Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, also called Chengdu Panda Base is one of the best tourist destinations in China. Located at the north Chengdu suburb with only 10km to the city center, this base was first set up in 1987 with 6 sick and hungry giant pandas saved from the wild nature.
At cool times, giant pandas will play outside. But in summer time, pandas are likely to stay indoors to avoid the summer heat (over 26˚C or 79°F). If you are visiting in hot summer time (June, July, August) and don’t see any pandas outside, you are suggested to go to the giant panda enclosures and delivery houses to see giant pandas indoors.

If you are in Chengdu, don't miss an opportunity to to to the research base and see the pandas. I took a metro from my hotel at 6:30 am and then took a taxi. I arrived to the base at 7:20 and it was already a queue there, luckily the area is massive and I didn't see any crowds until about 9am. Pandas were very playful and active, they climbed trees and ate bamboo. Truly adorable creatures!

The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is located in the northern suburbs of Chengdu, about 10 kilometers away from downtown Chengdu. The facility is famous for the protection and breeding of endangered wild animals that are unique to China. It simulates the natural habitat of the giant pandas, and has lakes, streams, bamboo forests and lawns. The chance to come into close contact with the giant pandas is a highlight here. Visitors can have a close-up observation of the pandas' living conditions. There is also a "Panda Villa", which is a restricted area for the pandas to rest.
1.The best timing to see the panda bears is before 9:30 in the morning, especially during the summer season because during noon time, the panda bears tend to retreat into their resting areas to cool down and sleep. 2. Please be aware that when you are near the breeding enclosure of the panda bears, you must not emit any loud/sharp sounds or make any unusual movements as this will unnecessarily agitate them. 3. You are not allowed to use flashlights during photo taking as the eyes of baby panda bears are particularly light sensitive.4. Do take note that you are not to feed the panda bears or to take away the bamboo shoots from their enclosure.5. The daily amount of food given to each individual bear is scheduled and planned.
