Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding Highlights: Must-See Features and Attractions
Some information may have been translated by Google Translate
The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is home to many adorable giant pandas, and you can observe these charming national treasures up close. Located in the northern suburbs of Chengdu, the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is approx. 10 km from the city center, and its construction fully simulates the wild living environment of giant pandas, with lakes, streams, bamboo forests, lawns, and more.
The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding has many "panda villas", which are enclosed leisure areas for pandas. Each features an outdoor yard and an indoor rest room. When the weather is cool, the giant pandas play in the yard, and visitors can watch the adorable pandas through the railings; when the weather is hot, the giant pandas hide in the air-conditioned rest rooms, and visitors can only watch them through the glass.
You can also see pandas in the new area of the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, and they are our hero pandas. The pandas' home is bigger, and their activity range is wider.
Seeing pandas is the main draw, but there is plenty more to do and see. A must-visit is our landmark building — the internet-famous Panda Tower. As a new landmark of Chengdu, it stands at the highest point of the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. The tower is 69.8 m tall with 11 floors. Its exterior resembles a giant bamboo shoot, while the interior is shaped like a blooming hibiscus flower. Inside, 81 platforms are distributed throughout, allowing visitors to enjoy the views of the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding from multiple angles.
There is also the Art Museum (New Building) located in the dense forest area of the new district, which uses emerging exhibition methods such as multi-sensory interaction, lighting installations, interactive installations, and thermal sensing to create immersive exhibition scenes for visitors.
The new area of the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding plans to set up science popularization display boards and interactive facilities with rich content and diverse forms in four major zones, so that visitors can learn about giant pandas while watching them and enhance their interactive experience. On festivals related to animal and environmental protection, themed science popularization activities will also be carried out for visitors of different age groups, such as interactive lectures, family-friendly science popularization, mystery exploration games, and other activities that combine education with entertainment.
When you're tired from playing, you can also go enjoy a musical — "Panda": it vividly presents to the audience the scene of magical animals, with the giant panda as their representative, coexisting harmoniously, sharing nature, and loving life on the beautiful and fertile land of Chengdu, Sichuan. Through the form of a musical, it reflects the livable landscape of Chengdu, Sichuan, and the simple and leisurely life of the local people.
In terms of total area, it has increased from the original 1,035 mu to 3,570 mu, expanding by 2.5 times. During the expansion, the original topography and landforms were fully followed and preserved, and the multi-level landscape belts of mountain valleys formed by mountain gullies and streams were utilized to create 11 giant panda venues, multiple science popularization venues, and visitor pedestrian streets and other sightseeing locations. After the expansion project is completed, it can accommodate no fewer than 180 giant pandas and companion animals such as red pandas and golden snub-nosed monkeys. As of now, multiple giant pandas and red pandas have moved into the "new homes" in the expansion area, and rare animals such as golden snub-nosed monkeys will also be waiting to welcome everyone in the future.
In terms of design, the new area is equipped with ample visitor facilities in accordance with 5A attraction standards. It not only provides basic facilities such as sightseeing vehicles and tourist restrooms, but also equips the hill commercial street, the exit commercial street, and scattered commercial complexes in various zones with a large number of tourism service facilities. The planned business formats include dining, souvenir sales, postal services, cinemas, theaters, and experiential education, among others, and the quantity is sufficient to meet visitor demand. After nearly a year of operation, in response to the practical issues of the new area's large size and uneven distribution of supporting facilities, the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding has added multiple beverage vending machines, direct drinking water dispensers, and shared convenience facilities throughout the new area to improve the visitor experience. Next, the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding will further supplement and improve visitor rest facilities, inquiry service facilities, and guide and navigation facilities to meet visitor needs.
The expanded Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding will help Chengdu build a demonstration site of harmonious coexistence between humanity and nature, improve conditions for giant panda research and conservation, protect biodiversity, fully demonstrate the brand value, cultural value, and economic value of giant pandas, and build the cultural tourism brand of "Sanxingdui, Jiuzhaigou, and Giant Pandas: A Leisurely Journey Through Sichuan." New businesses and projects such as the Panda Art Museum, IMAX Theater, and Panda Theater are now open, meeting visitors' needs for dining, entertainment, sightseeing, shopping, and leisure while they watch giant pandas.

Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding 🐼Where You Can See Pandas Up CloseVisiting the panda base in Chengdu is one of the most memorable wildlife experiences in China. This is not a traditional zoo, but a research and conservation center dedicated to protecting and breeding giant pandas. Seeing pandas in person feels different than expected. They are larger than many imagine, slow in movement, and completely focused on eating bamboo. Watching them climb, nap, or casually roll on the grass makes the visit surprisingly calming. 📍Location: · Chengdu, Sichuan Province · About 10–15 km from the city center · 30–40 minutes by taxi 🎟 Tickets: · Entrance fee: ~55 CNY · Electric shuttle inside the park (optional): ~10–20 CNY Prices may vary slightly by season. 💎 Best Time to Visit: · Early morning (8:00–10:00 AM) — highly recommended Pandas are most active during feeding time. · After late morning, many pandas sleep and activity decreases. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable weather. 🧩 Crowds: This is one of Chengdu’s top attractions. Expect significant visitor numbers, especially on weekends and holidays. Arriving at opening time makes a noticeable difference. ⏰How Much Time to Plan · 2–3 hours is usually enough · The park is large, with multiple panda enclosures and red panda areas 🏠 Where to Stay: Most travelers stay in central Chengdu and visit the panda base as a half-day trip. Staying near Chunxi Road or Tianfu Square offers convenient access to transport and restaurants. The Chengdu Panda Base is structured, organized, and popular — but it delivers exactly what visitors come for: a rare opportunity to observe giant pandas in a well-maintained, conservation-focused environment.Oksi_52

Chengdu is beautiful, but I really don't recommend it—visiting in October is a struggle. Many people will try to talk you out of visiting Chengdu in October, saying the weather is unpredictable, it lacks the vibrancy of spring and summer, and the experience is just average ☁️! Having just finished a three-day, two-night immersive trip to Chengdu, I want to share the honest truth! October is actually the most healing and livable golden season for travel in Chengdu all year! Say goodbye to the muggy heat of midsummer and the massive crowds of the National Day holiday. The whole city is filled with the scent of osmanthus, the temperature is a cool and comfortable 13–24℃, tourist numbers at attractions drop sharply, and prices for food and lodging return to normal. No need to wait in lines or rush around—you can leisurely stroll through old streets, eat delicious food, and enjoy the autumn scenery. It’s pure relaxation! The so-called "struggle" of autumn is just a misunderstanding of the unique, cozy, and vibrant charm of late autumn in Chengdu ✨ 1️⃣ 3-day attraction itinerary & real travel experience 📸 Day 1: Taikoo Li + Daci Temple + Kuanzhai Alley – A first taste of the old city's vibrant life 🏮 Taikoo Li and Kuanzhai Alley are open all day for free, and Daci Temple requires a free reservation for entry between 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM. The streets of Chengdu in October hide stunning autumn scenery; osmanthus flowers bloom one after another along the streets, and the breeze is filled with their sweet fragrance. Blue tiles and gray walls paired with light yellow autumn leaves, where ancient architecture blends with modern shopping districts—the atmosphere is incredibly gentle. Hidden in the center of the bustling city, Daci Temple is a quiet and serene thousand-year-old temple. With its red walls and lush greenery, and soft autumn light, it’s a hidden, healing gem in the city where you can avoid the crowds, meditate, pray, and take stunning traditional-style photos. With the holiday crowds gone, Kuanzhai Alley’s old stone-paved streets are clean and simple. Stripped of commercial restlessness, it’s perfect for a slow stroll to experience the authentic local life of Chengdu. Chengdu’s limited-edition autumn comfort food is addictive 🍲: The cool weather is perfect for authentic community hot pot. The beef tallow base is rich and fragrant, and the tripe, tender chicken feet, and braised pork intestines are incredibly flavorful—warming and satisfying. You must try the soft and sweet sugar oil fruit, chewy handmade ice jelly, and springy sweet water noodles—all