The mother church of the Anglican Diocese of Manchester, residence of the Bishop of Manchester, and parish church of the city is Manchester Cathedral, formerly known as the Cathedral and Collegiate Church of St Mary, St Denys, and St George in Manchester, England. In the heart of Manchester, it is a grade I listed structure located on Victoria Street.
In the years after the establishment of the college body in 1421, the previous parish church was restored in the Perpendicular Gothic architectural style. James Stanley II (warden 1485–1506 and later bishop of Ely 1506–1515) was in charge of rebuilding the nave and collegiate choir with high clerestory windows at the end of the 15th century. He also ordered the late-medieval wooden interior furnishings, such as the pulpit, choir stalls, and the nave roof supported by angels playing gilded instruments. In 1847, the collegiate church was elevated to the status of the diocese's cathedral. In the Victorian era, it underwent substantial renovations and extensions, and again after bomb damage during World War II.
