Tongli Ancient Town(Tongli Town, Tongli Water Town)

The water town of Tongli Ancient Town in Suzhou's Wujiang district is surrounded by lakes, with a network of rivers dividing it into seven islands. Nearly every household in the ancient town borders the water, featuring numerous narrow alleys and well-preserved Ming and Qing dynasty architecture. With relatively few visitors on weekdays, the town maintains a peaceful and harmonious atmosphere. At night, the illuminated eaves create a breathtakingly beautiful scene.

The ancient town area is quite compact, ideal for exploring on foot. Alternatively, you can opt for a paid rickshaw ride to tour the area.

The entrance to Tongli Ancient Town is located on the south side of the attraction. Once inside, you'll find picturesque views of small bridges and flowing water throughout the town. The uniquely shaped Three Bridges with their long history stand in the central area. You can explore exquisite small gardens, former residences of famous figures, and special exhibition halls on foot. Luoxing Islet, a small island on the lake east of the ancient town, requires a 20-minute walk to the pier followed by a boat ride.

When visiting Tongli, sampling the local snacks is a must. Right after entering the main gate, you'll find Mingqing Street and Zhuhang Street - the two alleys packed with traditional delicacies. Tongli's pastries are particularly distinctive, with famous treats like sock-sole crisps, gorgon fruit cakes, and malt collapse cakes. Don't miss the Jiangnan specialties either - sweet osmanthus rice balls and champion's trotters will delight your taste buds. Take your time strolling through these charming streets, savoring each delicious bite along the way.

Beyond snacks, the attraction also boasts many artistic and trendy spots, mostly clustered in the southern part of the ancient town. Nan Yuan Teahouse is a prime example—sipping tea on its second floor while enjoying occasional pingtan performances creates pure bliss. Don't miss this experience.

For a two-day visit, consider staying overnight in the ancient town where numerous homestays offer unique local charm, though their amenities may not match standard hotels. Alternatively, budget hotels and inns are available near West Ring Road by the lake on the town's eastern outskirts.
