To reach the top, you'll climb over 300 steps, passing by sacred sites such as the God of Fortune, the Tiger God, the Well of the Grateful Ox, the Goddess of Mercy (Guanyin), and finally, the Dragon Gate. Before stepping through the gate, make a wish and touch the crystal ball. It's placed quite high, so you'll need to stretch and tiptoe to reach it. Standing at Longmen and looking down, the entire lake is spread out beneath your feet like a crumpled piece of blue cloth. Many people take the cable car up, go straight to Longmen, take a photo, and come back down. That's a pity—the best part of Xishan isn't the stone cave at Longmen, but the path you climb step by step. The essentials Xishan Scenic Area is in the western suburbs of Kunming, about 15 km from the city center. Admission is free. Longmen Grottoes cost 40 yuan, the round-trip cable car is 70 yuan, and the eco-friendly shuttle bus is 25 yuan. Opening hours are 8:00 AM–5:30 PM. Take Metro Line 3 to "Xishan Park" station, then transfer to the scenic shuttle or cable car. If driving, navigate to "Xishan Scenic Area." Parking is limited, so it's recommended to go early. Plan to spend a full day here. Core route: Walk from Huating Temple to Longmen, don't take the shuttle Entering the mountain, you'll first pass Huating Temple and Taihua Temple. Both ancient temples are small, but the trees are old and the incense is light; you can hear birds chirping while sitting in the courtyards. The surrounding area is a commercial district with Ba Wang Cha Ji and Pizza Hut right downstairs. You don’t need to go far for meals or shopping. There’s also Mianshan Ecological Park nearby for walks, and Rongchuang Sea World is very close. 🎮 A Happy Hangout for Young People Equipped with professional e-sports gear, after a day of sightseeing, it’s awesome to team up with friends for gaming at night. There’s also a Korean brand HD projector; when tired, you can cozy up on the sofa to watch movies, creating a great atmosphere. The two beds comfortably sleep four people without feeling cramped, and the bedding is clean for a good night’s sleep. 💁 Super Thoughtful Host No matter how late you arrive, the host will pick you up and proactively recommend nearby delicious barbecue. Today I went to Xishan and experienced the vast and boundless view overlooking Dianchi Lake, as well as the delightful surprise of blooming flowers around the corner. Here are some tips for avoiding peak crowds: 1. Arrive Early Arrive at the scenic area visitor center at 8:30 AM sharp and purchase the eco-friendly shuttle bus (uphill) ticket for ¥12.5 per person. Since I planned to take the Dianchi Cableway, I didn’t buy the downhill ticket. The eco-friendly shuttle bus runs round-trip between the Xishan Scenic Area Visitor Center and the Nie Er Tomb Visitor Center (Longmen Grottoes). The ride takes about 15 minutes. 2. Buy Tickets in Advance I purchased the “Longmen” ticket the day before through the “Kunming Xishan Scenic Area” platform. Students aged 7-18 can buy a half-price student ticket for ¥15 per person, and the adult ticket is ¥30 per person. Just scan the QR code to enter. After passing the gate, you’ll see the electric cart for ¥10 per person. The electric cart runs round-trip between the Longmen Gate and the starting point of the Longmen Grottoes climb. This section takes 10-15 minutes on foot; we walked both ways and enjoyed views of Dianchi Lake along the way. 3. Head Straight to Longmen From the starting point of the Longmen Grottoes, you will pass attractions like Datianmen and Lingxuge Pavilion on the way. Don’t stop at other spots first; go straight to the Longmen Grottoes. The path is very narrow and one-way only. On the way back, you can visit those other attractions. When we returned, the crowds had grown. This section is all stone steps, narrow and steep, but it only takes about 15 minutes with stops to reach Longmen. 4. Dianchi Cableway This cableway runs round-trip between Haigeng Park and Xishan Longmen (Nie Er Tomb Visitor Center) for ¥60 per person. We took it downhill from Xishan Longmen to Haigeng Park. There were almost no people, so the two of us had a whole cabin to ourselves, enjoying a 360° panoramic view of Dianchi Lake from the cable car. After getting off, you arrive at Haigeng Park, where you can watch seagulls.