classic street snacks. The creamy, rich pig's trotter soup is nourishing and warming, perfect for the autumn temperature difference. Local old street shops offer authentic food at fair prices without the "influencer" markup, so you can eat without worry. Photo spots: Daci Temple red wall autumn scenery, Taikoo Li artistic streets, Kuanzhai Alley retro doorways, close-ups of osmanthus alleys. Outfit tips: Choose light coffee, beige, or gentle color palettes 👗. Simple and versatile, they fit the autumn vibe of Chengdu. Bring a light trench coat for the temperature difference between morning and evening to capture atmospheric photos. Day 2: Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding + Dongjiao Memory – A healing, playful, and artistic tour 🐼 The Panda Base is open from 7:30 AM to 6:00 PM, and tickets are ¥55. The cool October weather makes it the best time of year to see pandas! The national treasures have said goodbye to the lethargy of midsummer and are full of energy, frequently climbing trees and eating. By visiting off-peak, you don't need to wake up early to queue, allowing for an immersive, up-close experience with the pandas—it’s incredibly healing. The park is lush with greenery, the autumn woods are picturesque, and the air is fresh. It’s comfortable to walk around and suitable for all ages. Dongjiao Memory is open all day for free. It’s a cultural and creative park transformed from old industrial factories, where the soft autumn light acts as a natural film filter. Retro train tracks, red graffiti walls, and old machine installations are unique photo spots. With fewer tourists, you can avoid the assembly-line photo ops. The mix of industrial style and autumn scenery is sophisticated and unique. For lunch, I recommend the local favorites: maocai and qiaojiao beef 🥘. Fresh, fragrant, and generous portions—you can eat your fill for about ¥50 per person. It’s authentic and a great value. Photo spots: Panda villa feeding area, park autumn forest trails, Dongjiao Memory retro train tracks, industrial graffiti walls. Outfit tips: Casual, energetic, or simple workwear styles fit both the playful, healing, and retro-artistic scenes. Day 3: Wangping Street + Fuqin Night Market – A niche, artistic, and vibrant finale 🌙 Wangping Street is open all day for free and is a hidden autumn gem for locals. It’s not overly commercialized, and the riverside walkway is clean and healing. Cafes and artistic shops are scattered along the street, and in October, the scent of osmanthus fills the air. Take a slow walk, take photos, or just zone out to unlock the authentic slow life of Chengdu. In the evening, the Fuqin Night Market is full of vibrant life. It’s the late-night canteen for locals, gathering all kinds of authentic snacks like grilled brains, cold noodles, and guokui. It’s highly cost-effective and a perfect way to immerse yourself in the local life of Chengdu and end your trip on a high note. For the finale, you must eat handmade osmanthus ice jelly and soft egg pancakes 🍧. Sweet and refreshing, it’s a gentle end to your three-day Chengdu trip. Photo spots: Wangping Street riverside autumn scenery, artistic street corners, Fuqin Night Market vibrant streets. Outfit tips: Relaxed, casual style—spontaneous and natural, perfect for the pace of strolling, eating, and taking photos. 2️⃣ Convenient transportation guide 🚇 Long-distance travel: High-speed trains and flights from across the country go directly to Chengdu East Railway Station and Tianfu/Shuangliu Airport. In October, off-peak tickets are plentiful, prices are affordable, and travel is convenient. Local transportation: Prioritize the subway, which covers 95% of major attractions. It’s traffic-free and affordable. For short trips within the city, you can ride shared bikes or use ride-hailing apps—flexible and worry-free. Optimal route: Bustling city ancient architecture and vibrant life → Playful and retro photo spots → Niche artistic night market. Follow this route to avoid backtracking. Enjoy the scenery during the day and immerse yourself in food and shopping at night for a relaxed, unhurried itinerary. 