating a tranquil and peaceful rural landscape under the sunlight. These buildings, constructed between 1917 and 1936, blend Western romance with the simplicity of Lingnan. Stepping inside, the exquisite carved railings and stained-glass windows showcase the exquisite craftsmanship of the artisans. Villagers basked in the sun in their courtyards, warmly greeting me, making me feel a strong sense of rural warmth. Here, I enjoyed the tranquility away from the hustle and bustle. As a coastal city, Taishan's seafood is a must-try. The Duhu Seafood Street is bustling with activity, with stalls filled with fresh seafood. I chose my favorite seafood and had it cooked at a nearby restaurant. The steamed grouper was tender and smooth, the boiled shrimp were sweet and bouncy, and the stir-fried clams were fragrant. In addition to seafood, Taishan also offers many local specialties. The eel rice is savory and delicious, and the five-spice goose is firm and has a perfect balance of sweet and sour flavors. Every bite was a burst of happiness. In Taishan, I also encountered breathtaking seascapes. The azure sea stretched as far as the eye could see, with waves lapping against the beach, playing a beautiful melody. The sand on the beach was fine and soft, and fishing boats swayed on the sea, creating a picturesque scene. I strolled along the coastline, with the sea breeze caressing my face, and my worries and fatigue dissipated with the wind. As the sun set, the sea surface shimmered, breathtakingly beautiful. My trip to Taishan was a feast of culture and cuisine, as well as a spiritual cleansing. The scenery and food here are filled with history and emotion, allowing me to witness the pioneering spirit of overseas Chinese, feel the warmth of the countryside, savor authentic cuisine, and encounter stunning seascapes. Taishan is like a hidden treasure, waiting for more people to explore. I left with memories and nostalgia, a seed of anticipation for our next encounter already planted in my heart.
