Hillside Retreat

We had an amazing stay at the Hillside Retreat. The location is perfect, with a beautiful view over the city. It is away from the busy centre but still within walking distance. The team was incredibly kind. They picked us up from the station and dropped us off again at the end of our stay. They even drove us to another viewpoint where we had a clear view of the city. We would definitely recommend staying here!

Absolutely a perfect stay. I highly recommend this hotel. The host speaks very good English which made our stay very easy. Evaporation is included - we were picked up at the train station and he kindly brought us when we departed. This is much easier than figuring out how get to and find the hotel. He also gave us a ride to the bus to visit Tang An. He was kind and helpful. Breakfast was delicious. The Chinese breakfast looked good and the wrapped rice I tried was good. It was nice change to also have a western breakfast with egg, toast, delicious banana crepe, and good cappuccino. The hotel is lovely too. Gorgeous traditional furniture and hand made wood furniture throughout. The shower and toilet worked perfectly. It was nice to have a laundry washing machine in our room. We were fortunate to have an upgraded room with a stunning view. Totally flawless stay and the best we’ve had in China.

The hotel is great, and the English speaking owner is very attentive! The hotel is located at the edge of the town with greatly helps with the feeling of being in a traditional village (many other hotels are directly on the Main Street which feels artificial and touristy). When booking, don’t forget to message the owner via the platform as they arrange pick up from the train station!! Thank you for a warm and comfortable stay !

Honestly the best place I've stayed at during my 4 weeks in China. The rooms are spacious, comfortable, and have all the amenities one could wish for. The location is great too - close to the main street, yet a little out of the way, so you can enjoy the calm atmosphere and a great view. The breakfast that was served every day was fantastic as well. Most of all though, the owner is super nice, and speaks very good English! He will help you out with any questions you might have. And if you contact him a day in advance, he will arrange free pickup from the train station for you, which I would definitely recommend - otherwise getting to Zhaoxing can be a bit tricky, especially if it's your first time visiting.

Everything is just wonderful! The staff is simply delightful. The room is very cozy and comfortable. Breakfast was delicious! I would love to come back here again. By the way, they can pick you up at the train station and take you back—just let the staff know in advance.

The house has a tasteful style, it is well equipped with washing machine at the bathroom, the location perfect, the host is very helpful, speaks perfectly English. He picked us up at the train station for free. Thank you so much! Highly recommended!

Great view over the village from our room. The apartament well designed and well equipped. Owner helped us arrange the free pick-up and drop-off at the train station, what was extremely helpful as the village is quite remote.

I loved this place so much that I stayed 5 nights. Yang the owner speaks perfect English. I rang the day before and he was waiting at the train station with my name on a sign. He helped me organise the entrance fee. Mine was free as I'm 73 years old, even though I am a foreigner. I am travelling on my own from New Zealand. The train station pick up was free and very useful. If you take the bus it's a long way from the ticket office and bus stop into the village. Yang then transferred me into his smaller vehicle to go up the little lane to the hotel. The hotel is 5 minutes walk into the village and has a great view of the village.. It is quiet as it's a little bit away from the busy centre. The room was perfect. Everything new and very clean. And no smells. The bed was extremely comfortable with good quality bedding. I used the washing machine in the room to wash my clothes. There was tea and coffee provided. Yang took me on a full day trip to see some other local villages that have no tourists. We walked around the villages together. It was fantastic to have an English guide to explain everything. We saw people making rice wine, making indigo dye, building a house using traditional techniques. We saw a fighting buffalo. Yang chatted to the people and explained what they were doing. This was the best time I have had in China. He was a good careful driver. The breakfast was huge! So many dishes, including fruit. Yang was always available to help me with any questions and we had good talks every morning when he helped me plan my activities.