3️⃣ Authentic local accommodation recommendation 🏨 📍 Address: Business district around Wangping Street, Chenghua District, Chengdu 💰 Off-peak price in October: ¥220–320/night per person ✨ Accommodation highlights: Located in the heart of the city, within walking distance of the riverside district and night markets, with the subway station right nearby—making it a one-stop convenient location for travel and dining. The homestay features a simple, fresh style. The rooms are dry, well-ventilated, and have excellent natural light, which is perfect for the humid autumn weather. It’s quiet with good soundproofing and complete facilities. The surrounding area has well-developed amenities, and booking off-peak offers great value. 4️⃣ Super practical travel tips ⚠️ Travel preparation: The temperature difference between day and night in Chengdu in October is large, and the weather is changeable 🍂. During the day, you can wear long-sleeved sweatshirts or shirts, but a light jacket is a must for morning and evening. Always carry a folding umbrella for short periods of rain. You’ll be walking a lot, so prioritize comfortable, non-slip sneakers. Avoid pitfalls: ❌ Influencer hot pot restaurants in tourist areas are overpriced and taste average; prioritize old community shops downstairs in residential areas. ❌ Don't buy high-priced cultural and creative products or local specialties on the street; they are very poor value. ❌ Don't trust low-priced one-day tours or "fast-track" packages; these are mostly hidden consumption traps. Travel tips: The light is soft in the morning, making it perfect for photos at the Panda Base and old streets. The atmosphere at Wangping Street and the night markets is incredible in the evening. Traveling on weekdays means fewer tourists and a better immersive experience. Personal travel experience & summary 💚 Chengdu in October has no sweltering heat or crushing crowds. The scent of osmanthus fills the city, offering a gentle, healing experience. It has both the quiet heritage of old streets and temples, and a trendy, artistic urban atmosphere. The food is authentic and affordable, and the pace is relaxed and comfortable. No need to rush like a "special forces" traveler—it’s perfect for relaxing, vacations, trips with best friends, or short family trips. I really don't recommend you come to Chengdu in October ✨, because I'm afraid this hidden, gentle, and vibrant autumn city will be discovered by too many people and lose its peace! For those who love slow travel, delicious food, and gentle autumn scenery, hurry up and save this tested guide and head to the osmanthus-scented city during the off-peak season!_TI***8621

Chengdu Happy 7-Day Tour🐼【Chengdu + Jiuzhaigou + Leshan Giant Buddha + Baoguo Temple | 7 Days 6 Nights|Spicy Flavors, Fairyland, and Soulful Journey】 This 7-day, 6-night trip to Sichuan took me from the bustling city to the serene embrace of nature and inner peace. 🔥 🌸Day 1 After arriving in Chengdu, I checked into a hotel near Chunxi Road. My first stop was Kuanzhai Alley, where I enjoyed a panda latte in the quaint, traditional alleys, soaking in the slow pace of Chengdu. 🌶️Day 2 At noon, I braved the famous Sichuan hotpot, sweating and exclaiming with delight at the spiciness. I even tried rabbit meat, a rare local delicacy. In the evening, I strolled around Taikoo Li, admiring the enchanting Chengdu nightscape. 🐼Day 3 Early in the morning, I visited the Giant Panda Breeding Research Base, watching pandas munch on bamboo and roll around—it was utterly heart-melting. In the afternoon, I explored Jinli Ancient Street, where sugar paintings, teahouses, and music created a vivid sense of Chengdu life. 🏞️Day 4–5 Off to Jiuzhaigou! The mountain scenery along the way was magnificent. Upon arrival, the multicolored lakes were like a fairyland, so clear they felt like a dream. I stayed overnight at a local guesthouse under a star-filled sky. 🪷Day 6 On the return journey, I visited the Leshan Giant Buddha and Baoguo Temple. The Buddha, carved into the mountainside, was awe-inspiring, while the tranquil Baoguo Temple, with its curling incense smoke, brought a sense of peace and spiritual cleansing. ☕️Day 7 Back in Chengdu, I enjoyed a relaxing cup of coffee and shopped for souvenirs, wrapping up the trip perfectly. The spiciness of Chengdu, the tranquility of Jiuzhaigou, the grandeur of Leshan, and the serenity of Baoguo Temple—every moment of this journey is worth cherishing. 💚CHE WEN45

[Must-Visit in Chengdu] A Cuteness Overload! The Ultimate 1-Day Itinerary for the Giant Panda Base: Are Red Pandas Stealing the Spotlight? Dispelling the Raccoon Myth & A No-Backtracking Hiking Guide from the South to West Gate!Chengdu, famously known as the "Land of Abundance," offers more than just mouth-watering spicy Sichuan cuisine—its most globally beloved draw is undeniably the adorable national treasure, the giant panda! On this trip to the "Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding" in the Chenghua District, I spent the entire day completely healed by these black-and-white and red-brown furry little elves. The base spans a massive area, shaded by lush trees and emerald bamboo, making it feel like a giant natural forest park. Whether you're an outdoor enthusiast looking to get your 10,000 steps in or a laid-back tourist who just wants some easy photo ops, you'll find your perfect experience here. Now, follow my lens and footsteps as we unlock this off-the-charts "Panda Paradise"! 🐼 Visual Feast 1: The Happy Daily Lives of the Black & White Fluffballs Entering the park, the first thing you'll naturally see are the world-famous black-and-white giant pandas, living their colorful daily lives. The pandas here are incredibly well taken care of, roaming in spacious ecological enclosures. Sometimes, if you look up, you'll be surprised to spot two chubby panda cubs hanging high up in the branches like black-and-white oversized fruits. They swing and dangle playfully, making you sweat for them while simultaneously snapping away on your camera. Other times, they strut and jog across the grass like plump glutinous rice balls. Of course, the most classic scene is the live "mukbang." Watching a giant panda plop casually on the ground, its belly piled high with fresh bamboo shoots, is pure joy. They skillfully peel the shoots with their chubby front paws, stuff them into their mouths, and chew heartily—even flashing a full row of teeth with eyes squeezed shut in a blissful smile. Watching them enjoy their food with zero worries from behind the fence is so therapeutic; you could stand there for half a day, and all your life's stress just instantly melts away! 🦊 Visual Feast 2: My Personal Favorite! The Red-Brown Elves, the "Red Pandas" While giant pandas are the national treasures, I personally feel that Red Pandas are actually even softer, squishier, and cuter! I managed to capture some ultra-close-up shots in the "Red Panda Ecological Area." This little elf came strolling slowly toward us on a small stone path covered in fallen leaves and green grass. It has a round head, big pointy ears, a vibrant red-brown coat, and deep black limbs. But the absolute fluffiest, most lovable feature is its thick tail with alternating red-brown and yellow-white rings! Watching it wag its tail and dart nimbly through the branches and bushes—occasionally stopping to stare at visitors with innocent, wide eyes—that quirky, goofy charm will instantly melt your heart! 💡 Pop Science: Red Pandas Are Absolutely NOT Raccoons! I heard quite a few tourists on-site pointing at the red pandas and calling them "dry noodles" (a popular raccoon snack mascot) or "raccoons." As a seasoned foodie and travel expert, I have to drop some crucial trivia here: Red Pandas (Lesser Pandas) are absolutely NOT Raccoons! Though they both rock striped tails, red pandas belong to their own independent "Ailuridae" family, sporting mainly red-brown fur and white facial markings. The raccoon everyone knows belongs to the "Procyonidae" family, generally has grey-black fur, and features an iconic black "bandit mask" around its eyes. They are entirely different species! So next time you visit, please don't call them by the wrong name! 🗺️ Recommended Itineraries: Analyzing Two Golden Routes Following its expansion, the Chengdu Giant Panda Base has become incredibly vast. To save you from walking in circles, I've mapped out two highly practical, highly recommended routes: 🏃♂️ Route A: The 10k-Step Ironman Trail (Enter South Gate ➡️ Exit West Gate) Best for: The park is massive. If you love walking and have great stamina, I highly recommend this panoramic, no-backtracking route! Guide: Enter through the antique South Gate, uniquely shaped like a giant panda's ear. Along the way, you can fully explore the Sub-adult and Cub Panda Villas, then hike uphill to the newly expanded area. You can check in at the Panda Tower along the way and finally exit directly from the West Gate. You won't retrace a single step, perfectly taking in all the sights of both the old and new areas. You'll easily clock in over 10,000 steps—an unbeatable hiking experience! 🚶♀️ Route B: The Relaxing Highlight Loop (Enter South Gate ➡️ Return the same way) Best for: Visitors traveling with seniors, kids, or those with limited stamina who prefer not to walk too far. Guide: We suggest entering through the South Gate and sticking strictly to the smaller loop in the old area nearby. The greenery in the South Gate loop is fantastic, and core spots like the Panda Villas and Moon Delivery Room are highly concentrated. If you get tired, you can always hop on an electric sightseeing cart near the South Gate. You'll still get to see the cutest panda cubs without burning out, guaranteeing a fun and easy time. 🗼 Core Park Landmark: The Must-Climb, Instagrammable "Panda Tower" No matter which route you choose, if you make it to the new area, you absolutely cannot miss this towering, futuristic structure—the Panda Tower! Standing majestically on a distant hill, this tower boasts a highly unique shape; up close, you'll see the design is inspired by a "spring bamboo shoot breaking through the soil." The entire tower is woven from countless bronze, fluid metallic lines, forming a perfect spiral. Below the tower lies a dreamy, romantic sea of deep purple salvia flowers. The clash between the stark lines of the steel architecture and the soft, natural beauty of the flower sea creates an absolutely breathtaking visual! Climb the stairs to the top of the tower, and your vantage point instantly peaks. The observation deck offers a sweeping, incredibly beautiful view of the entire panda base! You'll take in everything from the lush bamboo forests and scattered traditional Chinese grey-roofed villas to the winding park trails and the faint skyline of downtown Chengdu in the distance. Set against a backdrop of blue skies and white clouds, this panoramic 360-degree view is undoubtedly the most luxurious visual feast of your entire panda base trip! 💡 Practical Visitor Information Attraction Name: Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding Address: No. 1375 Panda Avenue, Chenghua District, Chengdu, Sichuan Province Opening Hours: 07:30 - 17:00 (Last entry at 16:00) Crucial Pro-Tips to Avoid Pitfalls: 1. The early bird gets the worm! It's highly recommended to be in the first wave rushing in exactly at 07:30 when the gates open. Giant pandas are very sensitive to heat, so early morning is when they are most energetic, active, eating bamboo, and playing. By noon and afternoon, as temperatures rise, these fluffballs retreat indoors to blast the AC and sleep flat on their backs—you'll only see a bunch of furry butts! 2. The park has dense bamboo forests, which means lots of mosquitoes and bugs. Make sure to pack insect repellent and wear comfortable walking shoes!Thomas遊戲人生13

Chengdu Travel Guide: Pandas, Tea Houses, and Amazing Food! 🐼If you’re looking for a different experience in China beyond Beijing and Shanghai, Chengdu deserves a place on your travel list. 🐼 Visit Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. Try to arrive early, when pandas are generally more active. Check the opening hours and visitor rules before going. 🍵 Experience local tea culture. People’s Park is a wonderful place to slow down, sit in a traditional tea house, and observe everyday life. It’s a very different experience from rushing between famous landmarks. 🏮 Explore Jinli Ancient Street. This lively pedestrian street is known for traditional-style architecture, souvenirs, snacks, and evening lights. It can get busy, so allow extra time if you visit at night. 🌶️ Try Sichuan cuisine. Chengdu is famous for its bold flavors and Sichuan peppercorns. Mapo tofu and dan dan noodles are good dishes to look for. If you don’t enjoy spicy food, ask the restaurant whether a milder version is available. 🚇 Plan your transport ahead. Chengdu has a useful metro network, but check the route to your hotel and attractions before setting off. Translation apps can also make ordering food and navigating easier. My favorite kind of travel day is one that mixes a major attraction with a slower local experience. Chengdu is ideal for that balance. Would you visit Chengdu for the pandas, the food, or the local culture? #travelersvoice #chinatravelcircleRani Mamahit118
